I originally purchased this book back in 1967, when it was first released, and I'm pleased to return it to my library shelves 4+ decades later. It is, of course, an extension of McLuhan's seminal work, "The Medium is The Message." From the first image (Good Morning!), revealing that already in 1967 it was possible to print a crisp, clean logo on an egg yolk — to its final image of earthrise from moon orbit space-cast from then-state-of-the-art NASA telemetry accompanied by A.N. Whitehead's statement that, "It is the business of the future to be dangerous," McLuhan's "Inventory of Effects" (the subtitle) is no mere quick-read, although its text is sparse in contrast to its prolific imagery. It is cram-full of eye-opening, mind-expanding visuals (yet all in black and white!) that are consciously arranged to deliver its reader to an epiphany of awareness and understanding about the nature of our perceptions of reality. It breathes visual life into concepts proposed just a few years later in Alvin Toffler's "Future Shock."

McLuhan presents to his readers a fascinating way to rethink how media has changed our lives, society and the way humans perceive our world. If I were a superior intellect obsessed with the effects of media who happened to indulge in mind-altering drugs and who enjoyed emulating the style of poetry slams, I might be able to create a work comparable to Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore's "The Medium is the Massage".Or at least I might have been able to enjoy it.Alas, none of the aforementioned qualities apply to me. And given the popularity of this book in academia, my intellect is apparently lower than even my nearly non-existent desire to attend a poetry slam. Clearly, I am not the intended audience.Who, then, is this book suited for? The answer to that is best given after taking a few moments to examine what the book is about and how it is presented. We must understand both what it is about and how it goes about being--and isn't being what it is (whatever it is) all about? (If that last sentence elicited a, "whoahhh...heavy dude..." response from you, you may be a part of the book's intended audience.)Let me start with how it is presented since you must be able to tolerate its appearance and taste if you are to consume its contents and benefit from the nutrition contained within. Consider the following excerpt:"Ours is a brand-new world of allatonceness. `Time' has ceased, `space' has vanished. We now live in a global village...a simultaneous happening. We are back in acoustic space. We have begun again to structure the primordial feeling, the tribal emotions.... (63)"I can imagine McLuhan on stage, wearing a beret, smoking a cigarette, holding a glass of pinot noir and speaking melodramatically into a microphone to a crowd of wine and coffee sippers. They applaud while I scratch my head and pray this place has tequila and transcripts of the show.That is not to say that the style of writing is bad. But it can become dissonance that obscures the message it is trying to convey. I would not dispute that Shakespeare's sonnets are poetic masterpieces, but if you try to use that style to educate me on the effects of mass media on society, I will likely become bewildered and remain uneducated. People who enjoy his sonnets, however, may be enthralled.The visual elements add the equivalent of more than four shots of espresso's worth of caffeine to the book and make it feel hyperactive and almost psychedelic. Black and white pictures are on nearly every page. The text varies in size from tiny to one letter being as tall as the page. Sentences may be black or white, upside down, diagonal or backwards. One page may have several paragraphs followed by one sentence that spans multiple pages.It is possible that his style is simply too rich and cultured for my peasant-born palate (or that it is meant to be read while listening to Pink Floyd and dropping acid--I did not try that approach, though). After all, many disagree with me. In his 2004 article "A Media Ecology Review", (Communication Research Trends: Vol. 23, No. 2, p.7), Lance Straite discusses how other works by McLuhan are "challenging" because of his writing style. However, he says that "The Medium is the Massage" is, "effective because it summarizes McLuhan's key concepts and shows as well as tells the reader what McLuhan is referring to... [and] remains a good introduction to McLuhan's approach."Those "key concepts" constitute the book's intellectual nutritional value--and there is a lot for your brain to absorb. While I found the style off-putting, I choked it down like a heaping bowl of spinach and beets (they're good for you!) and, after processing it, appreciate the book's content.The depth of the book is conveyed in the title. According to McLuhan's official website (maintained by his family), "The Medium is the Massage" was originally supposed to be "The Medium is the Message". When McLuhan saw the error, he told the printer to, "leave it alone! It's great and right on target!"McLuhan apparently loved wordplay (as can be seen in the book) and thought "massage" could be read in four different--yet relevant--ways: "message", "massage", "mess age" and "mass age".The core concept of the book is how the technology of media--the physical, sensual being of it, not the content it delivers--"massages" our behavior; how it pushes and pulls us. McLuhan is not concerned with what we see and hear when we watch T.V., listen to the radio or see a billboard but rather how the media--the channels by which the content is delivered--affect us.Few things illustrate this better than one concept he famously coined: "the global village". These particular readers are also not turned off by the style and do not struggle too much with the material.It is a 3-Star book for students like those above but who may struggle with the presentation and taste and may have to choke it down. However, digesting it can greatly strengthen their understanding of mass media. Class discussions and supplemental reading materials may be of great value to them.

