This was my first reading of this classic. It'd been on my reading list for years. Mark Twain's quote about classics being "books one always means to read but never gets around to" came to mind as I was reading. I'm so glad I got around to it. Once I started it, I could not put it down. This story is astounding in that it was written in the late 1900s. I've enjoyed time travel stories for years, and now know that Mr. Wells is the father of this subgenre. I recommend this for all ages, particularly young readers.This is the first Amazon Classic I have read. The formatting and editing were excellent, which made it an easy, pleasurable read. This has often not been the case with other classics I have read.

The movie was better – how often do you hear that? Not often. I listened to the audio-book which was very well read – no issues there. The problem is that I remember the movie well and compared it to what I was listening. Are we to believe that this scientist who was intelligent enough to build a time machine and have elevated conversations with his friends, couldn’t plan even one step ahead and construct a torch in the same fashion that a caveman could. After the first time of almost being killed in the dark, we would expect him to learn from his mistakes and adapt to the circumstances. The tragedy being that the young girl dies because of his foolishness. Had the scientist died it would have just been poetic justice. In my opinion, the movie had a more believable time line and the main character made mistakes but was able to learn from them as we would expect from someone with his experience and education.

I read this novella a long time ago with an unedited text. I thought the Morlocks were huge beings that prey upon the beautiful Eloi. Obviously my memory did not serve me well enough as I re-read this story, I have realized how unreliable memory sometimes is. The Eloi is bigger than the Morlock size-wise but it is the the smaller beings that eat the bigger one like cattle.I am really glad to have bought this Norton edition for it is, as usual, excellent in its annotated text,generous selection of contextual information as well as the inclusion of early reviews and recent criticisms. It is critically useful for the editor to include the alternate chapters of the story; it allows the reader to see how different the unused opening chapter is from the published one. The alternate opening chapter, I incline to believe, is far too technical and boring to be appealing to contemporary readers. As the editor points out, the author has revised the main text many times. And surprisingly, what is usually claimed the first edition is NOT exactly the first. That is why this edition by Prof. Arata is particularly praise-worthy as it is the result of having compared both early editions of The Time Machine published on both sides of the Atlantic, together with the earliest edition which has not been much referred to.Contemporary reviewers analyse the novel from various perspective but the better interpretations of the story come from reviewers in the 20th C as the editor has compiled some selections from Bergonzi and Hume, whose essays are very useful. In Cantor's essay, he puts the text in a wider perspective to fit in the imperial discourse and examines the qualities that are term "modern".My own impression is that this work is best read alongside with The Island of Doctor Moreau as both touch upon class, degeneration and cannibalism. As a parable, this story of Mr Wells' is probably his unconscious fear of the proletariat attempt to overrun the bourgeois. In The Island of Doctor Moreau, it is the beasts that try to "get" the island visitor, who has been impersonating the master of the island. This is a tale that can be read in both ways: forward and backward. Humanity in the future has fallen back in its primitive habits: lower level of intelligence and cannibalism.This is a work by a man of genius, as one early reviewer says.

I'm sure we've all seen the movie - or possibly the Wishbone episode ;) - so we probably all have a general idea of what happens in this book, but it still did manage to surprise me a bit. The tone is surprisingly modern for a book written over a hundred years ago and [unfortunately] the social commentary is just as relevant today as I assume it was at that time. Definitely a short read but also a good one and I especially liked his detailed descriptive language, which made it very easy to picture the world as I was reading.

First time I have read this book. I remember watching this movie with my Mom as a child and not liking it very much. The old adage rings true here: 'the book is better then the movie!'. It's great to see how those before us figured the future would play out. Usually a 'future' novel, at least in my experience, is placed in the 'near future' up to maybe a few thousand years ahead. Well's takes that equation and does away with it going millions of years ahead. It's a good study (or at least perspective) of where man might be by then. Good read and I encourage anyone who has seen the movie, to read the book! Haha

Out of more than a dozen books I'd bought, this was one of the most helpful. I've bought more than one copy, and shared them with others. Ms. Shell knows what she's talking about. Unfortunately, I know firsthand. This book was helpful to me and would have been more helpful if I'd been able to read it before I came under attack from CPS. I knew what CPS could be like, but I never expected to be such an easy target. Even if one has a 'founded or substantiated case' against them, it doesn't make the allegations of CPS true, and it doesn't mean they are a bad parent. I'd like to see Ms. Shell write another book. I'd be one of the first to buy it. I stumbled on this page of reviews and I'm disappointed that here, as well, I see the hand of Ms. Shell's detractors. Not because it's a bad book, but because they have to take cheap shots whenever and wherever they can. Where else but here would be an outstanding place to leave their mark and convince unaware people that Ms. Shell should be ignored. She shouldn't. Some of these reviews contain outright lies, and I'm disappointed that they exist on this page. But you can always do what I did after reading Ms. Shell's book. Sometime after I bought the second copy, I did a search on the internet for Suzanne Shell. Anyone reading these reviews might want to try the same thing.

