#402,484 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The first two IQ novels were unique and interesting. This third one seems to just be a filler - like the author was required to write three novels due to a contract. Not worth my time or money. Won't be continuing with this author.

Ide created a compelling backstory for Isiah and loyal readers have watched him grow up in the first two books of the series. His journey began with small jobs, Isiah dealing with the loss of his brother, and introduced us to his friends. A shout out for Deronda.Wrecked takes this series to a new and darker level. Not only is Grace searching for her mother, Sarah, a group of ruthless former military prison guards is desperate to find her. Grace's father, long dead and a former military man, was in possession of compromising photographs which could not only ruin these men but send them to jail and Sarah possesses them. Not knowing that Grace has had no contact with her mother, they are as determined to isolate Grace as Isiah is to keep her safe.Between the brutality, the reader is able to follow Isiah's band of quirky friends who wrestle with familiar problems: their bills, overbearing mothers-in-law, resentments and all the rest.Although the situations where Isiah is able to win battles between seasoned military men armed with the latest weapons, including drones, with a slingshot may be a bit of a stretch, the author doesn't veer off into pure fantasy. Reading that IQ is headed for television is both good and bad. It's fun imagining what the characters look like rather than knowing. But all in all, Ide has created a great cast and this reader will be watching.

So, here’s IQ again, in Wrecked, the third entry in Joe Ide’s terrific new series of detective novels. It’s an adventure that’s even more outrageous than the first two. Oh, you haven’t met? IQ is Isaiah Quintabe of Long Beach, California. The private investigator. You might just want to call him Sherlock from the Hood. He’s some kind of genius.Ten years after Abu GhraibHere’s the deal. These four guys were all in Iraq, at Abu Ghraib. And, yes, they all took part in the really awful stuff that happened there. Torture, of course, including waterboarding. Rape, too. And only one of them seems to have had the slightest misgivings about it. Now, it’s more than ten years later, and one of those guys—the CIA officer who gave the orders—has built a “security” company like Blackwater and become a billionaire in the process. (“He was even richer than his hero, Donald Trump.”) So, he’s got even more to lose than the others if the truth about what they did at Abu Ghraib comes out. There were more photos, it turns outThat’s why all four are back together. Because Walczak, the billionaire, has just gotten a blackmail demand from a woman named Sarah that he used to know. It turns out that Sarah’s husband, who’d been at Abu Ghraib too, had taken lots of pictures of all the really, really bad stuff they did. The woman wants a million dollars or she’ll release the photos online. And Walczak is convinced she’ll do that even if he does pay the money. So, naturally, they’ve got to kill her, right?Sherlock from the Hood takes on another outrageous caseThe problem is, they don’t have a clue where she is. Sarah disappeared ten years ago. Not even her daughter, Grace, knows where she’s hiding out. Which is a problem for her, because she really wants to get back in touch with her mother. And that leads Grace to contact Isaiah. She’s heard IQ is really good at finding missing people. And he’s willing to do just about anything for Grace, because, well, he’s seen her around the hood and he’s got a crush on her.All of which explains, more or less, how Isaiah and Grace end up on a collision course with Walczak and the other bad guys. And, this being the kind of book it is, we know there will be fireworks along the way. Yes, sorry to say, violence. Really ugly violence. It’s even there in the Prologue. But don’t let that turn you off this book. It’s lots of fun, too.Again, outrageous charactersThe IQ novels are full of outrageous characters, and Joe Ide outdoes himself in Wrecked. Here, for example, is Junior, a drug dealer with a peculiar attachment to the English language. Listen:** “Are you and I correlated or do we coexist in separate realities?” (Translation: Junior hasn’t figured out that the attractive woman who’s taken a seat next to him is hitting on him.)** “You thought you could recapitulate my premises and not forfeit the residue?” (Translation: somebody stole a bag of money from Junior’s apartment and he wants it back.)Then there are the two thirteen-year-olds from the Carver Middle School Science Club, Phaedra Harris and Gilberto Cervantes. These two kids talk like Oxford dons (but without the accent). As Isaiah observes, “Phaedra was obviously smart but not like the smart kids on TV. She wasn’t acting like an adult. It was as if she was an adult . . . If it wasn’t for her age, she could have hosted Good Morning America.”Then there’s Chester C. Babbitt, the bow-tie-wearing psychopath who manufactures knives.Well, you get the point. I won’t go on. And to explain how all these characters (and more) fit together in this story would spoil the fun. Read the book. If you like detective fiction, you’ll be glad you did. There's no Dr. Watson for this Sherlock from the Hood, and no deerstalker cap, but you'll love the guy's mind.

