After devouring the ten-disc "Essential Collection" DVD set, the liner notes of the films in it prompted me to dig deeper into the lives of my all-time favorite funny men. Although some of the reviews for Simon Louvish's long and sometimes overly-detailed bio put me off a bit, I bit the bullet and ordered a copy. I just finished it last night and am so glad I went with this book. The author spends a lot of time tracing the roots of comedy but, at the same time, he also traces the slow but steady development of the finished Stan and Ollie characters we all came to know and love. The double lives in the title refers to their tumultuous and sometimes totally bizarre private lives vs their on-screen characterizations. Some parts take a little patience to get through but it's all worth it as everything gets tied up as you go along. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and have a much deeper appreciation for the boys, especially considering all the stuff going on behind the scenes. I've loved these two for sixty years and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who shares that affliction...err, affection.

This is a good book for fans of Laurel and Hardy. There is a lot of information about the boys’ lives and good information of their film history.It is not without its drawbacks. The story concentrates too much on their on their lives before they achieved fame in the heyday of the Hal Roach years of 1929 - 1934. While it contains individual discussions of their individual films, that discussion is cursory, brief and hurried. The account discusses the recurring cast members like James Findlayson and Mae Busch. While I realize this is a book about Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, those discussions could have been fuller.The plus side is in its account of their “double life,” alluded to in the subtitle. The private lives of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were apparently a mess. Anyone with only a passing familiarity of their comedy films will know that on the screen at least the spouses of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were portrayed as, charitably stated, shrews. Annoying, nagging, troublesome women. There was, unfortunately, some correlation in their real lives to their real spouses. Both were married multiple times. One of Stan’s wives couldn’t care less that he was a great comedian. He was even accused of bigamy. The wives of both were involved with substance abuse, trips to rehab sanitariums, — there was always a great deal of personal drama at home. The book provides newspaper accounts of their domestic troubles. The author has really done his homework. What better way for Stan and Oliver to channel their personal frustrations by ridiculing their wives on the screen!In summary, this is recommended for Stan and Oli fans.

I grew up in Finland in the 1970s, where comedy on TV was scarce and mostly broadcast as filler material between real programs. Laurel & Hardy appeared in both the fillers and surprisingly as feature programs too. I also used to have a 8mm Disney film, "Mickey's Polo Team" from 1936 in which Laurel and Hardy feature as polo-playing cartoon characters.I am one of the people who became to love the style of the dynamic duo. Stan's desolate weep routine and Ollie's physical being-hit-with-a-barrel-of-bricks gags appealed to my sense of humor, and they still do. One day, as I began to reminisce on the L & H films, I decided to buy a book on them and learn more of my childhood heroes.This book is a definite four stars' worth of history, not only on Laurel and Hardy, but also on vaudeville, pre-Hollywood comedy, and a veritable compendium of people who starred in such enterprises, either for a brief period of fame, or as a real star that shined for decades. There is also ample references to non-actors, ie. screenwriters, directors, producers, and even people who wrote the texts in silent films. As such it is very enjoyable.The author also does a great job in describing the early years of our heroes, with Stan following in his father's footsteps into the footlights of vaudeville in early 20th century England, and with Ollie having to endure a period in military college(!) before he finds his way from movie theater projectionist into the camera eye. Just think of the amount of hazing someone with his physique must have endured as a kid, and you begin to understand why his comedy has such a frail sense of humility in it.The boys' ventures into marriage proved to be stormy trips indeed, with multiple brides, plentiful alimony cases, and substance abuse providing much hassle in civilian life. In fact, it is incredible how the duo managed to bring out such classics as "Way Out West" and "Sons of the Desert" when their own private lives were in constant turmoil.The book is rife with anecdotes regarding people whose contribution to comedy was fleeting, and that is one of the problems with it. While the author has collected a vast repository of information regarding the supporting cast and production teams, sometimes the book gets bogged down in these details, and focus shifts a little too far from Stan and Ollie.The same is true for his depiction of comedy as a human function. I am very interested in the role of the comedian all the way from court jesters to Robin Williams, but in this book, the metaphysical sometimes takes precedence over the realization of comedy by the incomparable Laurel and Hardy. Some of the script snippets are also a little long, as are the descriptions of events that were in films that are lost to posterity.All in all, I am not saying it is not a good book - on the contrary, I enjoyed it a lot. With some condensing it'd be a great book, because it really manages to bring out the human side of Laurel and Hardy in both the professional and the private aspects of their lives.-Heikki Hietala, author of Tulagi Hotel

