"A real development ‘Bible.’ An entertaining and extremely informative read that provides a practical insider’s perspective of the entertainment industry. It will appeal to both entertainment business and creative hopefuls as well as seasoned professionals." ―Amy Sauertieg, M.A., Lecturer in Communications, Penn State University, USA "Too many of those studying to enter the film and TV industries with ambitions to express themselves creatively―as writers or directors―fail to appreciate the complexity and significance of the content acquisition and distribution business and how much influence is exerted through this buyer’s market. For them, Kirkpatrick’s book should be mandatory reading." ―Stephen Gordon, Program Leader, BSc (Hons) Film Production Technology, Birmingham City University, UK "Understanding the principles behind the distribution of film and TV within the industry is crucial in preparing our own content for the world. Scott's book breaks down this complex business and makes it both simple, and relevant to producers like ourselves. A must-have for any content producer." ―Noah and Brigham Sunday, Co-Founders of StoryBox Studios "The Pulitzer Prize-winner E.O. Wilson once wrote, ‘We are drowning in information while starving for wisdom.’ The same could be said for filmmakers who are ‘drowning in the production of content while starving for answers on how to distribute their content effectively.’ Kirkpatrick’s book provides this much-needed wisdom." ―Scott McMahon, Founder of Film Trooper Podcast; Author of How to Make and Sell Your Film Online and Survive the Hollywood Implosion While Doing It "Media distribution is the piece of the puzzle that separates Hollywood players from Hollywood wannabes. I am in awe of Scott Kirkpatrick's deep understanding of the content market and his ability to snap it all into place." ―John Ott, makingthemovie.com "Many filmmakers mistakenly rush to market without having a solid plan for distribution. This book provides the necessary foundation for how distribution works, so you can avoid common pitfalls and improve the chances for ROI. It is a recommended read for any filmmaker who wants to ‘level up’ their career." ―Jason Brubaker, Film Distribution Executive, Founder of Filmmaking Stuff

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (Book 4), by J. K. Rowling

Amazon.com Review

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J.K. Rowling offers up equal parts danger and delight--and any number of dragons, house-elves, and death-defying challenges. Now 14, her orphan hero has only two more weeks with his Muggle relatives before returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Yet one night a vision harrowing enough to make his lightning-bolt-shaped scar burn has Harry on edge and contacting his godfather-in-hiding, Sirius Black. Happily, the prospect of attending the season's premier sporting event, the Quidditch World Cup, is enough to make Harry momentarily forget that Lord Voldemort and his sinister familiars--the Death Eaters--are out for murder. Readers, we will cast a giant invisibility cloak over any more plot and reveal only that You-Know-Who is very much after Harry and that this year there will be no Quidditch matches between Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Instead, Hogwarts will vie with two other magicians' schools, the stylish Beauxbatons and the icy Durmstrang, in a Triwizard Tournament. Those chosen to compete will undergo three supreme tests. Could Harry be one of the lucky contenders? But Quidditch buffs need not go into mourning: we get our share of this great game at the World Cup. Attempting to go incognito as Muggles, 100,000 witches and wizards converge on a "nice deserted moor." As ever, Rowling magicks up the details that make her world so vivid, and so comic. Several spectators' tents, for instance, are entirely unquotidian. One is a minipalace, complete with live peacocks; another has three floors and multiple turrets. And the sports paraphernalia on offer includes rosettes "squealing the names of the players" as well as "tiny models of Firebolts that really flew, and collectible figures of famous players, which strolled across the palm of your hand, preening themselves." Needless to say, the two teams are decidedly different, down to their mascots. Bulgaria is supported by the beautiful veela, who instantly enchant everyone--including Ireland's supporters--over to their side. Until, that is, thousands of tiny cheerleaders engage in some pyrotechnics of their own: "The leprechauns had risen into the air again, and this time, they formed a giant hand, which was making a very rude sign indeed at the veela across the field." Long before her fourth installment appeared, Rowling warned that it would be darker, and it's true that every exhilaration is equaled by a moment that has us fearing for Harry's life, the book's emotions running as deep as its dangers. Along the way, though, she conjures up such new characters as Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, a Dark Wizard catcher who may or may not be getting paranoid in his old age, and Rita Skeeter, who beetles around Hogwarts in search of stories. (This Daily Prophet scoop artist has a Quick-Quotes Quill that turns even the most innocent assertion into tabloid innuendo.) And at her bedazzling close, Rowling leaves several plot strands open, awaiting book 5. This fan is ready to wager that the author herself is part veela--her pen her wand, her commitment to her world complete. (Ages 9 and older) --Kerry Fried