I agree with Ide's critics' good opinions of "IQ" and his friends as havebeen developed here. I'm not crazy about the love story, which is obviouslystuck on to "humanize" IQ and we really don't need it. I would grant lots ofpraise for Book 3's use of the Abu Ghraib setting. That's a new one for thisgenre. He lets us know the meaning of pain and I could hardly stand to readsome of the scenes, but it's very well done and I'm ready to buy Book 4.

Joe Ide's third novel in his IQ series is simply great. His writing has reached another level, and its meditations on revenge and violence will long give me something to think about. If you haven't heard of this series before - think of a modern day young Sherlock Holmes... only he's a black kid from East Long Beach that takes cases mostly from his neighborhood and is paid whatever they can give him. Gangs and drugs are still a massive problem, and Isaiah Quintabe (IQ) has to nimbly navigate this environment with Dodson, a former street hustler who is more man of action and money than Watson was to Holmes. In this novel, they both have to help a young woman find her missing mother, as well avoid some of the worst enemies you would want. The bad guys are as evil as you can imagine, but Ide still manages to give them a sliver of humanity that only makes them more horrifying in contrast. Previous secondary characters that I had written off initially as jokes have slowly become interesting and fully human people in this world. Twists and turns happen in natural ways, and revenge is revealed as an empty satisfaction. I cannot wait to see where Joe Ide takes us next.

This one seems more loosely plotted, and a swirl of characters that can be hard to keep track of.I suspect it was edited in a hurry to rush the third book out while Joe is still hot. A shame really; another rewrite or two would have resulted in a much better book.

Starting with the first book," IQ" this series is so amazing. I have read some of the books several times. Complex, funny, and a darn good read, I wonder how the author has invented so much to wonder at in almost every paragraph. Do yourself a big favor and buy all books. "Wrecked" is the third in the series and is so amazing. I can't wait until the 4th book!

Chief Inspector Gamache returns to Three Pines when a tragedy befalls Clara Morrow's celebration dinner for her solo show at the famed Musee in Montreal, Canada. The show is an overwhelming success for Clara, but it doesn't carry the joy it should. Peter, Clara's husband just can't be happy for her at the cost of his personal feelings, a former gallery owner appears but is not wanting to sign Clara for the reasons he should, and to cap off the party, a former friend, who showed herself to be a vindictive person, appears to apologize or is it to ruin the joy?A death is Clara's garden brings the Surete to her and the villagers, whom the Chief Inspector knows well, are witnesses to the truth. This is a complex, evolving novel of suspense and a deep study of human emotions and what drives them. It is also one of the finest narratives on the subject of alcoholism that I have read.Ms. Penny surpasses herself with this book. I pray many more will follow and that I can grow with Gamache family and friends...

A Trick of the Light, the midpoint in Louis Penny’s creation of the person, Armand Gamache. You might say he is a fictional character, not a person. Ours is a free country, if you stay shut of the political correctness police, that is, and you can say what you want. For me, Monsieur Gamache may have been a character, but he has become a person. Some of him, I do not want to be, but some of that some, I, with high probability, am. Other parts of him I also am, and am happy to be so. Still other parts I would like to be. Some of that latter, despite my aspirations, will never come to pass.I confess to you my brothers and sisters, I read the first Gamache book, Still Life, at the recommendation of Number Three kid. Half way through the second chapter, I quit. The characters and settings seemed to come too fast and the pace was too slow. I couldn’t grab hold of the characters and settings and I wanted to say, “Make something happen already.” I remembered a literature course I had where the prof told us that we had to work a bit, sometimes, to unearth literary gems. I went back to Still Life and made it to chapter three before quitting a second time. Number Three has always been an avid reader and has recommended great books for me to read. I had never been disappointed with her recommendations before, so I picked up Still Life again. And plowed on beyond chapter 3. Behold, literary gem stones. And ore carts full of gem stones in subsequent installments of the Gamache series.I confess, further, that in one book, a later one, I got to page 400, and was still waiting for the Ah Ha, here it is. I’d begun to wonder if Ms. Penny had squeezed all the juice out of Armand that he had to give, when, Lo, my reading eyes discovered what they’d been (patiently) waiting for.So, Ms. Penny, I give you seventy stars for the fourteen Gamache books on the street. Please tell me that your fingers weren’t crossed behind your back when you promised to publish Kingdom of the Blind next month. And I sincerely hope, for my sake and yours, your pants didn’t catch fire when you made the promise.Till November then.

