I would have given this book a 5 star review if the author bothered to include an overall map for each of the sections. Great descriptions of trails, good general info, but what a pain in the neck to use for someone who has no idea how much of a driving distance it is between various trailheads for routes described here. So, as we are planning a week long camping trip, planning to split the time between 2 campgrounds, each of those with convenient access to moderate to challenging routes, I have to stare at the trail map, try to figure out the nearest road on the map, locate it in google earth, pin it, then go back to the book, get the next interesting route 'nearby', repeat and so on. We want to do lots of hiking and little driving - especially considering the recommendation to leave very early and turn around by 11.30. Thank god the campground book has a general map - overlaying that one over my google earth creation is relatively simple.Bottom line - if you live in Colorado, you should have no problem using this book. But if you are coming from elsewhere, get ready for lots of map research - more than necessary!

great detail

This book gives very good descriptions of hikes and parks which we found useful. One very big gripe though. We drove from the Nashville area to Colorado for one of those big trip-of-a-lifetime trips, pulled the camper and wrangled the dog all the way out there. Did our homework and planned the trip to a tee. It all came off great until we got to Roxborough State Park, right outside of Littleton, which this book describes as allowing dogs on leash. When we tried to enter the park, they turned us away because we have a dog. When we asked if we could enter and keep him in the truck, the answer was a big no. They said they had heard of this book and contacted the publisher, but it's still not corrected. They said the park has always had this rule. That's a big error for a travel book, especially one that describes destinations where travelers will tend to travel long distances to visit, and plan entire days (those precious few vacation days 1200 miles from home!) according to its guidance.Author and publisher deserve a black eye for this not being corrected yet. How many other errors are in this book? This is the only one we found, and this is the only park to which we referred in this particular book. Unfortunately I will not have the confidence to use this book in the future without doing thorough fact-checking, but I'd rather just buy another book.

an excellent, nearly thorough guide to hiking in Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver, Colorado Springs, southern Wyoming, and various points west. Apt is a superb writer and clearly a lover of nature rather than someone out to prove his ultra-fitness or mountaineering expertise -- a large number of the hikes are very modest outings suitable for young children or the elderly.Just one major criticism: some strange inclusions and exclusions for a book with Denver/Boulder in the title. A number of hikes in Steamboat Springs and Wyoming are included, for instance -- both are a very sizable drive from anywhere on the Colorado front range except perhaps Fort Collins. Yet some truly awesome and popular hikes much closer to Denver/Boulder are excluded: 4th of July trailhead hikes west of Boulder are an especially glaring omission, as some of the most spectacular hiking in the country originates there. (Perhaps Apt wants to keep that increasingly popular area as much of a secret as possible.) Another strange omission, given Apt's somewhat Fort Collins-centric approach, are any of the trails in the main part of State Forest west of Fort Collins: anything north of route 14.

I have a bookcase full of books on hiking in Colorado. But when I'm looking to choose a hike, this is the first book I grab out of my stuffed bookcase. Why? It has a lot of variety to it: nearby hikes and hikes a bit of a drive away; challenging hikes and easy hikes; popular hikes and those off the beaten trail a bit. The descriptions are perfect. You know what to expect before you get there (so you can select hikes that fit your companions' abilities) and the directions are easy to understand and follow. This is the best hiking book I've ever owned. That's why I've bought it as a gift for others. I highly recommend it.

I loved this book. The Afoot and Afield series is a great series, and this is one of the best books in the series. The author is obviously somebody who has spent many, many hours "afoot in the field," and this book is like having a happy, knowledgeable, easy to be with hiking companion. Well worth the price. Well worth picking up and keeping for many, many hours of hiking pleasure. I hike a lot, and this book has added depth and feeling and expertise to my outings. I really liked it. Appreciate its details and overviews. I can highly recommend it.

Most of the hikes listed are not in the Denver area. Very few county "open space" hikes, for example. So this is not the book to buy if you are looking for good hikes close in to Denver. There is a good selection of Boulder area hikes.

Alan Apt's latest trail guide makes a good armchair companion during the winter months. Being an avid hiker but over 70 years old, I'm sometimes asked to take other senior citizens on hikes and Apt's trail descriptions have already given me a half dozen new destinations. Clear writing, excellent details and a little touch of humor now and then make this a favorite of mine for evening browsing and wishing.

