House asks hard questions about the future of Saudi Arabia.”—Graham Allison, Director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard University“A new and different view of Saudi Arabia from the ground up that offers a valuable assessment of where the kingdom is and where it might go. Karen Eliott House's analysis of the Saudi Kingdom is colorful, authoritative, and startling in its conclusions. Among the strengths of House's examination of this troubled American Ally is the experience she gained from living in Saudi Arabia for several years over two decades, and in her use of interviews to lend depth and interest to her theses. The variety of those interviews, from Saudi Princes to the poorest of citizens lends support to her belief that, as a western woman, she has greater access to Saudi Society than a western man would. Many Saudi men met her, for while she is a woman, she is not a muslim woman, which made a great difference, And, of course, as a woman, she had access to Saudi women, who are forbidden to have contact with any unrelated male.Eliott presents many issues that may surprise her readers. Poverty is widespread in the Saudi population, and the Royal Family maintains power through handouts, but these handouts discourage ambition and promote a sense of entitlement. At the same time, the Saudi Royals keep the lid on religious fundamentalists by accommodation and bribery. Another ominous problem is the aging of the first generation of Saudi Princes, the youngest of whom is now over 60 years old. Unlike many monarchies, the Saudi royal family has arranged succession among the approximately 37 sons of the Saudi founder, Ibn Saud. As the end of the line approaches for this generation of brothers and half-brothers, succession will soon fall to the third generation. But which branch? An inter-family conflict is almost guaranteed. Eliott continues to delineate threat after threat--oil reserves are exaggerated, attempting to broaden the base of the economy has failed, citizens and clerics simmer with anger and resentment. Eliott explains each issue clearly, marshals numerous facts, excerpts appropriate interviews, and supplies interesting personal anecdotes. While I would wish for better editing to more tightly organize the many subjects and to eliminate repetition, this is a quick read. Eliott told me much that I did not know. The conclusion that Saudi Arabia is teetering on the edge of becoming a failed state is both startling and frightening. One can only dread the consequences of such a failure. This is an important book which will help us to accept and to prepare for this eventuality.

Karen Elliott House has all the qualifications - and then some - to write the authoritative book on present day Saudi Arabia. She has reported on the Near East for more than 30 years. She won a Pulitzer Prize for it. She was Foreign Editor of the Wall Street Journal for years and its Publisher for more than ten. After her retirement in 2006 she spent the next five years visiting Saudi Arabia, observing, talking, and analyzing what she saw, what she heard and what she had learned - all in preparation for this book. She has huge demonstrated journalistic talent, years of experience and she writes with all the intelligence, authority, and clarity of someone with all those qualifications; and, the wise guys who have belittled her to the contrary notwithstanding, what she says deserves our attention; and she says it beautifully in this book, which is recommended to you with highest praise. This is not the place to try to tell you what she saw and what she has concluded. There's too much to tell. You should read it yourself. . There are, however, some things to mention. First is the Al Saud, the Royal family descended from Abdul Assiz ibn Saud who had conquered Arabia in the early twentieth century, sold essential drilling rights for $250,000 to Standard Oil of California in 1932, then oversaw the rise of the Kingdom to supremacy in the oil markets of the world, and with time fathered 44 sons by several wives and now has left more than 700 male heirs - sons, grandsons, great grandsons, great, great grandsons, all of whom basically "own" the whole country - what's on the surface and what's below - and who keep things under some kind of control through throwing money at problems, pitting elements of opposition against each other and subsidizing and supporting a strict Wahhabi form of Islam which keeps women shrouded and veiled, uneducated and at home, and forbids alcohol, music, representation of the human form in pictures (no movies!), and insists on all men praying five times a day - in the mosque if possible - the first call to prayer being at dawn. Then there are the workers - those who do the janitorial work, pick up the garbage (whenever), clean the toilets etc. They are foreigners - from other Muslim countries, from Bangladesh, the Philippines, India. One third of all workers in Arabia are from out of country. Most importantly there is religion, the strict Islamic dogmatism of Wahhabi Islam which virtually forbids women to have any life of their own, which has strict limits on social behavior of every kind and which insists on absolute obedience to its many demands. Obedience, it asserts, opens the way to heaven. Lack of obedience means one is in effect an infidel and worth nothing. Ms. House illustrates the point by telling the story of Lulu a Saudi woman in her early forties who lives with her eight children on the second floor of a modest two story house with her husband - half time. The first floor is occupied by her husband's other family - and older wife and older seven children - with whom he spends the other half of his time. He's a professor of Hadith, the detailed recounting of the many stories of Mohammed and his works. Lulu does her own work, almost never leaves the house (and then swaddled in black head to toe and with her husband - no other man) and strictly oversees the religious instruction of her children. There's only one TV and that's tuned to the religious channel which broadcasts religious information and bans any appearance of women in its programming. The one computer is used only for religious instruction. She's happy with this life, looking forward to heaven. She would have no other. She is a genuinely devout decent woman who wants only to do the will of Allah, what Allah demands and this is where her happiness is found. She's quite content. Her happiness is in Allah and her transit to heaven. That's all she wants; and - come to think of it - it would really be nice from to time to get away from the computer, the internet, social media, alcohol, TV, the telephone, movies, drugs, take-out, fast food, where-to-go-on-vacation, what-to-wear, and Washington doubletalk. But only from time to time, but she does it on a permanent basis and enjoys it. It's her life in Islam (The story of Lulu is better told in the book than here, but I think you get the point: The dogmatic, detailed, complicated, traditional exercise of the Saudi brand of Islam is first and foremost in the minds of a majority of Saudis. They are happy with it because they are going to Heaven and without it the rest of us are doomed - but as infidels that's our problem.) Finally there is the problem of the future. The al Saud must agree on a modern leader from with the group of those hundreds of descendants of the old warrior and must confront the tide of modern civilization with all its non Islamic traits, its openness and its independent non-tribal ways which, despite all their efforts, laps ever higher and more insistently at the walls of their family and their civilization. Friends, this is a thinking persons book, beautifully written, authoritative, current and very very important. Highest marks!JBP12/1/12