From Publishers Weekly

Even without the unprecedented media attention and popularity her magical series has attracted, it would seem too much to hope that Rowling could sustain the brilliance and wit of her first three novels. Astonishingly, Rowling seems to have the spell-casting powers she assigns her characters: this fourth volume might be her most thrilling yet. The novel opens as a confused Muggle overhears Lord Voldemort and his henchman, Wormtail (the escapee from book three, Azkaban) discussing a murder and plotting more deaths (and invoking Harry Potter's name); clues suggest that Voldemort and Wormtail's location will prove highly significant. From here it takes a while (perhaps slightly too long a while) for Harry and his friends to get back to the Hogwarts school, where Rowling is on surest footing. Headmaster Dumbledore appalls everyone by declaring that Quidditch competition has been canceled for the year; then he makes the exciting announcement that the Triwizard Tournament is to be held after a cessation of many hundred years (it was discontinued, he explains, because the death toll mounted so high). One representative from each of the three largest wizardry schools of Europe (sinister Durmstrang, luxurious Beauxbatons and Hogwarts) are to be chosen by the Goblet of Fire; because of the mortal dangers, Dumbledore casts a spell that allows only students who are at least 17 to drop their names into the Goblet. Thus no one foresees that the Goblet will announce a fourth candidate: Harry. Who has put his name into the Goblet, and how is his participation in the tournament linked, as it surely must be, to Voldemort's newest plot? The details are as ingenious and original as ever, and somehow (for catching readers off-guard must certainly get more difficult with each successive volume) Rowling plants the red herrings, the artful clues and tricky surprises that disarm the most attentive audience. A climax even more spectacular than that of Azkaban will leave readers breathless. The muscle-building heft of this volume notwithstanding, the clamor for book five will begin as soon as readers finish installment four. All ages. SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences. The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.A couple of things to note:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I think this is my third reading of the Harry Potter series. The first time is a precious memory to me. Our four children would all climb into our king size bed before bedtime and we would read one or two chapters each evening. We homeschooled so, as each child's reading progressed, they read a part too. Their mom died. They're in late 20s now. Five grandkids. Those will be ready to read to before we know it. But life is not always neatly packaged. I married a widow and moved us all. Today they are off to their own lives. My four and I are scattered across four states and even overseas. So, I'm reading to myself now. I can't make a stronger recommendation than to say that I immediately purchased "The Order Of The Phoenix" after finishing this one. I also have the set in hardbound on the bookshelf beside me. But Kindle is just too convenient. *smile*

My husband tried to surprise me with this order, but we share the amazon account ;)I WAS surprised though, because I didn’t realize it would be textbook size with all these amazing scenes drawn out. They’re AH-MAY-ZING drawings!! If you love Harry Potter, you will love these books. For some reason, hubs couldn’t find the first and second of the series (I did ;p) so he bought the third first, but we know the stories by heart so it doesn’t matter to me. I hope they put out all of them! It almost feels like how I felt waiting for the actual series to come out.

This review is for the Kindle in Motion version of this book. What a delight it has been so far reading this version. The animated artwork is a wonderful addition and it really helps with the visuals in your head. There is a hardcover version of this exact book with the same artwork available. But for the price of $9.99, I think this Kindle in Motion version is well worth it. The hardcover version certainty would be a nice addition to any collection, but this Kindle version with its animations is really something special. Almost like reading the Daily Profit with its moving pictures. I really hope Kindle in Motion continues with the other books in the series as they are very fun to read. All in all, I highly recommend this specific Kindle version. Really, if you're going to shell out $8.00 anyway for the regular Kindle version, why not just go ahead and get this one. Its so much better for just a few dollars more.

I would have given this book a 5 star review if the author bothered to include an overall map for each of the sections. Great descriptions of trails, good general info, but what a pain in the neck to use for someone who has no idea how much of a driving distance it is between various trailheads for routes described here. So, as we are planning a week long camping trip, planning to split the time between 2 campgrounds, each of those with convenient access to moderate to challenging routes, I have to stare at the trail map, try to figure out the nearest road on the map, locate it in google earth, pin it, then go back to the book, get the next interesting route 'nearby', repeat and so on. We want to do lots of hiking and little driving - especially considering the recommendation to leave very early and turn around by 11.30. Thank god the campground book has a general map - overlaying that one over my google earth creation is relatively simple.Bottom line - if you live in Colorado, you should have no problem using this book. But if you are coming from elsewhere, get ready for lots of map research - more than necessary!

great detail

This book gives very good descriptions of hikes and parks which we found useful. One very big gripe though. We drove from the Nashville area to Colorado for one of those big trip-of-a-lifetime trips, pulled the camper and wrangled the dog all the way out there. Did our homework and planned the trip to a tee. It all came off great until we got to Roxborough State Park, right outside of Littleton, which this book describes as allowing dogs on leash. When we tried to enter the park, they turned us away because we have a dog. When we asked if we could enter and keep him in the truck, the answer was a big no. They said they had heard of this book and contacted the publisher, but it's still not corrected. They said the park has always had this rule. That's a big error for a travel book, especially one that describes destinations where travelers will tend to travel long distances to visit, and plan entire days (those precious few vacation days 1200 miles from home!) according to its guidance.Author and publisher deserve a black eye for this not being corrected yet. How many other errors are in this book? This is the only one we found, and this is the only park to which we referred in this particular book. Unfortunately I will not have the confidence to use this book in the future without doing thorough fact-checking, but I'd rather just buy another book.