This is the last follow on after Understanding Media and the Gutenberg Galaxy. Not really "necessary" to the "massage" the previous two books are the statement, but a nice.... item for visting about and a nice historical perspective on "how to change the message" before the massive changes brought about by the internet.

It was pretty good, well written but since it's covering mostly a peaceful time in the story this isn't anywhere near as exciting as the previous novels. Also once the action DID start things went a little too well for our party, I wouldn't say they "barely scrapped by" in this one, the main villain was dispatched with little fanfare. And for the most part the story was mostly about Goblin Slayer's dates with only the last 30 pages being about some "sinister plot", but this can also be taken a good thing since things were shaken up abit here, keep the story arcs from getting stale. One thing I WILL say tho is that the introduction of a overarching story was introduced in this chapter: things that tie into some of the previous arcs and lay the groundwork for future ones. Overall a good read, if you're a fan of these books I don't think you'll be disappointed!

I don't say this lightly but this just like the previous volumes is 10 stars out of 5. The writing is strong and of great quality up there with Shield Hero, Gate, Log Horizon, SAO, All You Need is Kill, RTW, Amber Sword and Mushoku Tensei. Only downside to Goblin Slayer is it's less elaborative and wordy but this in no way detracts from the novels.-Characters are consistent-Story is awesome, well written and extremely realistic in how things interact with one another-No asinine high school garbage-No brain dead, naive, lucky out the ass imbecile main character that extremely likely only through the sheer force of an armada of guardian angels to get out of childhood alive-No harem-Girls like the MC plausibly and with due cause-MC is still himself and single mindedAction wise this is a needed step down to show the more daily ongoings of things. Hopefully the next volume will have the same amount of action and some more alternate perspectives to build even further on the world and everyone in it. Up to now there is no fluff and plenty of space for elaboration of everything and anything. Can easily picture at the very very literal least five more novels without digression or degradation. If author slows the pace down and becomes more elaborative then easily even more novels.

This was more slice of life. A little in-depth about Guild Girl and Cow Girl and their thoughts about the Goblin Slayer, and how they care about his well-being. It's sweet but it's too bad Goblin Slayer will never reciprocate the feelings of any of female love interest.I felt the last part of the book, the action part, Goblin Slayer and crew had a 'too much' successful victory. No damage or hurt people in the frontier town. Everyone in town is none the wiser to what happened that night. Only found dead goblins the next day. No one asked what the hell happen or the aftermath of the assassination attempt.It's a good story, even I felt Goblin Slayer had a slight change. I hope in a future volume, High Elf takes Goblin Slayer to a fun adventure. Hope.

The first novel was a series of goblin slaying quests, and more practically, an introduction into the world. The second was a long quest, and read just like a TTRPG session would.This is a little different. It focuses most on character building, especially with side characters rather than the main cast. Essentially revolving around a harvest festival, Goblin Slayer does his thing as two girls attempt to date him - it's amusing, but not action-packed.I intend no harm with a 3-star rating, but if you came from the first and second novels expecting more TTRPG style questing, you won't find much here. Enjoyable for the unwavering fanbase (of which I am very much onboard with), but for a reader who wants a DnD story, or who came from the first two novels expecting more campaigning, volume 3 won't make your ends meet.

