Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West

Review

Ken Burns Stephen Ambrose is that rare breed: a historian with true passion for his subject. Here he takes one of the great, but also one of the most superficially considered, stories in American history and breathes fresh life into it. Lewis comes alive as we've never known him.

From the Publisher

Undaunted Courage is the story of a heroic and legendary man, and the saga of a great nation creating itself. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson chose Captain Meriwether Lewis to lead the first government- backed exploration of the vast and unknown western territory of what would become part of the United States. Lewis was the perfect choice. Undaunted Courage is first and foremost a significant, scholarly work, yet it reads like an adventure novel filled with high drama, suspense, and personal tragedy. It brings to life the times and circumstances of Meriwether Lewis and his unprecedented expedition, and renews our wonder of the vastness of our country and the heroics of our forefathers.

This piece of work is one which should be studied in every high school in the country. The bravery displayed and the adversity faced by the members of this expedition are not to be believed. It is easy in this day and time to downplay the significance of this journey, however by reading this account, a full appreciation of the hazards faced by the expedition can perhaps be attained. No maps, hostile Indian tribes, constant hunger, wild animals and constant insect infestation (clouds of mosquitoes drove some mad), bitter weather, etc.The picture painted by Ambrose is vivid. A fascinating story told by a less talented writer and historian would not have been nearly as effective.

I had never read about the Lewis and Clark expedition other than learning about it casually during school. This book opened my eyes up to how the world was in the late 18th century and early 19th century, and I was shocked by the amount of precision Ambrose put into the book, as is usual with him. Everything from the preparation of the expedition to the return trip was very precise and in a whole very interesting. Ambrose wrote it to be read almost like a novel, a great adventure by a group of a mere 30 people into the great unknown, where the president even thought that woolly mammoths and other great creatures might still reside. Ambrose gives a great look at all of the Indian tribes and their lifestyles that were encountered on the trip, and a vivid description of the wildlife and surrounding geography. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is even casually interested in American history to someone who is very interested in history as I am.

I read the book years ago and have to say it is one of my all time favorite books. Before a long road trip I decided to buy the 22 hour CD version so that I could "read" the book again and others with me could have the pleasure of hearing the fantastic history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This long book could not have been easy to read, but Barrett Whitener does a super job. Honestly, I prefer reading paper books to listening to books or reading on a Kindle, but Mr. Whitener makes me forget that I'm listening instead of reading. This is an unabridged set which includes much early history of Meriwether Lewis and his history after the Expedition was over.

Spectacular is the first and last word that comes to mind in thinking about this gloriously told story. While the opening pages come near to bogging down in seemingly endless detail about Lewis and Clark's preparation for their monumental voyage and the various supplies they laid in, the trip itself is described in breathtakingly brilliant, gripping prose. No wonder history courses seldom receive high marks-- teachers are ill equipped to share the adrenaline soaring adventures of our many real life American heroes. Lewis and Clark were U.S. Army commanders of the highest caliber. They focused on their men and their nearly impossible mission in equal measure. Their bravery and intelligence under often horrific conditions-- cold, wet, blizzards, not enough to eat, sometimes hostile Indians, and on and on-- ultimately carried the day and lit one more candle or torch for their famous, one of a kind leader and mentor, President Jefferson and our still new nation.Lewis's unraveling and acute illness when he assumed a political post after the expedition was over is heart breaking. He became terribly ill, ultimately committing suicide while still in his 30's, and there didn't seem to be anyone available to help him. Or, of course, the sort of medications routinely available to modern day physicians. Despite his ignominious and terrible slide toward death by his own hand, Meriwether Lewis stands with his great friend William Clark as one of the best men our armed forces ever saw.

