I absolutely loved Pemmican Wars, the first book in the A Girl Called Echo series. I am thrilled to be saying that Red River Resistance has absolutely lived up to my expectations.Katherena Vermette has woven a beautiful story that blends together the everyday life of a lonely teenage Métis girl in Manitoba with the history of the Métis in that area. Echo is an incredibly relatable character that I think many teens would see themselves in. I moved around a lot as a teen and dealt with a lot of depression, with music and reading serving as my primary comforts, so Echo reminds me a lot of my teenage self. The historical aspects are fascinating. It is painful and important seeing Echo come to terms with the history of the Métis, and too realistic to see her going into it without knowing very much. These stories highlight gaps in my own knowledge that make me feel eager to learn. The information in this volume is a little better known than the information in the first volume, but genuinely not by much. There is so much to learn still, so I look forward to seeing what events the next volume will focus on.Scott B. Henderson is a talented artist, and I have enjoyed a number of other books featuring his work. This is no exception, his work in A Girl Called Echo continues to be impressive. I think part of why I connect this story mentally to 7 Generations is because he did the art for both (although both stories also have a contemporary and historical focus and were published by HighWater Press, so it makes sense either way). I always prefer Henderson's work when it's coloured, and Donovan Yaciuk's colouring works incredibly well here, and it helps to bring the story to life.I appreciated the historical timeline and the Métis List of Rights included in the back. I personally always enjoy reading any additional real-world facts in the back of any of my historical fiction readings.I am incredibly eager to see where else this story goes, and I look forward to seeing a third volume in the future. I hope to read more from all of the creators involved in this series. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys any kind of blend of contemporary and historical story. Despite the more than a 100 years since the events, Echo - a descendent of some of the original inhabitants - still struggles with her identity and place in the world, and the effects of a corrupt government that cared nothing for the people it displaced, only for the monetary value of their lands.The illustrations in this book suit the story perfectly. They have an overall blue/gray cast that lends itself to the mood, and there are very few words even for a graphic novel. For the subject matter, it really works. Again, this was because I hadn't read the first book and didn't have the background, so this is entirely an issue to do with me jumping in mid-series.The timeline at the very end of the graphic novel is the most illuminating, as it has a clear chain of events that lead to the Red River Resistance, the groups involved, the different motivations, the Métis List of Rights, and the creation of Manitoba as Canada's fifth province—and who wins, who loses, and who lived to tell their stories (and finally learning the the stories of the marginalized).I enjoyed the LGBTQIA+ rep, and especially the #ownvoices Aboriginal rep.Definitely a good read to get a basic understanding of Manitoban history, and the history of Aboriginal Canadians.I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. I am so pleased to be finding so many new comics and graphic novels by Indigenous creators, and the fact that is title focuses on Métis history is fantastic!This title is the second in a series about a young Métis girl, Echo, who finds herself in some sort of foster care. While there she is attending high school and "experiencing" the history of the past, most notably the events surrounding the controversial and tumultuous Red River resistance.I did read the first volume of this series, and I was very excited about this next instalment. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I think my main problem is that this seems to be focusing on telling the story of the Red River resistance very quickly, but in doing so, it has forgotten to develop the characters. It also takes it for granted that you have some background in this history.Sadly, this means that the characters are little more than shells. Even the main character, Echo has less than a personality. I feel like she was beginning to be explored in the first volume, but her personality just fell flat in this one. There is so much more that could be done with this story without exaggerating or undermining the important history that is being explored. I wanted so much more!Because of this, I feel like it'll lose some of its audience. This comes off more as an educational work, and less as a something to pick up for pleasure. However, as an educational work it is invaluable, and would do very well to be included as supplemental material in Canadian elementary and high school classrooms. Gr 9 Up–This volume continues the story of Nitori Shuichi, a girl who wants to be a boy named Takatsuki Yoshino, and the friends and rivals who enhance and complicate their lives. The characters are reintroduced in the opening pages (in “The Wandering Son Board Game”), which are illustrated in color. This story intersperses the real-life drama taking place between the youngsters at home and in the classroom with the stories that Shu writes in which he imagines himself as a “tragic heroine.” The story is filled with mixed signals, rumors, unrequited love, boys and girls fighting over one another, and love-hate relationships. Add to this the gender confusion felt by the main characters, and the romantic tensions become even more complicated. And as the characters get ready to enter middle school, with its gender-specific uniforms, each one is being pushed to conform to society's standards. The illustrations are mostly done in a straightforward manga style, but periodically scenes are suddenly elevated to a cinematic level with dramatically faded backgrounds. Tatako's artwork definitely enhances the story, with the black-and-white pages conveying even more emotion and power than the color illustrations. Even though these books focus on middle-grade students, the story is told in such a thoughtful and mature way, featuring lots of interior monologues and character exploration, that will go over the heads that audience. I love the way this series tackles gender and sexuality. It contains a lot of heavy topics but is not bogged down by angst and dread. You feel for the characters and want them to succeed! I waited over a year for this to be released in print for English and I'm glad I stuck it out. The book has an endearing drawing style that doesn't over complicate anything. I recommend the series to preteen and up.The hardcovers are gorgeous and look great on the shelf though they are taller than most average sized manga.