an excellent, nearly thorough guide to hiking in Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver, Colorado Springs, southern Wyoming, and various points west. Apt is a superb writer and clearly a lover of nature rather than someone out to prove his ultra-fitness or mountaineering expertise -- a large number of the hikes are very modest outings suitable for young children or the elderly.Just one major criticism: some strange inclusions and exclusions for a book with Denver/Boulder in the title. A number of hikes in Steamboat Springs and Wyoming are included, for instance -- both are a very sizable drive from anywhere on the Colorado front range except perhaps Fort Collins. Yet some truly awesome and popular hikes much closer to Denver/Boulder are excluded: 4th of July trailhead hikes west of Boulder are an especially glaring omission, as some of the most spectacular hiking in the country originates there. (Perhaps Apt wants to keep that increasingly popular area as much of a secret as possible.) Another strange omission, given Apt's somewhat Fort Collins-centric approach, are any of the trails in the main part of State Forest west of Fort Collins: anything north of route 14.

I have a bookcase full of books on hiking in Colorado. But when I'm looking to choose a hike, this is the first book I grab out of my stuffed bookcase. Why? It has a lot of variety to it: nearby hikes and hikes a bit of a drive away; challenging hikes and easy hikes; popular hikes and those off the beaten trail a bit. The descriptions are perfect. You know what to expect before you get there (so you can select hikes that fit your companions' abilities) and the directions are easy to understand and follow. This is the best hiking book I've ever owned. That's why I've bought it as a gift for others. I highly recommend it.

I loved this book. The Afoot and Afield series is a great series, and this is one of the best books in the series. The author is obviously somebody who has spent many, many hours "afoot in the field," and this book is like having a happy, knowledgeable, easy to be with hiking companion. Well worth the price. Well worth picking up and keeping for many, many hours of hiking pleasure. I hike a lot, and this book has added depth and feeling and expertise to my outings. I really liked it. Appreciate its details and overviews. I can highly recommend it.

Most of the hikes listed are not in the Denver area. Very few county "open space" hikes, for example. So this is not the book to buy if you are looking for good hikes close in to Denver. There is a good selection of Boulder area hikes.

Alan Apt's latest trail guide makes a good armchair companion during the winter months. Being an avid hiker but over 70 years old, I'm sometimes asked to take other senior citizens on hikes and Apt's trail descriptions have already given me a half dozen new destinations. Clear writing, excellent details and a little touch of humor now and then make this a favorite of mine for evening browsing and wishing.

Peter Megargee Brown's delightful collection of tips on questioning for the litigating attorney should be almost as much fun for the layman. It is full of wit and wisdom and shrewd insights, and the chapters read like short plays. --Louis Auchincloss

This book should be required reading for all trial advocates. It reveals, step by step, how both lawyers and non-lawyers can ask the right question and to get the answer they want. Effective inquiry, Mr Brown concludes, is a skill that can be learned to gain success in almost every line of endeavour. The key to the teaching of this art of questioning was the deep study of the various techniques employed by those professional masters who spent their lifetime developing incisive, searching questions for their law cases. As Sir Francis Bacon said, "A prudent question is one half of wisdom". Keep in mind that all questions need not be dead serious. We deserve some fun in life. Try to formulate and, if you can, write down your question. Keep it short and hone your inquiry. Leave out elliptical clauses, qualifying phrases, asides, irrelevancies, jokes and historical quotes and references. Go for the jugular. At the least, review your question two or three times in your head, including your emphasis. Cross-examination is the keenest test of truth and more penetrating than an affidavit. Emory R Buckner, a noted advocate, emphasized that preparation (or getting all the relevant facts before the start of the contest) was the trial's single most important event. Stated in its barest terms, Mr Brown's thesis is that if the witness hasn't hurt you, don't cross-examine. If you do cross-examine, have a specific objective in mind - prepare thoroughly to achieve your objective, and once you have accomplished it, sit down. Digest this book and your advocacy skills will increase dramatically.

As a student of the art of advocacy, I had read several articles or columns by the author. I ordered this without knowing quite what I'd get. I think that Peter Megaree Brown passes along a lot of solid advice. But whether one agrees with all of his maxims or not, Mr. Brown's storytelling is enchanting and his observations illuminating. The author recounts, among many other first-hand experiences, that when he was a young law clerk, Learned Hand used to come downstairs periodically to share with the law clerks his thoughts about successful advocacy. Hearing Judge Hand's observations from one who absorbed and applied them is, by itself, pretty much worth the relatively modest price of admission.

Half the book was giving credit to some case that someone won rather than being informative as to method of questioning. The information for learning that was for learning could have been contained in a pamphlet, unless you were wanting a history lesson.

This book presents anecdotal stories to make a point. But it fails to show how things ought to be done. Stated differently, it is a series of war stories, quite similar to Francis Wellman's The Art of Cross Examination. I would recommend Your Witness, advice given by 50 top Chicago lawyers, edited by Steven F. Molo and James R. Figliulo, and MacCarthy on Cross-Examination, by Terence F. MacCarthy.