This is a most important and timely book for all of us to read. It is amazing how little we knew about the countries so important in the world today.House has long experience of the kingdom, and she paints it in very negative terms. She describes it as a theocratic dictatorship in which the rulers are only interested in maintaining their power while the population twists in the wind.According to her, the young population is unhappy and struggling to modernize, while the rulers traditionally trade goodies for the populace in return for obedience at home. As far as the USA goes, we give security while they supply oil. It's truly terrible that we support such an evil regime without even understanding what we do.

Given her background and the number of years that Ms. House spent in Saudi Arabia, she gives us a peek at the mystery that has become one of our biggest allies in the Middle East, although sometimes a fickle one.For any student of history and world events, On Saudi Arabia gives what is a concise look at the whole of the kingdom and the challenges that it faces. Probably as no other country in the Middle East right now, Saudi Arabia faces the greatest challenges to maintain its status quo in the days ahead.

#3,476 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book is a worthy sequel to The Phoenix Project, a kind of novel that illustrated the principles of DevOps in a similar fashion that Goldratt's The Goal explained a generation ago the principles behind lean manufacturing and the theory of constraints. It used a fictional story to help the reader understand the "why" of DevOps and what a successful end state looks like. In The DevOps Handbook the same set of authors continue where they left off, this time explaining the "how" of DevOps, how the three Ways (flow, feedback, continuous learning) are implemented in practice. This book lets you see through the current hype around DevOps, much of it coming from tool vendors positioning their various "solutions" as silver bullet, putting the technology in its rightful place beside people and process. While in the Flow section there is plenty on continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) that for most people is what first comes to mind when they think of DevOps, since so much has been written about this elsewhere I don't think this is the most useful part of the book. To me the most valuable section, because it's not covered so well elsewhere, is the one on the principles of feedback, how information flows back from production environments to development via telemetry and A/B testing. But perhaps what is most useful and by itself makes this book more than worth its price are the various case studies from the companies with the most mature DevOps practices, what problems they were struggling with at first and how they got to where they are now. The book ends on a great note with the appendix, which elaborates on the lean principles on which the theoretical framework behind DevOps is built, a how to guide on "blameless postmortems", and an extensive list of references, most of them with URLs, so that the reader can drill down on all the subjects covered.