Absolutely terrible. If you liked the idea of Goblin Slayer and was looking forward to a story where it's about the main character and his experiences with slaying his personnel demons, don't buy this book. The series started off great, but now it's treading into generic harem trash route or where every character falls in love with the protagonist. It had a good concept, but the author wants to focus on the romantic aspects while shoehorning in only one goblin slaying. The author floats around these girls that fawn over him, and almost throughout the entire book focused on their perspective on him! Almost nothing on the main guy.

This was a decent addition to the series. It toned down the violence from the past two volumes and emphasized the importance of the relationships Goblin Slayer has developed as an adventurer. Although GS is meant to be a stoic hero who barely talks, I feel the series would really benefit from him vocalizing his feelings more. He does it a little in Vol. 3, but I feel this could have used more character development on Goblin Slayer's part.

I gotta say. The Water Toen Arc was surprisingly nice D&D romp.And to see Goblin Slayer rage mode the Goblin Champion was just awesome!Plus, the over the top and unorthodox solutions to Goblin Slayer's adventures are always fun to read!

Good story and plot. Really enjoy this sequel. Already got use to the lack of names, unfortunately it won't change but it rest a lot to the personality of the characters, making them generic. Also, the main character seems stagnant, doesn't evolve through the serie.

I have read a lot of books in search of guidance on successful cider making. And I have made a few batches of passable cider, always felt they could be better, but didn't know how to improve my crafting. There are a lot of books out there worth reading, but none have put all the pieces together, until now. Jolicoeur's book is the one I have searched for all these years!The author thoroughly details the steps to making great cider--everything from selecting the right apples, handling the apples properly, to the qualities to look for in a grinder and press. There is a wealth of information here--far more than you'll need for your first batch, but plenty to reward you for re-reading, and for improving each batch of cider you make. The author's research has clearly been exhaustive and there is a lot of personal experience underpinning the advice. There is also a lot of technical information in this book, mostly in the form of fermentation chemistry, but the book is organized in such a fashion that it is easy to breeze through the chemistry and focus on the practicalities of making cider (that said, the chemistry is important and something every eager maker should work through at least once).The author's writing style is quite approachable and conversational in tone.I am really grateful for this book! It arrived as I began gathering apples for this year's pressing. On my first glance through the book the author saved me from making three mistakes that would have compromised the quality of my cider. This encouraged me to slow down and get through the book before committing any more mistakes, and now I'm confident that this year's cider will be my best ever.One final note. The author developed a series of spreadsheets for managing cider production--from calibrating your hydrometer to calculating blends and tracking fermentation progress. These sheets and their use are discussed in the book, and available for download from the publisher. The spreadsheets alone are worth the price of the book!

Certainly comprehensive -- need to know what varieties of apples to grow in your orchard to make a perfect juice for cider? Here you go! But if you're just looking for an introductory-level guide to making homemade cider, this isn't a great start. Maybe I'll be ready for this in a few years...for now, the internet gives me better / faster advice regarding simple protocols for making cider.

Beautifully laid out and photographed, this book had everything I was looking for. The main thing I wanted was an informed discussion of the pros and cons of using sulfites in cider production. This book has the most technical and thorough discussion I've seen, even though the author himself admits to only using sulfites on a small proportion of the cider he produces...Most non-UK cider discussions I've seen all take it as a given that you will put sulfites or similar chemicals in the must in order to control fermentation...This book discusses the pros and cons in a non-divisive way, and explains (the basics) of the chemistry behind the practice.If you want to build a press there is a huge section with drawings and photos. And, there is a gorgeous section on varieties of apples, again including gorgeous photos of each type covered.Lastly, the book starts with the basics of making cider, end-to-end, but the remainder of the book then goes step-by-step through all aspects of the process. Great and gorgeous book.