Excellent

its ok

This is a nice little refresher handbook to have around at the law office. As with most books aimed at the legal profession, it's way overpriced. I'm not sure when I purchased this 1987 publication, but it had to be 1994 or 95 and I know it wasn't $18.95 then. Since reading it 20 years ago, I've gone to it probably 2 or 3 times for 2 or 3 minutes each time. Were this $5.95, I'd heartily give it 5 stars. But at $18.95(!), no way can I give more than 3.

Quite a short book, but with lots of thumbnail sketches of little maneuvers in law cases. It's not as good as one might wish for ascertaining useful techniques of cross-examination, but it is a subtle book, pointing out things that might not be naturally noted when dealing with a hostile (or defensive) person. My interest in this book originated with my criminal-defense lawyer brother, but since I am a philosopher, I have to argue with hostile students everyday. Thus, I could use some useful pointers on fruitful and effective questioning. I get the feeling this is a little book that should be reviewed every once in a while as a review of effective questioning. Definitely worth the price, and an easy read too.

Do you have the old edition? Are you considering whether or not to get the 10th anniversary edition? I initially vacillated back and forth, trying to decide whether or not to do it. I generally don't like wasting money, and try to avoid unnecessary repurchasing of things I already have. Ultimately, obviously, I did get the new edition, and was very glad I did so.Let's take a step back and say that the cookbooks of Isa Chandra Moskowitz, a number of which were co-written with Terry Hope Romero, changed my life. I've been a vegetarian/vegan for a while, and I've owned different of vegetarian/vegan cookbooks, and I've always cooked, but something about Ida and Terry's stuff is on a whole other level. It's like the apex of the form. The book Isa Does It was the first cookbook I owned where I just went through and cooked almost everything, one after another. The results always seemed to range from "Unbelieveably Good" to "Really, Really Good." I love the diversity of the recipes, including curries, nori roles, pies, pizzas, tofu/tempeh/seitan creations, comfort foods to fancy stuff, quick and easy meals to more involved. And the books are charmingly written, the attitude best described as punk, urban, DYI, and funny, and I appreciate that this attitude was never entirely lost/abandoned as time went on and mainstream acceptance must have been a lure. After finding their work, I started cooking a whole lot more, and now I'd say that cooking is a bit of a hobby. If I had the energy, I'd cook every night. Their cookbooks were instrumental in that development. The new edition is gorgeous. It's a nice, sturdy hardcover without a slip cover. The cover illustration looks great -- an ornate V immersed in various growy green things, all in different shades of green. The front and rear cover is glossy, and the inside pages are of a higher quality than before. The formatting has been changed; in essence, the new edition looks very similar to Isa Does It and The Superfun Times Vegan Holidary Cookbook, which makes sense because the copyright page says that the book was designed by Laura Palese, who, as it turns out, also designed Isa Does It and Superfun Times. Most recipes now occupy their own page. The recipes themselves are easy to read and are well organized, and include mini-intros, notes, tips, and icons. It looks like some of the recipe's mini-intros have been revised. The Amazon blurb claims that 250 recipes have been revised, and the text now includes 25 new recipes. There's new intros written by both the authors, but it still includes the old one. And there's the addition of photographs, which, frankly, adds a lot. I'm not sure if they were also taken by Vanessa Rees or Joshua Foo, who worked on Isa Does It and Superfun Time (for some reason I couldn't find the photograph attributions in this new edition), but they are similar in style and are beautiful. My only gripe (if you can even call it that), is that I prefer cookbook bindings/spines that are designed to lay flat. Isa Does It has this type of binding/spine, but Superfun Times and the Veganomicon doesn't either. It's nice when you don't have to put a stack of CDs or whatever on the corner to try to keep it down, etc. But the old edition didn't have it either, and it's be no means a deal breaker.I highly recommend this new edition. If you are new to Ida/Terry and don't have the old edition, this is the one to get of the two. If you have the old edition and are considering getting the new one, do it. It isn't essential to switch, I mean, you will survive just fine with the old one, but the changes are aesthetically and content-lly substantial enough to justify a new purchase, as it feels like an entirely new book. Some call this The Joy of Vegan Cooking. Well, this essential tome just got even more essential-er.

I received this today, and have to admit I was surprised to see a 4 star review. This is a beautiful cookbook with loads of information and updated recipes. Realize there were no kale recipes in the original and this flaw has been fixed thoroughly. If you have other Isa cookbooks, you will see a few similar recipes, but most of these are fabulous and I can't wait to try them. Because I have allergies, I always have to alter the recipes slightly, but I can tell you that bones of every recipe I've ever tried of these authors stands up to the indiginities my allergies cause! They teach enough here to allow anyone from a novice to an expert to learn how to prepare wonderful, nutritious food that will stun and amaze your vegan and nonvegan friends. I will be taking a few of these dishes to a vegan potluck at the end of the month, and I know I don't even have to try them first! Isa and Terry have convinced from their other books that they are great and inventive cooks who have mastered the art of vegan cooking. I looked at the original ten years ago and it looked too complicated. This one is not at all intimidating and is a joy to hold in my hands.

Minor changes. Appreciate addition of color photos, not sure if it was worth expense of re-purchasing.