This volume continues the great story of the series thus far. I do think of this volume as being a slight step down from the great volume 3. The story slows down a bit from the great pace of the previous volume. I would also note that this volume somehow had a few quality issues with the translation. The biggest of those issues is that Suehiro Anna is referred to as Hirosue Anna for the first 40 pages or so of the book, but thereafter her surname appears correctly as Suehiro. This is a bit of a shame as Fantagraphics' releases for this series had been of impeccable quality so far. Even with these minor issues, however, this volume still packs a very good story and is very enjoyable.

Giving is not a panacea. Giving doesn't guarantee riches. Using the scientific method, Smith and Davidson, demonstrate factually what great thinkers have understood as truth for thousands of years. It is a fascinating study in what could be considered self destructive behavior as so many of us remain ungenerous. It is also a fascinating study in guiding principles that transcend time, religion, and philosophy of the power of giving.Even before this book, I've always talked with Scouts who take Personal Management about their understanding of giving (Requirement 3.g.). This book will add insight and weight to the perennial challenge I issue to Scouts to give and prove what has been taught throughout humanity's existence about giving. While there are not too many things I really expect Scouts to remember from merit badges, even one as important as Personal Management, this notion of consciously practicing giving is something I hope they do. The empirical evidence presented in the book is structured in a way that is compelling to help make it unforgettable.They show that all things being equal, those that give are relatively better off than their peers who do not. This holds true across economic quintiles as well as across the spectrum of health conditions. Two people in the same quintile, and of relatively similar health situations will be happy based on the degree of giving to which they commit. This doesn't negate ambition, or a realistic understanding of one's state, it simply emphasizes how giving establishes our connections as humans leading to the blessedness and intrinsic joy that comes from giving of both resources and time. One point they make, is that by committing to the act of giving first, a conscious effort to more effectively manage the remainder takes place and this is in evidence in the research. The evidence is that those who give tend to have better control over their finances and time than those who do not.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this topic as a student of life, Scout leaders who teach Personal Management Merit Badge, and to church leaders seeking to engage a deeper understanding of these principles in their congregations.

This is a seriously researched and scholarly book that is neverthless easy to read because the text is aimed at the general reader, while the supporting detail is in the thorough endnotes.As a practicing Buddhist, I was taught that generosity is the easiest of the great virtues because it is self-rewarding, that is, it makes you feel good when you do it. This book reports on extensive reasearch that shows that there are many provable benefits to generosity, some of them unexpected (generous people better understand and control their finances than ungenerous).Although the book is lengthy and stuffed with facts, it is not hard to keep reading. It is positive and uplifting, making the reader feel that humanity has a core decency that may not always manifest, but has positive effects when it does.I would highly recommend this book not only to those who are interested in human motivation and neuroscience, but also to persons like fundraisers for charitable organizations.

You'd be surprised at how little you know as to why and who (even yourself) give. (hint-most do NOT do it take advantage of saving on taxes). It's far deeper.

Great book with sound and actionable advice on relationship-building for donors (fundraising) and volunteers.

Interesting studies of those who give (of themselves and of their money) and those who don't. Great fodder for discussions and thought.