I was well aware of Mssr. Jolicoeur's website before he delved into writing this most excellent volume. In an area of study where most of the scientific material is difficult to access, or long out-of-print, this hefty volume brings a rare fusion of science and common sense to the Cider afficionado. For someone who merely wants to dabble in converting their local farmer's market sweet cider into something more potent, this textbook-like tome may be intimidating. That said, it neither reads like a textbook, nor does it present a difficult scientific explanation for the aspects of the cider craft. Mssr. Jolicoeur is, if anything, a very down-to-earth cider maker and cider apple orchardist. His fluid and engaging style reflects that, while his suggestions for growing, equipment and production all reflect a "best practices, without excess" approach. However the book also contains a wealth of information on specific areas that have been a deep personal interest to Mssr. Jolicoeur. To wit, there is an extensive section on making your own grinding and pressing equipment that is unsurpassed by anything online or in print - anywhere. Overall this is the best guide out there for the dedicated hobbyist and small producer.The only proviso I would attach to my otherwise complete enthusiasm for this publication is that it has a certain regional focus. As an example, for those who might be looking for advice on what apple varieties to grow in the deep south there is little contained here. Mssr. Jolicoeur is clearly an expert in his climate area, a part of Quebec that corresponds to USDA (climate/growing region) Zone 4. He has also incorporated cultural information from colleagues in the Northeastern U.S., but none any further south than USDA zone 6. So the information on apple varieties, diseases and yields observed may be of little use to growers below the northern tier (such as myself in USDA Zone 8). Regardless, this information comprises a minority of the text and most of the well presented material is useful to everyone. With Claude Jolicoeur's book.....vous avez de la chance !

Item arrived as promised and is a typical Text book, I gave it 4 stars since It is not the best ethics text book I have seen and we have to supplement with lots of additional readings in class.

The content is not great but it was on the reading list for a class I am taking. Next time I might just try interlibrary loan. This is the first time I have ever purchased something from Amazon I was really unhappy with, just have not had time to check the return policy. The book itself is in poor condition, heavily defaced with very bright hot pink highliter to the point of being, for me, difficult to read.

Completely wrong book

Bought it to study for Nurse Practitioner board exam. It is ok but there are better resources and I sent it back unread after scanning it.

This is a reasonably well-written book, but if you are looking for a new or original take on the NHL's early years, you won't find it here. If you've already read a bit about professional hockey and were hoping to learn how the game, the league, and hockey's style of play have evolved over the first 50 years of the NHL's existence, you won't really find it here. What you will find are brief profiles of the great players, coaches, and executives who made up the league's first 50 years--greats such as Rocket Richard, Toe Blake, Gordie Howe, Stan Mikita, and Conn Smythe, to name just a few. These profiles are all lumped together into one chapter for each Original Six team, with the end result presumably being a picture of the NHL's first five decades of existence.Unfortunately, this approach doesn't provide much new information about the NHL's; rather, it's just a rehash of what's been published many other times in many other places--indeed, a lot of this information can be found on Wikipedia or at the 100 Greatest Player Profiles currently available on the NHL's website. It's quite frankly a lazy approach to covering the NHL's history--the easiest way to get a book out of the subject without having to do any original research. I was really hoping to learn more about how the game has evolved over the years, the style of play, the strategy and approach of NHL players--how did the league grow and change from 1917 until the first expansion of 1967? I'm sure it's quite a story, but it's not told in The Original Six.

I enjoyed this. I like that it gave a good overview of The Original Six teams and many of the most famous, inaugural, and game changing players of each team. It was a perfect place to start delving into the history of the sport, and overall I’m glad I picked it up.I wish it had been edited better because the format continuously changed and with all of the skipping around sometimes it was difficult to figure out who was being referred to. But other than that it had a lot of good information, and kept it as concise as possible.