I can easily explain the sharp division between the reviewers of this book - those who claim that the author's advice is absurd and cite her being accused of giving legal advice without a license obviously read this book in theory only. For those of us who have been falsely accused and had to spend years clawing our way out of CPS and Family Court's clutches, despite the fact that there isn't a shred of evidence except for a vague, anonymous phone call to a hotline, this book reads like a script of the exact harrassment, bullying and abuse techniques used in our own case and is a disturbing harbinger of how widespread this audacious abuse of power has become. My family is well out of the demographic that most people, correctly or not, would assume to be fodder for CPS and Family Court misdeeds, but our 6-year-old son made a single off-color remark in front of the school guidance counselor and by the end of the next day he was forced into foster care over the objections of my husband and me, and as CPS disregarded both sets of grandparents' offers to take temporary custody.Trust me, it behooves every parent of a child in public school to take the information and advice in this book, and others like it, VERY seriously...

Anyone who is or has dealt with the child protection services NEEDS to read this book!! It is well worth reading. CPS will violate your parental rights, guaranteed, and this helps you to protect yourself when going against Goliath.

As pointed out already, the message is indeed excellent and it got me interested when I first watched the TED talk.. I bought the book waiting for the author to have elaborated more on this interesting idea, with more examples and comprehensive discussion. However, the book is insanely redundant with the same 2-3 examples repeated over and over and over and over again.. The author was trying so hard to make a many-page book out of the message and it was excruciating to go through this repetition..Save your money and (most importantly) your time and just watch the TED talk on YT..

The author's TED talk is one of the most-viewed ever; and it's really quite good. In fact, it's so good that you don't need to read this book! He takes a very, very simple concept and expands, and expands, and repeats, and seemingly never edits, and then repeats, and expands, and -- well, you get the idea. The whole thing could've been done in 50 pages or less.Example: Yes, there's a difference between WHAT one does in business and WHY one does it. And sometimes they diverge. He calls this the "Split" and has a graphic and whole chapter on it. Really?? Not needed.Example: He mines the stories of Apple, Wal-Mart, Costco, Starbucks, Martin Luther King Jr, and a few others - over & over & over & over & over again. He makes elementary and generalized statements, such as saying that NONE of the 250,000 people who came to hear Dr. King in Washington came for him; no sir, they came for themselves because their "why" connected with his "why." Uh, no; many came for him and his message or to simply support civil rights.Example: He constantly repeats the words WHY and WHAT in CAPS ALL THE TIME so you'd get the message. And then again....and again.....Example: Yes, the Apple Computer story is inspiring. But among all that WHY stuff is also the story of a dreamer with incredibly bad people skills. To simply elevate the Apple story - and retell it umpteen times - is to vastly oversimplify what made them great back then and now, and why they succeeded in spite of the way Jobs treated his employees.It's almost as if the author had about 10 stories in his pocket and decided to use nothing else at all. He created the entire "start with WHY" mantra out of the 10 stories and never went beyond them to augment, embellish, or create more learnings.So save the money, see the TED talk, and take what he says there to heart. WHY is the basis for being motivated. But there's a whole lot more to say, and sadly, he never gets to it.

I read a lot. At least a few hours a day. This book was awful.Let's start with why. Sinek is an awfully repetitive and, frankly, unskilled writer. He lays out his thesis and then repeats it like a rower repeats his stroke. As he drags out the book to whatever number of words he needed to fulfill book contract, he re/illustrates his thesis with different examples. This would have made the book slightly more tolerable, except the examples are so ordinary and well known that they will put you to sleep. Apple, Disney, JFK, Hitler. Yawn. Even that might be fine if he had spent five minutes on Wikipedia to research less-known stories about them, but it doesn't look like he did.This book should have been a column in a weekend newspaper, or, at best, a chapter in another book about leadership. Not worth your time.

I've read and studied a lot of material over the last 2 years looking for answers to my life and business. What I didn't realize, is that I was looking for this book. While no book stands alone, this book puts the big picture together for me. Without a why I can find myself drifting from one opportunity to the next, with nothing more than fleeting excitement for a new idea. This book has inspired many thoughts as I read it, but it has helped me to truly put into perspective the age-old advice to follow your passion. It's not enough to follow your passion, you got to know why you're passionate for it. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling to figure out what they want to do when they grow up. I'm off to read his follow-up book, Find Your Why.

