In this erudite, yet at times, funny treatise, Rabbi Sherwin discusses ten loosely related topics of Jewish scholarship. To tie them together, the author introduces the work with a "program for Jewish scholarship" quoting his mentor Abraham Joshua Heschel, "After the Holocaust, Jewish scholarship should be devoted to that which advances Judaism." The ten topics are as follows: philoshophies of law; the nature of ethics; health and healing; euthanasia; charity; repentence; parent-child relationships; bar and bat mitzvot; "the sanctity of life in an age of violence;" and the golem.One chapter I found worthy of noting in particular is the rabbi's controversial stand on euthanasia, the rabbi approving of it under certain conditions.Sherwin's scholarship is impressive, yet at times the sledding is heavy going. So be prepared for a heavy read, but a rewarding one.In one concluding chapter, which is well worth the price of admission, Rabbi Sherwin provides us with the solution to our inability to recreate the golem. Citing Israel of Rhyzen, he provides us with this timeless wisdom, well worth any tribulations which the reader may have experienced along the way: "Judah Loew of Prague created a 'Golem,' and this was a great wonder. But how much more wonderful it is to transform a man of flesh and blood into a 'mensch' [a morally developed human person]."