Peter Megargee Brown's delightful collection of tips on questioning for the litigating attorney should be almost as much fun for the layman. It is full of wit and wisdom and shrewd insights, and the chapters read like short plays. --Louis Auchincloss

This book should be required reading for all trial advocates. It reveals, step by step, how both lawyers and non-lawyers can ask the right question and to get the answer they want. Effective inquiry, Mr Brown concludes, is a skill that can be learned to gain success in almost every line of endeavour. The key to the teaching of this art of questioning was the deep study of the various techniques employed by those professional masters who spent their lifetime developing incisive, searching questions for their law cases. As Sir Francis Bacon said, "A prudent question is one half of wisdom". Keep in mind that all questions need not be dead serious. We deserve some fun in life. Try to formulate and, if you can, write down your question. Keep it short and hone your inquiry. Leave out elliptical clauses, qualifying phrases, asides, irrelevancies, jokes and historical quotes and references. Go for the jugular. At the least, review your question two or three times in your head, including your emphasis. Cross-examination is the keenest test of truth and more penetrating than an affidavit. Emory R Buckner, a noted advocate, emphasized that preparation (or getting all the relevant facts before the start of the contest) was the trial's single most important event. Stated in its barest terms, Mr Brown's thesis is that if the witness hasn't hurt you, don't cross-examine. If you do cross-examine, have a specific objective in mind - prepare thoroughly to achieve your objective, and once you have accomplished it, sit down. Digest this book and your advocacy skills will increase dramatically.

As a student of the art of advocacy, I had read several articles or columns by the author. I ordered this without knowing quite what I'd get. I think that Peter Megaree Brown passes along a lot of solid advice. But whether one agrees with all of his maxims or not, Mr. Brown's storytelling is enchanting and his observations illuminating. The author recounts, among many other first-hand experiences, that when he was a young law clerk, Learned Hand used to come downstairs periodically to share with the law clerks his thoughts about successful advocacy. Hearing Judge Hand's observations from one who absorbed and applied them is, by itself, pretty much worth the relatively modest price of admission.

Half the book was giving credit to some case that someone won rather than being informative as to method of questioning. The information for learning that was for learning could have been contained in a pamphlet, unless you were wanting a history lesson.

This book presents anecdotal stories to make a point. But it fails to show how things ought to be done. Stated differently, it is a series of war stories, quite similar to Francis Wellman's The Art of Cross Examination. I would recommend Your Witness, advice given by 50 top Chicago lawyers, edited by Steven F. Molo and James R. Figliulo, and MacCarthy on Cross-Examination, by Terence F. MacCarthy.

Excellent

its ok

This is a nice little refresher handbook to have around at the law office. As with most books aimed at the legal profession, it's way overpriced. I'm not sure when I purchased this 1987 publication, but it had to be 1994 or 95 and I know it wasn't $18.95 then. Since reading it 20 years ago, I've gone to it probably 2 or 3 times for 2 or 3 minutes each time. Were this $5.95, I'd heartily give it 5 stars. But at $18.95(!), no way can I give more than 3.

Quite a short book, but with lots of thumbnail sketches of little maneuvers in law cases. It's not as good as one might wish for ascertaining useful techniques of cross-examination, but it is a subtle book, pointing out things that might not be naturally noted when dealing with a hostile (or defensive) person. My interest in this book originated with my criminal-defense lawyer brother, but since I am a philosopher, I have to argue with hostile students everyday. Thus, I could use some useful pointers on fruitful and effective questioning. I get the feeling this is a little book that should be reviewed every once in a while as a review of effective questioning. Definitely worth the price, and an easy read too.