I thought I had some modicum of understanding of the famous trek west by these two historic icons until I read " Undaunted Courage ". Stephen Ambrose almost makes the reader feel like she/he is there while all the decisions are being made and our Congress of the day debates funding the trip as well as approving the funds for the Louisiana Purchase which they thought would be a bust. Congress? some things don't change.. Beyond that, the summary of the trip preparation and the actual trip itself is fascinating. How so few men could achieve what they did, when they did it in an unknown land filled with dangerous marauding natives may be one of the single greatest American achievements ever. Kudos to Stephen Ambrose and kudos to Thomas Jefferson for insisting the Lewis and Clark sojourn take place. This is a great read for anyone interested in substantive American history and the American spirit to accept and overcome formidable challenges..

Having met Stephen Ambrose when he was staying at the Horse Prairie Ranch (the possible location of where Louis met his first Shoshone while trying to obtain horses) I can personally testify to Ambrose's dedication to make Undaunted Courage as historically accurate and vividly described as possible.Like all other historical books written by Stephen Ambrose, Undaunted Courage was meticulously researched and is well written. It stands out among the many works written about the now famous Louis and Clark Expedition and is considered by many authorities to be the most accurate account. Those who read for enjoyment will find this book entertaining and easy to read, while those doing research will find it an invaluable source of information.

This is an involving story solidly told, doing credit to its inspiration and sources.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Eshbaugh debuts with an exciting and unusual adventure with emphasis on the power of storytelling.” (Publishers Weekly)“Eshbaugh creates a spare yet memorable account of the interpersonal and interclan politics. There is much to value here.” (ALA Booklist)“Eshbaugh packs her debut with a classic love triangle, feuding clans, a well-drawn prehistoric setting, and a handful of fan fiction elements that will appeal to teens. Compellingly out of the ordinary.” (School Library Journal)“The Ice Age setting is richly described, and the sometimes desperate struggle for food and survival is palpable. Highly recommended; readers will be anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“There is clear authenticity in the descriptions, and they evoke the desperation, loyalty, and determination that a small group like this would have likely felt.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“Hands down the most unique debut YA novel of the year.” (PasteMagazine.com)

This main plot is about Kol from the Manu clan and his focus on one woman, Mya. If there are any allusions going on it is with the movie 10,000 B.C. The story is told in first person from the perspective of Kol. Roughly for the first three quarters of the book the story is told in a narration from his perspective of his meeting her and following events that led them to where he starts to tell the story. Oral tradition is how history was passed from generation to generation in the past and this narration is reminiscent of that. The romantic in me absolutely loves this because he is so detailed in his thoughts, feelings, and honesty. He holds nothing back and I love how the author was able to keep the narration so well and from his perspective. Truly well written and not just his narration but she does an excellent job of the world construction for pre-historic times but unfortunately for me I kept envisioning 10,000 B.C.Kol’s deepest desire is for Mya to see him, to want him, to trust him, to be his. Mya is from the Olen clan and there is a bad history between these two clans that almost led to a war five years ago. Kol is unaware of exactly what the catalyst was that led to the tensions between clans but his fascination with Mya is the spark that starts his mind pondering. That spark has opened his awareness to why Mya and her clan are not so open to the idea of the clans aligning and later on explains the poor treatment of his clan.Seems that clan Olen also have a few skeletons in their closet. Unbeknownst to either clan Manu or Olen there is a third clan, the Bosha, in the background who have a nefarious interest in the extinction of the Olen elder, Chev, and his family. Through deception this third clan is almost able to bring their plan to fruition but things do not go as planned thanks to the bravery of Kol.For most of the book, I found the whole character of Mya to be a turn off. I wanted Kol to just move on and seek greener pastures. Had I been his friend I would have definitely been trying to push him to be sensible because the girl has issues. In the last quarter of this book my feelings for her started to thaw because as things came to light I began to understand the “why” to her behaviors.Kol, now there is a guy after my heart even if he is a bit naive. Yes, naive because he is fixated on a girl that is not worthy of him or seemingly interested in him. I found his character to be well rounded and well developed. The imagery that I see when I think back about his narration in the re-telling of his perspective of Mya just makes me love this character.I felt that the ideas were developed, the sub plots were tied together nicely and that the writing style was original, although there are some issues with the modern voice in a pre-historic setting. The story was pretty slow until the end where the climax was quite tumultuous. Also, I am not against “insta-love” if it is believable to me. Kol was inexperienced with females and given how the story was told he was fascinated by Mya but is that due to lack of previous options or experience? It just came across as “puppy love” to me and was hard for me to take seriously. If he had previously had female options and took no interest and then he met Mya and wowwzza then I would have been able to take his fascination seriously. The biggest turn off for me was the first person voice. Everything is from Kol’s perspective and I get nothing from Mya’s. There is no sidekick to add to the discussion and bring some deepening of the characters. So I just have his thoughts and feelings on everything but I felt that they were the thoughts and feelings of a pre-pubescent boy. Any seventeen-year-old boy would have some inner thoughts that were not pure and rational. I would have liked to known Mya’s side of things. Her inner thoughts, how she felt about Kol, her struggles and desires. There was so much good with this story but there were just some issues that I could not get past to fangirl about this book. It is a great debut novel from an obviously talented writer and I am hoping for more in the next book.