Pretty disappointing effort. Contains many errors and is an overall disjointed summary of a marvelous and exciting era. A definitive,well written history of the Original Six still awaits its creation,

The Great Hunger of 1845-1852 was a devastating time for the Irish. The devastation caused by the famine was terrible - families torn apart, untold suffering, and many making their way to America. It is this famine that forms the backdrop of Nory Ryan's Song. Nory and her family have lived by Maidin Bay in Ireland for many generations. Their home is leased from the local English lord Cunningham, a cruel man with little regard for his tenants. His sole aim is to drive the tenants out so that he can have sheep grazing on the land. In this Cunningham is aided by his henchman Devlin who is merciless and ruthless in collecting rent owed on the homes.Nory's father has gone off fishing to earn enough money to pay the rent, and leaves behind Nory, her older sisters Maggie and Celia, younger brother Patch, and Granda. Life is incredibly hard, but Nory's gift of song and her family and friends keep her spirits high. Things take a turn for the worse when the potato crop goes bad. The disease causes all of the crops to fail, and leaves the people of Ireland wasting away from hunger. Nory's sister Maggie leaves for America with her new husband, and Nory dreams of joining them someday, a dream shared by other members of the family.The story focuses on Nory as the protagonist, of her feelings and struggles as she copes with the problem of surviving day-to-day and figuring out ways to find food or making whatever they find edible. Nory is a strong and selfless individual - she gives and gives, and gives some more. It is this great spark of humanity within Nory that attracts the attention of the village healer, Anna. At first Nory is troubled by this woman's attentions, thinking her gift of healing possessed of some dark force, but as time goes by and times get more desperate, Nory realizes how much of a kindred spirit the older woman is, and comes to appreciate the old woman's generosity, kindness, and gift for healing.This is a story that haunted me even after I finished it. The author writes with such heartfelt sincerity that I could picture the desperation within Nory and her family and friends as they struggled to contain their hunger and survive. The prose is descriptive and vivid, and the reader is able to visually picture the great suffering of the people of Ireland as portrayed by Nory and company. This is truly one of the best pieces of YA historical fiction I have read!

Nory Ryan live in Ireland during the patatoe famine, life is already hard enough with their landlord kicking their neighbors out of their houses left and right. Nory becomes apprenticed to Anna a healer, even though most of the people in Nory's village ridicule Anna, Anna just wants Nory to learn her cures so she may help others as she has. Maggie (Nory sister) leaves for Brooklyn, America where Nory believes the streets are paved with gold. Everyone starts to leave Ireland because without potatoes they will starve. Soon Celia and Granda leave for America, leaving Patch and Nory behind. When Patch, Sean and Sean's Ma leave Norty is the only one of her family remaining in Ireland. Will Nory ever see her family again? "Nory Ryan's Song" tells about how hard life must have for people during this time and how strong and brave they must have been. I recommend it for it all ages. It is thrilling but still teaches you something! For me it is a must-read!!!!!

This book was my literature pick to along with our history studies. It gives you a feel for the difficulties faced by the Irish during the potato famine without being inappropriate for children. My kids, ages 11 and 13, enjoyed it enough to read the other two books in the trilogy on their own.

Beautifully written. Very sad in parts but there was always something that made me want to keep reading. I felt every emotion of love, despair And hope along with the characters. This book reminds me of an Irish ballad.

am going to let my 9 yr old grandaughter read it. Some of the other famine books were alot of politics. This was a heart warming story of survival.

