The book covers the material very well. It is clear and easy to read. The Kindle edition though is a mess. All of the code samples and diagrams are really low Rez are barely readable. Kindle has some weird gesture to be able to zoom in on the images (because the code samples, yes amazingly, the code samples are low Rez pixelated images) and even then, the images are very low Rez. Even knowing what the code is supposed to be, I can barely make it out. I have enclosed an image of a code sample. No, that isn’t encrypted, it actually looks like that.
I recently purchased both this and the "Beginners Guide vol 1" by Chuck Hellebuyck. Hands down the Wilmshurst book is the winner. Yes, it is a textbook, and spends way too much time in assembly before getting to C. But for depth of material, clarity, and overall value this book is one of the stars of my technical books. Even with numerous PIC C tutorials on the web, the completeness and depth of this book make it a welcome addition on my journey into embedded programming. Updating to much more C examples, better introductory MPLAB coverage (highlighting C) would be welcome, but am very happy overall with the book. Buy your own and see.
The experience of working with embedded systems design (for me) is half software and half hardware. Software consumes more of my time, and yet there is little to no useful software information in this book. I skimmed through the entire book in an hour to get everything useful that I had not learned in a single semester of tinkering with PIC microcontrollers (specifically the PIC16f887).
Very well written and concise introduction to Micro controllers. The book provides clear coverage of the major concepts including enough cross over material for engineers and programmers moving from larger platforms such as the PC to clearly understand the differences, and it does so without labouring or dwelling on material. From comparison to many other books I have read, I would consider this book to be excellent for beginners as well as nothing is bypassed even though the book is economically written. This is a very well written book and a welcome addition to my bookshelf.
This book is a thorough guide on starting to use assembler and then C to design embedded systems on PIC uCs.It is a no-nonsense reference that cuts to the chase. I have been using assembler for 10 years and still found the assembler portion of the book very informative. The reason I purchased the book however is to start moving over to C. For this too, the book is really helpful and explains all the things I previously didn't understand (and typically ignored) when it comes to header files, object files, libraries, compilers, linkers, RTOS etc. Congratulations to Tim Wilmshurst on an excellent book.
This book is outstanding! Just how outstanding it is, is difficult to appreciate until you've read other books in the genre. Extremely well organized with excellent explanations. This book is an enjoyable read, neither being tediously academic nor hobby-level shallow. In a shelf full of books on embedded design I cannot find another book which manages to find a starting point that is easily grasped, then grow it without a multitude of sidebars trying to 'pre-explain' pre-requisites.I don't really believe that you can be a good embedded programmer without understanding the hardware, but many books try. This is not one of them. Much of the book uses assembly language, which helps the reader develop an understanding of the 'metal', but this may be off-putting to some.This is an introductory book, and not for the practicing embedded systems designer, but as such I know of no equal to it. Now if only the author would create an AVR-based book to capitalize on their current popularity!
very nice book and nice layout. and the selection of the micro controllers to increasing level of instruction set and features as we go ahead is very beneficial for a novice, and at the same time loads of examples serve as a reference i its own right.the language and presentation is also very simple. all in all a very useful book.thanks for very helpful authoring.
Covers both assembly language and C. Detailed and deeply discussed. Does use another microchip that needs to be purchased and played with, but overall is a very important reference. Starts simple and builds rapidly. Will likely be one of three of four retained references.