I had read the first chapter of this book and knew I needed to read this. It is a much different type of book than I normally read. I was hooked from the beginning and read this book in 1 day. It was a fast paced roller-coaster ride. I loved that the story was told as Kol was telling a story to Mya about when they met and all that had happened. This story takes place a long time ago when mammoths roamed the earth and life was much simpler. Tribes were responsible for collecting, harvesting, hunting, and procreating to protect their line. Kol’s tribe has no girls in it anymore so they are in danger of dying out. Mya, her sister, and some of their tribe come to visit in hopes of creating a union between the two but things go wrong. Mya is standoffish and seems to be cold and indifferent to Kol. Kol isn’t quite sure what to think of her. He can’t stop thinking about her but she is so odd that he can’t heads or tails of what to do. So much is riding on a union that he stresses over their interactions.I loved the twists and turns this book took and the action and adventure. Even though times were simpler then, they were definitely not easy. This book made me think about all the obstacles and complexities that man faced to continue living in such a harsh environment. They had no medical help, no real tools, no real protection from the elements. Yet, they managed to persevere and thrive. It’s amazing what one can accomplish if you are determined.

I'm a sucker for anything based on Pride & Prejudice, add-in gender flipping and I'm hooked. This book has both, plus the writing is crisp and clear with characters you can't wait to get back to and harrowing life or death situations. I started this book, was loving it, then accidentally forgot to shove it in my carry-on bag on the way out of town for a 3 week trip. I was SO MAD at myself that I sulked for half the plane ride. I don't know if I was more happy to finally be home, or to get back to this book after an unintended absence. Highly recommend.

I was thoroughly engaged throughout this book. As a teacher of reluctant teenage readers, I especially appreciate a story set in a time period that my students wouldn't be too familiar with, yet whose characters face issues that are very familiar. Today's physical dangers may be different - we don't have to worry about wild animals around the corner - but the idea of friendly vs hostile clan is relevant, and in today's world provides its own perils. Of course individual issues such as finding our place and falling in love are timeless. Good read!

Really enjoyed this. Particularly liked the young couple at the heart of the story. Believable prehistoric setting. Sometimes, the explaining of what went wrong between clans felt a bit laborious. I think the main villain could've been more full developed as a character. But excellent writing overall and I look forward to more by Julie Eshbaugh.

i can say I've never really read a caveman/ ice age book before and I have to say I really enjoyed it! I loved level-headed Kol and his family, I was entertained and fascinated by the details of their lives and what it took to survive and live in that time. I was frustrated in Mya but somehow still rooting for her and I was thoroughly swept up in the story.