Do you have the old edition? Are you considering whether or not to get the 10th anniversary edition? I initially vacillated back and forth, trying to decide whether or not to do it. I generally don't like wasting money, and try to avoid unnecessary repurchasing of things I already have. Ultimately, obviously, I did get the new edition, and was very glad I did so.Let's take a step back and say that the cookbooks of Isa Chandra Moskowitz, a number of which were co-written with Terry Hope Romero, changed my life. I've been a vegetarian/vegan for a while, and I've owned different of vegetarian/vegan cookbooks, and I've always cooked, but something about Ida and Terry's stuff is on a whole other level. It's like the apex of the form. The book Isa Does It was the first cookbook I owned where I just went through and cooked almost everything, one after another. The results always seemed to range from "Unbelieveably Good" to "Really, Really Good." I love the diversity of the recipes, including curries, nori roles, pies, pizzas, tofu/tempeh/seitan creations, comfort foods to fancy stuff, quick and easy meals to more involved. And the books are charmingly written, the attitude best described as punk, urban, DYI, and funny, and I appreciate that this attitude was never entirely lost/abandoned as time went on and mainstream acceptance must have been a lure. After finding their work, I started cooking a whole lot more, and now I'd say that cooking is a bit of a hobby. If I had the energy, I'd cook every night. Their cookbooks were instrumental in that development. The new edition is gorgeous. It's a nice, sturdy hardcover without a slip cover. The cover illustration looks great -- an ornate V immersed in various growy green things, all in different shades of green. The front and rear cover is glossy, and the inside pages are of a higher quality than before. The formatting has been changed; in essence, the new edition looks very similar to Isa Does It and The Superfun Times Vegan Holidary Cookbook, which makes sense because the copyright page says that the book was designed by Laura Palese, who, as it turns out, also designed Isa Does It and Superfun Times. Most recipes now occupy their own page. The recipes themselves are easy to read and are well organized, and include mini-intros, notes, tips, and icons. It looks like some of the recipe's mini-intros have been revised. The Amazon blurb claims that 250 recipes have been revised, and the text now includes 25 new recipes. There's new intros written by both the authors, but it still includes the old one. And there's the addition of photographs, which, frankly, adds a lot. I'm not sure if they were also taken by Vanessa Rees or Joshua Foo, who worked on Isa Does It and Superfun Time (for some reason I couldn't find the photograph attributions in this new edition), but they are similar in style and are beautiful. My only gripe (if you can even call it that), is that I prefer cookbook bindings/spines that are designed to lay flat. Isa Does It has this type of binding/spine, but Superfun Times and the Veganomicon doesn't either. It's nice when you don't have to put a stack of CDs or whatever on the corner to try to keep it down, etc. But the old edition didn't have it either, and it's be no means a deal breaker.I highly recommend this new edition. If you are new to Ida/Terry and don't have the old edition, this is the one to get of the two. If you have the old edition and are considering getting the new one, do it. It isn't essential to switch, I mean, you will survive just fine with the old one, but the changes are aesthetically and content-lly substantial enough to justify a new purchase, as it feels like an entirely new book. Some call this The Joy of Vegan Cooking. Well, this essential tome just got even more essential-er.

I received this today, and have to admit I was surprised to see a 4 star review. This is a beautiful cookbook with loads of information and updated recipes. Realize there were no kale recipes in the original and this flaw has been fixed thoroughly. If you have other Isa cookbooks, you will see a few similar recipes, but most of these are fabulous and I can't wait to try them. Because I have allergies, I always have to alter the recipes slightly, but I can tell you that bones of every recipe I've ever tried of these authors stands up to the indiginities my allergies cause! They teach enough here to allow anyone from a novice to an expert to learn how to prepare wonderful, nutritious food that will stun and amaze your vegan and nonvegan friends. I will be taking a few of these dishes to a vegan potluck at the end of the month, and I know I don't even have to try them first! Isa and Terry have convinced from their other books that they are great and inventive cooks who have mastered the art of vegan cooking. I looked at the original ten years ago and it looked too complicated. This one is not at all intimidating and is a joy to hold in my hands.

Minor changes. Appreciate addition of color photos, not sure if it was worth expense of re-purchasing.

I bought this book as a gift for a colleague, but was so captivated that I bought other copies for my self and family members! The photos are enticing and the recipes themselves are divine! Isa's wit and commentary is the icing on the cake, pun intended! This book and the How Not to Die cookbook (by Dr. Michael Greger) are the only two cookbooks anyone would need!

Mostly good recipes, but also some poor ones. Initially I thought the book was excellent - thick paper, good pictures, etc.. One problem is that the binding is terrible and I’m quickly ending up with lots of loose pages. Another problem is that the type on the ingredients lists are so small that the fractions require a magnifying glass to distinguish, for example, between 1/3 and 1/2. So, 4 stars for the contents and 1 star for the binding and printing.

I already owned the first edition of Veganomicon and decided to get this anniversary edition so that I could keep my first edition in our vacation home, and I love this anniversary edition. The photos and the way they edited the overall book is fantastic and if you don't have the first edition I highly recommend you get the anniversary edition, this is a must have for Vegan cooking, or even if you aren't Vegan and want to eat more vegetables and less meat.

We checked this out from our public library and after looking at it for one day, had to order it. We now use this book every day! Thank you!

I am a horrible cook, which can be a problem for a vegetarian. It’s probably even harder for one trying to be vegan. This book not only gives you recipes but also teaches you how to cook. I have made 3 dishes in this book for my, meat eating, family and they enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not turning my, meat eating, family vegan but a couple days of good vegan food a week, not bad.