I moved on to the other, less well-known historical novel (4 volumes, this is the first) by Sigrid Undset after finishing Kristin Lavransdatter for the 2nd time and being in withdrawal. When I say the Master of Hestviken series is even better than KL, I should qualify that I am pretty impressionable about a book I have just finished. Many similar themes from KL--paying the price for young love--but following the life of a man from birth to death. The same beautiful details about life in midevil Norway, a little less of the interior monologues about religion and faith. I love both of SU's works that won her the Nobel Prize in literature. I am surprised that they and she are not more well known. I read somewhere that she personally preferred the Master series to KL, so maybe that colors my thoughts about which is better. If you love KL, definitely don't miss the Master of Hestviken. If you have never read S Undset before, you are in for a treat (if you like epic fiction set in earlier times, like Tolstoy, Dostoevsky.) I want to reread KL and the Master at every stage of my life, because there is so much profound wisdom in her stories and reflections about the consequences of our choices. One note about the Master series--whereas the KL trilogy has a newer translation with a less stilted, old fashioned English, the Master series has only one translation that is a little challenging to get used to, with its old English expressions. However, you quickly get used to it and can enjoy the story. Also, I purchased Vol. 1 in hard copy, then was in a hurry to continue and read 2-4 on Kindle. I prefer to hold the real book in my hands, and you can find less expensive used copies, but instant gratification won the day. Enjoy!

Sigrid Undset's first volume of "The Master of Hestviken" is a very interesting book to read. It is not as fast paced as are most modern novels, but neither is it as slow as some eighteenth century novels such as Richardson's "Clarrissa." It is more deliberately paced. Undset, who died in 1949, had a reputation very very thoroughly researching the background of her novels and the way people actually lived during, in this case, late thirteenth century Norway. However, the Kindle edition does not provide any information about what her sources were. The plot of volume I does not add much to the literary canon. Two small children are betrothed to each other at the ages of seven and eight. They sleep together at fifteen and sixteen, which, under Roman Catholic Church law at the time made them legally married at a time when civil divorce does not exist and ecclesiastical annulments were very hard to get unless one was of royal blood. Various obstacles are thrown in the couples way before they can get together at the end. The most interesting parts of the novel are the descriptions of life and the code of family honor in Norway of the period. Nothing new plotwise but still worth the read.

Set in medieval Norway, the story takes you through the thinking and customs of the time in an entertaining and gripping story of family. If you like historical novels, this is probably one of the best, letting you into the times and touching on questions of morality, change, religion and also letting you in on the history of Norway, while keeping you on edge. I have also read the Kristin Lavransdatter series by Undset and have enjoyed them thoroughly. Sigrid Undset is a superb writer, and her novels are not just entertaining, they leave much more.

Absolutely superb. The first in the tetralogy The Master of Hestviking, this book is as accurate in detail as if it were set in the current time instead of eight centuries past.

First of all, when I read Sigrid Undset's "Kristin Lavransdatter" I was instantly smitten. Easily it went to my personal top ten list of favorite books. Also, last year I read Undset's much smaller novel "Gunnar's Daughter" and was very pleased with that as well. I guess my expectations were too high with these first two examples, for I was a bit disappointed with this first book in the tetralogy. Don't get me wrong I liked it well enough, but I thought it just wasn't up to standard with her other work. I'll continue with the next three books, so I hope for one of those to blow me away.

While this is a great piece of work, I felt like it was not exactly my cup of tea. I wanted more action and less brooding and heart breaking. But please know, this is superior writing, make no mistake, just not what I was looking for with my short attention span.

A deep exploration of a human Norwegian soul, but enough with perpetual weeping! A study of mental illness,medieval Norwegian style.

Perhaps this translation is not great, or maybe this book just isnt a good. I did not enjoy it nearly as much as Kristin Lavransdatter. I was very slow and I didnt care for the characters.

Book is in very good condition. Very happy with purchase. Appreciate being able to purchase it used. This book is Stewards of the Land: A Survey of Landscape The photo posted for this book is the wrong photo. This is not a floral design book.

I received "Designs Made Easy," NOT "Stewards of the Land." What a rip-off. Instead of the textbook I was expecting, I got a cheap, badly designed and written book about making mediocre flower arrangements.

I depended on the Amazon rating to determine the condition of this book. It was classified as "like new" and gave in detail what the defects were. When I received the book, it looked perfectly new to me! The only defect was the original owner's signature, for identification. That was easily taken care of with one of my address labels! The bookstore, from which this book was sent, enclosed a friendly letter, stating that all profits from the sale go to funding their local public library. How nice! We both profited, from the sale. I was able to purchase a $75+ reference book for under $40. I have never been disappointed with my purchases from Amazon.com, every book was in better condition than expected.

What an important book this is. It guides us on how to be stewards of the land ourselves. Caring for the land preserving the qualiaty of the land is a very important thing. I use this in my Landscape Design class and not only is it a great help but truly a beautful guide.

This book gives the gardener an excellent overview and specific information on landscape principles and how to use the information. There is also historical as well as current ideas for landscape design.

Got this for a class, lots of good info

I ordered this book twice and called amazon.com once due to being sent the wrong book. As you can see the book is stewards of the land, yet I recieved Designs Made Easy Two times, which I turned in for refunds. I wonder if amazon.com ever got this straightened out?