Agility and continuous improvement : how to become a truly technology driven company. This is not a step-by-step handbook on creating a DevOps culture (Continuous integration, continuous deployment and a test driven environment) but an insightful guide as to how modern IT operations are run and operate. The reason why Amazon is so hard to beat is because they update and deploy new code every single second (and further accelerate this pace) - some e-commerce businesses I work with barely manage an update every week, despite their much smaller size. Their managers never heard of DevOps - if they would have read this book they will understand why their survival depends on them adapting DevOps culture and methodology.

You can't be into DevOps and not read this book. Covers culture, practices, value stream mapping, metrics, case studies, GRC, and security just to name those that come to mind now. My Kindle edition bookmarks and notes could make for a separate book on its own because there's that much in the book worth noting.

Great culmination of various works into one read. Highly recommend. This book provides a strong conceptual overview with a large degree of DevSecOps coverage, as well as numerous case studies, but don't expect specifics or how-to details. Honestly, that would require this book to be a volume series. Technical and non-technical audiences can derive value from the book, although the book doesn't shy away from some technical aspects. Consider this a capstone book with various other books to provide the details. If your new to DevOps, or want to get a vision for it's potential, as well as strong indicators for how to implementing it (without the implementation minutia), this is one of the best books I've found to date.

Not so much as a handbook as more hype about DevOps. I mean DevOps is great and all that, but this book is not going to be much help implementing it.

Having worked in teams where DevOps is practiced and those where it is not, I can tell you from experience: This is the way to manage a software enterprise."The DevOps Handbook" offers a comprehensive picture of DevOps practice, giving just enough detail on each topic to know where to begin and what it looks like when you're doing it right. Examples are multitude, and the style is clear.I highly recommend this book for any one looking to improve their teams' ability to coherently problem solve.

While The Phoenix Project is a fictional based story about DevOps and how to institute DevOps practices, the story takes place over 90 days. In many (larger) places, the ability to implement all that's in The Phoenix Project at that timescale is not realistic. But it still has value in showing you how an organization can use the principles to achieve what the fictional organization in The Phoenix Project ultimately achieved. This book then gets into the nitty-gritty details about the practices used in The Phoenix Project and how they're beneficial for transforming your organization. It's a great addition to The Phoenix Project.

I am 90% sure they were looking at me through the door hole keyhole when writing this... Reading this publication is like opening the valve of your brain towards a whole new approach.Warning: You will be starving for a lot of other great books while reading this. Being "the goal" by Eli Goldartt the most prominent.

From Library Journal

In this third book of the publisher's "Fundamentals" series, Santa Fe-based Huna scholar Berney approaches a subject almost entirely disregarded in modern writings for a general audience: Hawaiian religion and spirituality. Huna spirituality, as Berney seems to understand it, can be a little difficult to differentiate from the New Age practices of the newer religions and meditation styles, and some may be frustrated by her rather general and nonscholarly approach, but it may be valuable for many libraries to have a first book on this little-known subject. For larger collections strong in spirituality. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The Huna concept of the Triple Soul has profoundly affected my view of my own life, and has been invaluable in my dealing with my own depression, anxiety, and other issues, and Berney's work is excellent at exploring what each Soul is, how each functions, how each Soul relates to each other Soul, and, most important, the book gives practical but deep excercises to explore your own inner Soul dynamics. The book also goes into other aspects of Huna and Hawaiian spirituality, providing a very holistic framework that can apply to most every area of life, such as conflict resolution, and in working out of the psyche the deeply embedded prejudices or negative thinking of an oppresive upbringing. Now, the major flaw of this book is that the reader has to have a sharp and discerning eye to look out for where New Age philosophy takes over. For example: when the author describes St. Michael the Archangel as the chief guardian spirit of Huna. Were no Hawaiian spirits available? This is the most glaring example of several occasions where New Age ideas are presented rather than something authentically Hawaiian. Berney does deserve credit, however, for being very upfront in this volume from the get-go that she is presenting Huna; she doesn't claim things are "ancient Hawaiian" when they are, in fact, Huna: a fairly contemporary synthesis of New Thought and traditional Hawaiian beliefs and ideas.I give the book 4 stars because I very often return to its Triple Soul sections. They have proven so helpful that I can forgive the New Age parts of the book.