I bought this book as a gift for a colleague, but was so captivated that I bought other copies for my self and family members! The photos are enticing and the recipes themselves are divine! Isa's wit and commentary is the icing on the cake, pun intended! This book and the How Not to Die cookbook (by Dr. Michael Greger) are the only two cookbooks anyone would need!

Mostly good recipes, but also some poor ones. Initially I thought the book was excellent - thick paper, good pictures, etc.. One problem is that the binding is terrible and I’m quickly ending up with lots of loose pages. Another problem is that the type on the ingredients lists are so small that the fractions require a magnifying glass to distinguish, for example, between 1/3 and 1/2. So, 4 stars for the contents and 1 star for the binding and printing.

I already owned the first edition of Veganomicon and decided to get this anniversary edition so that I could keep my first edition in our vacation home, and I love this anniversary edition. The photos and the way they edited the overall book is fantastic and if you don't have the first edition I highly recommend you get the anniversary edition, this is a must have for Vegan cooking, or even if you aren't Vegan and want to eat more vegetables and less meat.

We checked this out from our public library and after looking at it for one day, had to order it. We now use this book every day! Thank you!

I am a horrible cook, which can be a problem for a vegetarian. It’s probably even harder for one trying to be vegan. This book not only gives you recipes but also teaches you how to cook. I have made 3 dishes in this book for my, meat eating, family and they enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not turning my, meat eating, family vegan but a couple days of good vegan food a week, not bad.

I have spent years paging through Service books in order to follow the Service for the Salutations to the Virgin Mary on Fridays during Lent. Imagine how pleased I was to follow the Service yesterday with a minimum of page-flipping!The Greek text was identical to the one I heard chanted and the English translation was spot on. The font used in the printing was pleasing to the eye, the paper quality was excellent and the hard-bound cover sturdy. This is an excellent investment for your library. You will get much use from it.

I did not know that I even order it then tried to cancel or return it not an easy task. Thought I return it I have not read a book in my life. I can`t read good & fall a sleep.

This is a great book, it can be essential for the professional journalist or broadcaster and eye-opening for the general reader at the same time. What is it? A deeply focussed look at the use of hidden cameras and secret filming, both as a practical guide for those who need to do it and a broader look at the ethics and techniques involved. This is a relatively short review. The book doesn’t need deep consideration. It is well-written and informative, providing a unique window on the world that may be closed for many. In a relatively short time the whole “secret filming world” has changed. Blink and literally you can miss a hidden camera today and the technology is continuously changing and improving. The author knows his stuff, working for the BBC on a current affairs programme and he has become a bit of a guru within this area. It all makes for an interesting read, mixing practical advice and real-world stories of hidden filming. Hidden filming can have a valid role to play within journalism. It can also have its place within law enforcement and even securing your own evidence to support suspicions or allegations of wrongdoing by others, such as a rogue plumber or carer. With this ability to record comes responsibilities and this book will help you make a hidden recording and hopefully not fall foul of the law in the process. For those who may need this knowledge professionally it is a veritable goldmine at a great, low price. For the rest of us, it is just a fascinating peek into a possibly unknown world.

This is a disconcerting book. The title suggests that this could be a book about how the public is being spied upon and how little privacy is left after security-conscious institutions and governments have sprayed ‘terrorism’ all over the media on a daily basis. Although there is some discussion on the moral aspect of secret filming – there is a chapter entitled, ‘Do You Really Have To?’ – this book is mainly about what cameras to use, and how to use them when secretly filming your subject. This is a book that will most interest private detectives, whistle-blowers, desperate people, and perverts. Neither is it a book that informs us about what institutions and governments do so far as secret filming is concerned. Nonetheless, it is a serious book by an accomplished expert in the field of covert filming. Secret filming has yielded many positive results, as Plomin tells us, in areas whether children and invalid patients are concerned, but if one were to start asking whether he needs to do some secret filming because some crime is suspected but cannot yet be proved, going to the police may be the better option. The moral aspects of secret filming require a deeper and more expansive discussion than can be found in this book.

I'd recommend this, although some chapters are more useful than others. Helps me in raising my 13 and 10 yr. old sons. Also as a scoutmaster of 12-13 yr olds. Their wild, but will mellow out, just help them through it, don't try to fix everything at this stage. Didn't need the graphic depictions of sexual acts, etc. however. Also didn't need a whole chapter on how violent media makes kids violent, etc. Also, consider the author, you will get scriptures and some good southern gospel preaching sprinkled throughout, probably an average of a paragraph per chapter, but it's tastefully done. As a LDS Christian, it didn't bother me at all, just a heads up.

I only got this because someone at work recommended it. This book completely turned me off within the first few pages. The author spent way too much time talking about why everyone else is wrong, supposedly in order to set the stage for why he is the only one who is right and everyone who disagrees is useless. There can be valuable concepts and ideas taken from multiple schools of thought.Maybe it gets better and has some useful ideas but I couldn't tolerate it enough to get past the first few pages.