Penny's mysteries are not traditional classic mystery novels. She writes with a depth and nuance that is remarkable. Her mysteries are more about the human soul, profound questions and deep emotions. Having read almost all of her Gamache books, I feel like she just keeps getting better at her craft. She is gifted at creating a sense of place with her novels. Her love of Montreal, Quebec culture and the beautiful landscapes that about there shines through and provides a rich backdrop for this book and her others as well. Penny is also gifted in her ability to create characters who have depth and realism. This book is set in the idyllic, quiet town of Three Pines with many familiar characters that fans know well. The novel is set against the backdrop of the art world and its many players and the sensitivities, fear and greed that drive that world. Just like her prior books, this mystery is about finding the answers to big philosophical questions to find a killer. New readers and longtime fans will not be disappointed. This is one of her best written.

This is one of those books I kept thinking about for quite a while after I read it - it was almost a week before I picked up another book to read. Complex characters, each with his or her own problems in a tight-knit community that is too small to be on any maps. In the previous book Inspector Gamache and his second in command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir were shot and almost died. They were both sent to counseling when they recovered enough physically. Jean-Guy quit counseling too soon and is trying to take care of himself, but he's getting worse. He's not taking his pain pills the in the prescribed doses and his stomach is too upset to eat much so he's losing weight. In fact, Jean-Guy has become gaunt. He gets very little sleep, which is not at all good. I used to work in a hospital's sleep disorder center where I learned there that lack of sleep can affect you mentally. A lot of this book is focused on mental health.

The books in this series never disappoint. The authors ability to seamlessly overlap multiple stories in the telling of one never fails to astonish me. These are truly "page turners". I know that term gets thrown around slot but this book really was. I'm not overly qualified to properly critique these books some may say because i probably haven't read ALL the BIG mystery writers. But for what it's worth my two favorites are this series, if course the D.I. Thomas Lynly series by Elizabeth George. Unfortunately I'm all fought up in that series and am rapidly working my way through this one.Well i hope you give not only this book a chance but the whole series. You won't be disappointed.

Amazon.com Review

Here's a flat-out classic. In 1962, Czech author-illustrator Miroslav Sasek created This Is San Francisco, another installment of his series of children's travel guides (This Is Paris, This Is London, This Is New York). With his usual distinctive and charming style, Sasek tours the sights around the City by the Bay, including Lombard Street, the cable cars, Fishermen's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, and Chinatown. This 2003 reissue edition also includes a number of annotations about how certain locales have changed since the book was published. There's a good chance that anyone who grew up in or near San Francisco will remember this book fondly. Everyone else has a joyous discovery ahead. --David Horiuchi

This is a favorite of my family and myself. I have purchased a copy for my niece and my son to go along with the copy my parents still have from my youth. every home needs one! Having grown up in SF this remains a special reminder of the history of the place and the illustrations are marvelous. I don't know if individual prints from Sasek are available, but I'd love to get some framed from this book.If you've ever wanted a quick taste of a place, This is San Francisco is a great primer for any child.

sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts. i also found this entry to be a lovely springboard of ideas on a recent trip to san francisco (the largest chinatown in the united states!).and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the city...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the city WAS as well as the present day differences.i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either san francisco, or simply in wonderful illustration.

I gave this book to my granddaughter who is 3 while we were visiting San Francisco. I thought she might like looking at the pictures in the book after driving over the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the tea garden, riding on the cable cars, etc. However even though she is a book lover, the pictures in this book did not seem to interest her. I thought the book was great but I especially like the vintage feel of the pictures which clearly appealed to the adults that saw the book rather than the kids.

I love the way Sasek captures the city and all the iconic landmarks. I would love to frame the pages as a collection for the wall. This book is a great gift for anyone who's "left their heart in San Francisco" which I didn't fully understand until recent visits to the city and surrounding areas.