In the Hawaiian language, words have multiple levels of meaning. The word ha'ole for example, has the root 'ha' meaning breath, and the word ole meaning without. So the word used initially to describe missionaries that came to Hawaii, has the secondary meaning, those who pray without breath.Within this book is an explanation of the ha rite, which uses breath combined with prayer (intention) to generate mana which is sent to your higher self to manifest what you want in your life. This is a very powerful technique.I have combined what I have gotten from this book and a few other sources, and using my intuition have come up with something very effective. The Huna commandment on page 72 is not to harm another. So using this technique to interfere with someone's free will would not be appropriate. If you do wish to focus on someone work for their highest good. If you wish to manifest love in your life, you can have a person in mind who seems ideal, but ask for this if they are agreeable on a higher self level or for someone equal or greater. In this book you will find described many concepts such as ho'oponopono, and the concept of the three selves, middle self (ego), lower self, (subconscious or hidden self), and the higher self (superconscious or superego). According to this system you would integrate all these aspects of self, and clear out the blocks or complexes within your lower self so you can manifest through your higher self.Further reading I recommend would be 'Mastering your hidden self' by Serge Sahili King, which also describes the Shamanic principles for creating your own reality. These were life changing for me. I also highly recommend "Go up and work with God' by Vianna Stibal, a healer. In that book she describes a manifesting ritual from her Huna studies. An excellent book.Secret Science behind Miracles by Max Freedom Long is a must read book if you want to learn more from the pioneer who discovered what was until then a secret philosphy.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that is interested in HUNA as a way of life.I wish to commend Ms. Berney for being the only HUNA author that began in the steps of Max Freedom Long (MFL) for gathering information from Hawaiian sources and including a subset of the Akua (deities) the Hawaiians acknowledged."Hawaiian Magic And Spirituality" Scott Cunningham has a more complete list of the Akua, a list of various types of kahunas. and even information about the little people (the menehune) of Hawaii. To be an effective HUNA practitioner you must bring the three selves into harmony. Ms. Berney gives simple exercizes in assisting the three selves reach harmony and balance. Each of the three selves has a distinct job to do in crafting an effective HUNA prayer action. The Uhane (middle self) decides what will be prayed for. Select your prayer picture wisely. Choose a prayer picture as if the prayer has already been manifested (This allows the Aumakua (high self) to use the path of least resistance to manifest your prayer. The Unihipili (low or basic self) gathers a surcharge of mana (Hawaiian term for universal lifeforce energy), then sends the energy and the prayer picture to the Aumakua. The Aumakua will take the surcharge and mana, and ramp it up to mana loa, and uses the prayer picture, and the mana loa to bring your prayer picture into manifestation on the physical plane. Most of the prayer actions fail because the Unihipili has complexes and fixations (guilt, fear, shame, wrong ideas about money, etc), and feels unworthy of requesting help, and will not send the prayer picture and mana to the Aumakua. The Aumakua tries to maintain harmony and balance, and will not assist in prayer actions that violate harmony and balance. On page 72; Ms. Berney lists the HUNA vow that her teachers taught her. If you want to memorize and live by her vow; be my guest because it has some wonderful precepts. However; I recommend people memorize a four word tenet "Harm nothing with hatred". If you will live by those four words; you will keep all of the precepts in the HUNA vow.I have two nitpicks about this book.1. In places; she seems to imply there was one kind of kahuna. There were various kinds of kahuna. The title "kahuna" means master or expert.2. This book has one weak area. That of assisting you in clearing the Unihipili of complexes and fixations. Ms. Berney recommends that you read the books by John Bainbridge, or visit a Vector Counselor. There are simple rituals you can perform in order to persuade the Unihipili that you are aware of your errors, and have a sincere desire to make ammends. E-Mail me if you want assistance. Two Bears. You may want to view my two HUNA listmania lists or my HUNA "So you would like to" list.Aloha nui loa (I love you very much)

Great work and the amount of effort put into the workbook shows. Extremely beneficial supplement it's "easy to follow" format. We often hear names of narrators like Abu Hurairah, Imam Bukhari, and Imam Muslim not really paying attention to what their real names were or when they passed or their virtues and why the're well known. This book along with following the lessons brings all that to the forefront. Excellent supplement for anyone following the class online. We're only on the 4th lesson so plenty of time to get it and follow along.

Perfect for use with class. I would advise prefer the physical book as opposed to the kindle version.