The book tells details of many studies and gives statistics on boys - crime rates, probability of drug use etc. but doesn't give much practical advice on how patents can better raise their sons in two parent, christian homes. The advice toward other homes is the more obvious of having a relationship with God, having more stability and focus on children etc. I was disappointed that more in depth advice was not given. We already spend time with our children and try to have meals with them for example. But I do agree with Dobson's point of view on most issues addressed, hence the high rating.

Wish I’d known this book was so anti-progress before buying. Returning after 30 pages read as I don’t want a cent of my money going towards this guy and his discriminatory leanings, even $6 of my money.

James Dobson’s convictions die the death of a thousand qualifications in this book. He’s much easier to read when he’s talking about God and not quoting fluffy pop psychology. Unfortunately this book is mostly fluffy pop psychology.

Really enjoying this book. I have so far found it informative and helpful. I’m glad I made this purchase.

Get book on parenting boys.

I had very high hopes for this book, but I didn't find it helpful at all. Very disappointing.

Amazon.com Review

One would not anticipate a conventional memoir from Bob Dylan--indeed, one would not have foreseen an autobiography at all from the pen of the notoriously private legend. What Chronicles: Volume 1 delivers is an odd but ultimately illuminating memoir that is as impulsive, eccentric, and inspired as Dylan's greatest music. Eschewing chronology and skipping over most of the "highlights" that his many biographers have assigned him, Dylan drifts and rambles through his tale, amplifying a series of major and minor epiphanies. If you're interested in a behind-the-scenes look at his encounters with the Beatles, look elsewhere. Dylan describes the sensation of hearing the group's "Do You Want to Know a Secret" on the radio, but devotes far more ink to a Louisiana shopkeeper named Sun Pie, who tells him, "I think all the good in the world might already been done" and sells him a World's Greatest Grandpa bumper sticker. Dylan certainly sticks to his own agenda--a newspaper article about journeymen heavyweights Jerry Quarry and Jimmy Ellis and soul singer Joe Tex's appearance on The Tonight Show inspire heartfelt musings, and yet the 1963 assassination of John Kennedy prompts nary a word from the era's greatest protest singer. For all the small revelations (it turns out he's been a big fan of Barry Goldwater, Mickey Rourke, and Ice-T), there are eye-opening disclosures, including his confession that a large portion of his recorded output was designed to alienate his audience and free him from the burden of being a "the voice of a generation." Off the beaten path as it is, Chronicles is nevertheless an astonishing achievement. As revelatory in its own way as Blonde on Blonde or Highway 61 Revisited, it provides ephemeral insights into the mind one of the most significant artistic voices of the 20th century while creating a completely new set of mysteries. --Steven Stolder