This was a common placard hanging in store windows in New York neighborhoods after the immigration of the Irish, following the Great Potato Blight and resulting famine in Ireland, 1845-1852. They arrived dirty, hungry, dressed in rags, carrying no possessions, and speaking a strange Celtic language. Too different from the American Dream to be part of it.Nory Ryan's Song is a narrative explanation of how and why those Irish left their beloved land, starving and in rags, to claim the largesse America offered. Giff strikes exactly the right chord in balancing sickening details of the famine with respect for the sensibilities of a 9-12 audience.This is the time of the great English take-over and their relentless effort to drive out the Irish from their own tiny plots of land. Not only did they take the land, they took animals, work tools, everything that gave the slightest hope of survival. No wonder the Irish have no fondness for the English. The expected Irish characters are present: the large Mallon family with an abundance of boys, the Ryans with an abundance of girls and one tiny boy, the feared local herbalist, the horrid English landlord and his henchman. Other books have portrayed famine and starvation with great conviction, but Giff makes us feel Nory's personal hunger and her powerful need to provide for others, like Queen Maeve of Irish legend.But, oh, the desperation from a total lack of food and the human drive to live, thus the eternal ember of the hearth that Nory learns to tend after her last older sister leaves for New York. Nory Ryan is just a snippet of a twelve-year-old with a lyrical voice that stirs the most surprising people. After members one by one leave, Nory and Patch, her skin-and-bones brother, are left. Anna, the local herbalist, takes them in and teaches Nory healing skills, and wrings out one of the most touching instances of deep love in 9-12 literature.The landscape, including animals, is just as much a character as the people. Giff's writing is so painterly that the reader is carried away with the saltiness of the winds, the putrid, rotting smell of the blighted potatoes, the wretched taste of the limpets taken from the sea, and the visual imagery of feet caked in dirt, ragged wisps of Patch's nightshirt that he wears 24/7, the razor sharp blades of grass that line the path to the ocean, the claws of the seabirds Nory tries to take from their nests.Reviewers make much of the last part of the book when Nory finds a way to feed her remaining brood over the weeks they await either return of or word from her father. Her last efforts are no more heroic than the others. Each does what is required. Finally, word comes and she begins her journey to New York and the placards in the windows. She plans to meet milk wagons filled with cans of milk and streets filled with jewels. There is a sequel: Maggie's Door.The book provides enough detail of the potato blight, the famine, the cruelty of the English for the impetus to read further. An author's delight. Giff's book is highly recommended.

This is the start of a really good series. After reading this book I had to finish the story with the rest. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline.

I am NOT a botanist by profession but have a strong interest in plants and have worked as a naturalist in a number of National Park Service areas, including Yosemite (YOSE) and Chiricahua Nat'l. Mon., and I do a lot of photography of plants. Being able to ID them in the field using a guide or flora is often necessary for accurate notes. My vocabulary has always been "shaky." I was first introduced to an earlier printing of this book by a fellow naturalist at YOSE, Marilyn H. (I'm forever thankful to her for that!), and it made using "Munz" (the most modern of the CA floras then) easier as the vocabulary in "Munz" was very complete, sometimes painfully so. (I said I was NOT a pro!) It was much easier to use it with "Munz" than by continually going to the back of "Munz" to look up the glossary. Harrington's neat book was not only useful but also easily carried in a day pack or camera bag.What I've just said about that earlier printing is just as valid for this one! The size is slightly different but it still easily fits into both day pack and camera bag. The book is simply a reprinting of the original but now it is readily AVAILABLE again. Some might consider the illustrations simplistic BUT, once reading the definition of a word, you can see the the feature defined is OBVIOUS... that is what I want! Tell me and show me... YES!!!You can tell how much I go to my old copy by how many pages are loose from the binding... hey, I've had it since 1973 and it is an oft-used paperback! In the past, whenever I've seen it in a used bookstore I've bought a copy or two to be given away to friends whose botanical vocabulary needs tweaking, like mine. I love this book, used it very often, and am thrilled that Ohio Univ. Press has reprinted it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

This is a book written for college-level field courses (as well as the independent naturalist). First published in 1957, this is the 1985 edition, so some of it may be out-dated. However, this book contains excellent information about what questions to ask when examining plants and how to use keys. Lots and lots of vocabulary terms are defined, and both common and scientific names of plants are given. I recommend it.

This is a great educational book. It is clearly written, with many pictures which will help me figure out plant species for the rest of my inquisitive life.

From the copyright date, this book was written in the fifties. The quality of the black and white photos is consistent with this guess, as is the rather pedantic style. There are also chapters on the structure of the nomenclature system, which is probably already well-known by most of the likely readers, and on how to collect plants, which may not be a good idea these days, at least for the rarer species.For $6 more, I'd go for the similar book by James/Melinda Harris. More focussed; better illustrations; less pedantic style.

Book was exactly the one we wanted. Shipping time was ok. Overall, no complaints.

Beautifully simple and easy to read. All plant lovers and students should pick this up for reference.

I have the original version. The new updated font is more pleasing to look at. The old version looks like an old type written essay.