This item was perfect and was exactly what i was expecting. The item came in no time and was very well packaged and in a great shape. I'm very happy and pleased with the item i received and want to thank the seller for a terrific product.

Pretty good stuff, but I think this was pretty basic. I liked the writing, and liked the perspective provided by a world-class athlete; but overall, I did not find much new for me. I surely think younger (less experienced?) athletes could pick up several nuggets of wisdom here, so if you are eager to find an "edge" or solve a mental/emotional "weakness" in your game, then by all means give this book a read.Mental training, and controlling emotions are a HUGE part of achievement in many areas of life, so I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book-it is a fun and easy read, but it just didn't give me a lot of new information.

A friend of mine posted an online comment about this book that caught my attention so I decided to read it. My friend is a much better athlete than I am and competes in marathons and triathlons throughout the year, so I expected this book to be aimed at elite athletes. I was a little intimidated, but decided to read it, anyway. I'm glad I did. I believe this book can be very helpful to athletes at all levels; not just elites. The authors explain that you are controlled mentally by three parts of your brain that each influence your decisions differently. They call the first your 'chimp brain' which is your limbic system and makes fight or flight decisions to help you react to situations immediately. Next is your professor brain, which is your frontal cortex and waits to gather facts before making decisions. The third is your computer brain, which uses many regions of your brain, including memory, to help determine the best decision. When you try to motivate yourself to get out and train or race, deal with injuries, or when you actually get out to race, your different brains fight each other for control. Your decisions are based on which brain wins. This book goes into detail about how to tell which brain is 'winning' and how to ensure you are making the best decision. From my description, you might think it is best if the computer brain always wins. That's not really always the case, though, and this book explains why. It's a great book for any athlete who ever thinks about what they're doing. As you might expect from the title, this book is full of 'adult language.' That, to me, is its one drawback. Maybe the authors thought the language would make their book more conversive or 'cool.' I just think that was unnecessary and could turn some readers off. That's the only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five.

A phenomenal read... and fun too! Don't think it is just for athletes. From entrepreneurs to students to stay-at-home moms, this book helps you get in your own head and figure out what is holding you back from reaching your goals.

Not your normal motivational read - and that is a good thing!!! This book will make you feel normal in your own everyday thoughts, athlete or not. It will not only help you be a better athlete, but also a better parent, friend and spouse. Great ideas that are applicable in everyday life. It will keep you interested, and laughing along the way. I even highlighted a few of the chapters for my own 12 year old to help him with skills in sports (and life!). You will read it over and over and it is the perfect book for your nightstand.

I was skeptical about their metaphor of a chimp brain, at first. I worried it would be pop psycho-babble crap like "alpha dogs" among dog trainers. But the authors' metaphor won me over because they use it so efficiently and consistently across the book. And I really appreciate that the authors know endurance sports so well.

Couldn't put this book down! It is truly a must-read for all athletes, from first time 5k runner to seasoned ironman triathletes. The Brave Athlete covers the basics of your emotional and mental drivers (aka the chimp, the professor and the soulless computer), and how they come into play when facing the struggles in sports: race anxiety, body image issues, injury coping, sucking-up the suck and so on. Using this information and plenty of real-life stories, Dr. Marshall provides easy to understand guidelines on how (you guessed it) to calm down and rise to the occasion. Reading the book and working through the exercises helped me a lot dealing with my anxiety before race starts and finding the mental toughness to push through when it gets hard. The Brave Athlete is written in the context of endurance sports, but really it's applicable to pretty much life in general. Just replace "swim start" with "new professional endeavor" or "first date" and so on... Icing on the cake: The Brave Athlete is hilariously funny written and very entertaining to read.

Good, light read for athletes who are competitive, but looking for that mental edge to pull them out of a slump!

I do not usually recommend a book but this book is pretty good, for the title you my think what the heck is this all about. well I purchase this book and I do not regret it, is down to earth and what they are actually telling you is really good. If you like to race any sport, I would definitely recommend it.