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. After a career of principled coyness, Dylan takes pains to outline the growth of his artistic conscience in this superb memoir. Writing in a language of cosmic hokum and street-smart phrasing, he lingers not on moments of success and celebrity, but on the crises of his intellectual development. He reconstructs, for example, an early moment in New York when he realized "that I would have to start believing in possibilities that I wouldnÂ’t have allowed before, that I had been closing my creativity down to a very narrow, controllable scale...that things had become too familiar and I might have to disorient myself." And he recounts how, in that search for larger reach, he actually went to the public libraryÂ’s microfilm archives to learn the rhetoric of Civil War newspapers. Skipping the years of his greatest records, or perhaps saving those years for the second volume of his chronicle, Dylan recalls the times when he was sick of his public persona and made more lackluster albums like "Self-Portrait" and "New Morning." He then skips again to his comeback work with producer Daniel Lanois in the late 1980s. Dylan emphasizes that he was "indifferent to wealth and love," and readers looking for private revelations will be disappointed. But others will prize the display of musical integrity and seriousness that is evident in his minutia-filled accounts of his influences in folk and blues. Ultimately, this book will stand as a record of a young manÂ’s self-education, as contagious in its frank excitement as the letters of John Keats and as sincere in its ramble as Jack KerouacÂ’s On the Road, to which Dylan frequently refers. A person of DylanÂ’s stature could have gotten away with far less; that he has been so thoughtful in the creation of this book is a measure of his talents, and a gift to his fans.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Chronicles Volume I by Bob DylanIt should come as no surprise to those who have listened to Bob Dylan's music, watched his elusive appearances, and followed his unforthcoming interviews, that Dylan often doesn't help you to understand who he is. In what purports to be the first volume of his autobiography, Dylan lets you know who he is and how he got there, but don't expect a straightforward narrative explanation. Just as in his songs and too infrequent appearances, he insists in this wonderful book that you do your work, too. If you do it, however, and are at least marginally aware of the details of his life, you will find this extended riff on Bob Dylan's early years in New York as well as his reflections on family, fame, recording, and more to be deeply informative and most satisfying. In Chronicles: Volume One (Simon & Schuster, 2004, 320 pages, $27.00/11.99)He arrives in New York on a cold winter day, alone with only his guitar for company, not knowing anybody, but curious and open to his own experience. He's searching for Woody Guthrie, even then hospitalized in New Jersey, whose muse has drawn him to folk singing and wandering. He finds his way into the Greenwich Village of the late fifties with only the folk songs he's studied and learned, his dogged persistence, and his intelligence, and then burrows himself in the folk music culture of this interesting period roiling with cultural change in America reflected in the musical and social life of The Village. He begins visiting and then performing at little hole-in-the-wall venues where, during the afternoons, anyone can take the stage to sing, recite poetry, or find their own mode of expression, working for tips. He keeps his eyes open, soon meeting people who welcome him to flop on their couches or mattresses in their apartments. He meets, and cultivates in his own elusive way, Dave Van Ronk, and many other artistic and music business lights in the Village.Dylan describes crashing with Ray Gooch, whose Village apartment was filled with books that he dived into. In an extended riff, Dylan writes about what he read, saw, studied, picked up, put down, returned to and groped through to gain understanding, all the time soaking up a world of literature, history, and art he had become ready to indulge in and integrate into his yearning and experience. He's a virtual vacuum cleaner for seemingly random ideas, musical, literary and artistic, which he slowly but surely integrates. In its own discursive way, Dylan's story emerges. He writes about how Bobby Zimmerman became Bob Dylan through an interesting search for a name reflecting the personna he was constructing for himself. It, like much of the rest of the book, makes sense in its own seemingly rambling way. He begins to change, as well, in his concept of himself as a singer, moving from traditional and contemporary folk music to what he refers to as “topical” songs, being careful to remove himself as a “protest” singer, but rather an observer of the contemporary scene. While the narrative seems to wander, it's actually pretty straightforward, laced with references to reading, listening, interacting with the music community and the world in thoughtful and insightful ways. While the book seems to jump around a good deal, it, nevertheless, captures the person I think Dylan, at least, wants to be. As his celebrity increases, his resistance to being made into something he thinks he's not does, too. He consistently styles himself as a folk singer finding songs in his experience and his internal self. He resists becoming a symbol for the fantasies of others seeking to make him into a symbol. He describes the harassment from “pilgrims” seeking him, along with his growing sense of needing privacy and solitude to do his work. Robbie Robertson, of the Band, asks him, “Where do you think you're gonna take it?” as if he were a single driving force behind music. Life seems to represent his resistance to being styled in some way by others. He writes, “It was impossible for me to observe anything without being observed,” exploring the cost of his celebrity on the family life and creative existence he says he wants to pursue and fulfill. I can find nothing in the narrative that points to his seeking celebrity, much less the iconic status he has achieved. His reactions to attending this year's Nobel Prize award ceremonies represent a consistent response from him, as does the graceful statement he sent in.I'm struck by the need Dylan expresses, which seems very real to me, to live an ordinary family life in the midst of everyone else's desire to turn him into a symbol for something much larger. In the end, Dylan remains a song writer and story tell of unusual grace and breadth. He experiments, as he writes, “throws everything at the wall,” and much of it seems to work for some audience beyond his desires to be a more solitary, family oriented, singer and writer of songs. For, first of all, he's a writer. But the more I listen to him, the more I find him to be a wonderfull, affecting, and honest singer. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Bob Dylan can write. And he can think and sing. What some people might find surprising is that he's a real person, filled with all that portends, yet driven by the external forces of fame and celebrity to become something more. While he doesn't seek sympathy, reading his Chronicles evoked it in me. I find myself liking the person who emerges while, as has become my habit with books by and about musicians, listening to his songs with increasing understanding and empathy. Chronicles gives the reader entree into the real person Bob Dylan is. But, and it's a big But, the reader has to allow him his reality. In that “But” lies the enormous strength and charm of this book. By the middle, I found myself wishing him the peace of a privacy so difficult for him to achieve.Dylan's description of a decade-long low period in his career, from the late seventies through the eighties he describes a sense of disconnection from his own work, his sense that his career was going nowhere, that he no longer wanted to perform...just going through the motions. Leaving a rehearsal for a tour with the Grateful Dead, he drops into an obscure San Francisco jazz joint, hears a singer simply killing it, and has a revelation which turns him around. During the following European tour with Tom Petty, he sings eighty long-neglected songs from his catalog without a repeat and senses new energy and inspiration. Again, taken at his word, it rings completely true to me. There's an integrity to the writing as he digs within to describe the indescribable. I've always thought of Dylan as being non-communicative except in performance, but Chronicles is a performance, too, a journey where he takes the risks of self-discovery and finds what he's looking for.His chapter called “Oh Mercy” referring to what has been described as his “comeback album,” discusses song writing and performance, giving huge insights into Dylan's process. How he thinks, jumps from idea to idea while a concept emerges. He resents other people's over-analyzing, but gives himself to the willing reader and consumer of his music. But it must be on his terms. He won't let you take over for him or force him into a mold. His account of the period spent working in New Orleans with producer Danny Lanois to produce Oh Mercy captures the spirit of trying to build a collaborative relationship as well as presenting an impressionistic view of the city and a motorcycle trip with his wife to bayou country that's a joy to read, an extended riff that also helps reveal Dylan's creative process.“Folk music was all I needed to exist. Trouble was, there wasn't enough of it. It was out of date, had no proper connection the the actualities, the trends of the times. It was a huge story, but hard to come across.” (235) Dylan refers to himself throughout the book as a folk singer, rejecting the critics and fans who would make him into a cultural icon, a leader of a movement, a poet who spoke for and to a generation. For this refusal, for his stubborn insistence to follow his own muse and music, he paid a price, and kept his integrity and at least some independence. Over the more than fifty year course of his career, he has continued to discover himself and his music, while never kowtowing to the rapidly changing world of pop music, but always being aware of what's going on, listening, watching, learning.Dylan was a voracious consumer of the work of other singers and, later, song writers. Soon after leaving home, he discovered Woody Guthrie, whose work consumed him and helped set his course, until he heard “Ramblin” Jack Elliot, who had traveled with Guthrie, and whose confident singing awed him. Throughout the book, Dylan, explores the influences, both musical and literary, influencing him as well as examining his own inner workings. The amount of careful thought and deep searching that went into thinking through this book should not be underestimated, either in depth or in carefully structured writing. For anyone interested in Bob Dylan Chronicles: Volume One (Simon & Schuster, 2004, 320 pages, $27.00/11.99) is must reading. I enjoyed it and learned a lot, too. I bought the book from Amazon and read it on my Kindle App. fd