“Hope on the Plains” is the second book in The Dakota Series by Linda Byler. I did not read the first book in the series, but if I had I might have a different slant on this book. The story takes place on the plains of North Dakota during the 1930’s and the Great Depression. Those who tried to eke out a living during this time of drought and hard times had to have the constitution of an ox.The Detweiler family, an Amish family who lost the father to a maddened cow a few months before, are trying to make a go of the cattle ranch they want to build. Fighting fire, blizzards, wolves, floods, and dust storms, it is not easy to keep the faith. Some in the region are going back home to Pennsylvania. Sarah, the mom, is trying to believe that God will provide even though at times her children are near starvation. Hannah and Manny are working themselves to death to keep the herd of cattle they have from starving.I believe in hard work, but I have issues with Hannah and her attitude. She is a loner. Hates people, hates to be told no and hates for someone to question her ideas. She also is determined not to marry and holds men at arm’s length. Actually, she really got on my nerves to the point that I wished her mother would smack her. This really colored my thoughts on the book as a whole. Also, the ending left me wanting. Hannah was the reason for this also.

I've read the first two books of this series. It's hard to review the books because I can't get past the "heroine", who is one of the most unlikable characters I've ever seen in a book. It's one thing to be strong, brave, and to persevere through terrible hardships, doing what you have to do to survive. It's a whole different matter though to treat everyone around you like garbage. Yet, she does. This includes her family and people who did everything they could to keep her family alive. She's Narcissistic, mean, judgemental, and uncharitable.I was so disgusted with her, I almost stopped reading many times. I keep waiting for her to get her comeuppance, but so far she has not. She refuses to think anyone other than herself could possibly be right about anything. I'm not sure I will bother with the third book.Other than hating her and her antics, I do like the books.

I really love this author I think I've read just about everything she has written. That being said I like this series but the main female character is very unlikable. She is a rude snot. I wish the author would have made her a little more likable then maybe I would love this series.

Hannah, the main character has a terrible hateful attitude. I kept hoping she would soften as the story went on, but she never did, and no one stands up to her for her rudeness. The end was just a dropping off as well. Who in the world taught Ms. Byler how to write! I see by the description on book 3 in this series that Hannah continues her attitude and nothing gets better for them on the plains. Don't waist your time, your money, and your emotional energy on this series.

Normally I have enjoyed this author’s books but the first two in this series have really disappointed me. I will not be getting the third book. The main character is mean spirited and callous to all around her. I tried this second book hoping for a change in her but I don’t expect one anymore. I have almost put both books down many times. I feel like I have wasted my time and money and the author has let her readers down.

Having a hard time getting through this second book. Hannah is so rude and mean. Wish she were a little more likeable. And the younger children are rarely mentioned. It’s like they have disappeared. Only the baby is mentioned really. And not very much.

I had a really hard time getting they this book. The main character has nothing endearing at all. She was hateful, hardheaded to the point of cutting your nose off to spite your face. I will skip the sequel, I can't take another book focusing on such selfish behavior.

The historical quality of this book was fascinating and heartbreaking. I did begin to lose patience with the main character and her continued selfish, poor attitude.

Great book with practical advice to be a more positive parent, and person in general. It is a short book, but I actually enjoy that since I have a short attention span..so I didn't get bored while reading it...and actually finished a book!! I may even type up some of the tips and tricks and frame them, for easy reference.

As a school psychologist I'm the first person to admit we repeat the behaviors we were raised with; and model the behavior we experienced. This book reminds us to take a step back and look at how we speak to our kids. I read it in a day and plan to implement the advice immediately.

I enjoyed that the book was short and easy to understand. Very helpful insights. I didn't like the limited information on how to implement the parenting style. The ways to calm down in tense situations are good ones but there's not much elaborating on dos and don'ts. Having 4 kids 7 and under and a spouse who never steps up to give me a break i was looking for a bit more than what this book had to offer but overall a good starting point.

Its a great book....basically says, hey these are the most basic reasons that cause this behavior! Its an eye opener for ppl who are in denial about their parenting.

This book had some things in it that I needed to hear. I thought it was good advice and have already taken some steps. to stop all yelling.

This was a very easy read and well laid out. I didn't feel like I had to take copious notes, it will be easy to look back at the many key points. I connected with the description of the "yelling" parent and I'm hopeful that these techniques and methods will work for me and my family.

I rated it 4 stars only because I feel like it needed to go more in depth. Other than that, it is a fantastic book. It has opened my eyes to what should have been obvious things. I have realized that there is so much more I need to work on as a parent than I previously thought. I am eager to implement the changes and see how my relationship with my 6 year old improves.

This book is an easy read, but there were great tips and a couple of things I needed to hear. Some great advice I can use the next time my 3 year old challenges me. Definitely recommend.

Professor Flynn was an eminent scholar of antitrust law. This book captures the very latest in thought on this ever-changing subject in a very readable fashion. I didn't understand a lot of it in law school, mostly because it was so poorly written. I only wish I had read this book while he was alive and available to chat.