I quite enjoyed Mr. Dylan's highly descriptive, stream-of-consciousness writing style and I liked the way he seemingly jumped away from telling the story of his early years to some random point in the future, but then he pulled it all back together at the end by traveling back to the beginning. Not being a literary critic or anything close to it and having read this book many years after its release, all I can add to the conversation is that like his music, you'll either like his autobiography or you'll be confounded by it. He certainly does elicit strong opinions either way, which are fun to read. I've started thinking of him as one of the 20th/21st century's greatest trolls who just starts fires everywhere and then sits back and laughs. Not that I think this autobiography is a troll, not at all. I find it to be beautifully and purposefully written. I do think that some sections are taken directly from journal entries made right at the time -- the meetings with Archibald Macleish are a good example, and the detailed notes on the studio sessions. These take on a more crisp, direct writing style than the free-flowing, poetic recalled memories of his time as a hungry young folksinger in Greenwich Village. If you're one of those people who are coming to him now because of the Nobel, this autobiography isn't a bad place to start, but do understand that it's not what won him that prize. To get to the bottom of that, you'd have to listen to 55 years of music.

Bob Dylan has been the subject of many biographies, but not until the publication of his first memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, in 2004, did curious fans receive any autobiographical disclosure from the bard himself. Rather than using the book as an opportunity to set the record straight, however, the most curious thing about Chronicles is how Dylan goes out of his way to write about everything but himself. Nevertheless, it’s a lively and literate book that does, however indirectly, provide much-longed-for insight into the thought process of this great musician and songwriter.Chronicles is not a typical autobiography, but rather an examination of five different points in Dylan’s life. These stages do not appear in chronological order, and in the telling of them Dylan often flashes backward and forward to other scenes that happen to pop into his head. Three of the chapters focus on his early career, up to the point where he signed with Columbia Records. Too often the text reads like a catalog of influences, with Dylan listing off the acts he admired, the records he listened to, the books he read, and the movies he saw. In these early scenes, however, he does a great job of authentically recreating the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the 1960s. He purposely avoids making himself the star of these vignettes but rather functions literally as a chronicler, capturing in eloquent and vivid prose the sights and sounds of afternoons in smoky coffee shops and nights on borrowed couches. The reader at times feels as if he were young Dylan, just arrived from Minnesota and hunting for a gig. When he’s writing about the actual making of music, however, he’s far less successful. In the chapter entitled “Oh Mercy,” about the recording of the album of the same name in 1989, he talks in-depth about a new vocal technique that revolutionized his performances and a mathematical method of guitar playing that likewise transformed his music, but what he has to say about these topics is largely unintelligible. As to the album itself, he really gets into the nuts and bolts about how each song was written and recorded, but once again he’s virtually incomprehensible because he strings together more strange, folksy metaphors than a parody of Dan Rather. One would expect such a brilliant poet to be more articulate when talking about his craft. In this respect, Dylan could learn a thing or two from Neil Young. Young’s autobiography Waging Heavy Peace jumps all over the map topically and chronologically, but you never have trouble understanding what he’s saying. With Dylan it seems like deliberate obfuscation, either because he’s too shy for self-revelation, or he simply wants to preserve some of his rock-star mystique. In the most candid portion of the book, which revolves around the recording of the 1970 album New Morning, Dylan expresses his reluctance to adopt the mantle of “voice of a generation” that was so often thrust upon his shoulders. All he wanted was to make music and be a family man. Another highlight of the book is the final chapter, in which he details his youth in Minnesota and explains how he went from a Woody Guthrie tribute act to a songwriter in his own right.Though Chronicles may not be the perfect autobiography Dylan aficionados have long waited for, there’s plenty of nourishment here to at least temporarily satiate hungry fans. Perhaps the most gratifying thing about Chronicles is its subtitle, Volume One, indicating there’s more to come.