We visited San Francisco recently so this book was really fun to have. We love reading it to our children.

We love this classic! Its an outstanding book that has lovely "retro" feeling illustrations of all the major attractions in San Francisco. The author does a wonderful job depicting San Francisco scenes and capturing the feel of the city. There are lots of people & places to explore, and the details are fantastic. We didn't have any problems with the print quailty of our copy-- looks fantastic!

My child had this book, and now I make it a habit to give to my friend's children as a present. This will make you nostalgic if you've been to the City, but will be just as fun to look at and read if you haven't been there.

a wonderful childrens book, interesting to adults as well, its fun to read and identify all the sites. The quality of the paper is nice, similar to the original one. I own a couple of the books from the first edition and the new edition is quite good, the san francisco now page, mentions some the changes since the book was written and is a nice addition. Good Quality, glad they decided to re-edit them. looking forward to completing my collectionI recommend them for 4+ years old, a wonderful storytime book.

#124,400 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

First my background: I am 59 years old, and suffered recurring back pain since I was 20 years old... when I stupidly (youthfully?) carried a GM automatic transmission up a flight of stairs, from a basement, and loaded it in a van. When I got back to my destination, I could not get out of the van. Well eventually I did, but needed to lie on my side for a couple of days until the pain subsided.Ever sine then... almost 40 years... I would eventually "go stupid" and not take precautions when lifting or moving something, or maybe, simply bending over to brush my teeth or shave, and my back would "go out". And each time I would rest, maybe lay on the floor on my side, then "get better" and go on.Flash forward to two weeks ago: I was in a rush to get the outdrive of my motorboat off... it weighs 97 pounds, and was stuck. I could have gone in the house and put on my Mueller spined lumbar support... but didn't. Well of course we know what happened... but it was different this time. The damage was far more severe than ever before, gradually causing me the most pain I had ever endured in my life. When I had to get out of bed, I barely could... it was literally torture. I was in awe of it.I thought I got better after a couple of days, but then the it got worse again. I went to the ER, where they prescribed 800 MG Ibuprophens every 8 hours, and percocet "as needed" for pain. The pain was so intense that the percocet barely cut the edge off. Getting in and out of the car was probably the most difficult physical and painful task of my life. I tried sleeping on the floor, I tried sleeping on the couch, with my back brace on. I got worse and worse, and went to Urgent Care just last Friday (It is Tuesday). I spent 12 hours on the floor Saturday, using a "bottle" so I didn't have to get up. They now prescribed a new antinflammatory, Nabumatone, and a muscle relaxant. I thought that Saturday this was the answer, because even though I was on the floor, I could "actually" get up two times and walk for 5 minutes... until the pain and wobbly feeling had me crawling back on the floor. Sunday was the same. I knew I would have to go see a specialist, and could not imagine there was any other hope than surgery... and worried that this was going to be my life now: Constant, daily, unrelenting pain.I point all this out so that readers can understand "where I'm coming from", when I talk about this book. And also, to add, I watched every professional and amature youtube video on solving back pain, and excersises, and so on... and all the advice about sleeping, sitting and standing. Nothing worked. Then, yesterday, Monday, a friend and co-worker of my wife's told her of her 20 years plus of back problems, and three surgeries, and meds, and said the only thing that helped her was "7 Steps to a Pain-Free Life". She said that if you follow the exercises religiously, it will eliminate or remove most or all of the pain, as it did for her. Now I am a skeptic, and a pragmatist... but that sounded good, so I came here and read the reviews. What did I have to lose by trying this book? I ordered it, and rather than wait, I also bought the ebook. For a total of both of $38, that would be nothing if it worked, and a tiny risk if it did not.So I took three hours Monday afternoon and carefully read the background, anatomy lessons, care and cause sections, and of course, the exercise routine. I have to say the background explanations by McKenzie really appealed to me: I want to know the "why" of anything suggested, rather than just being told "what do do", and his explanations made practical, logical sense to me. And with the insistent suggestion that one follow the instructions to the letter, I did just that when I started the routine.Well as I did the routine the first time, my pain.... which was spread from the center lower back to my upper right buttock, seemed to move to my center bottom back: Just as was predicted COULD happen, and why this was good. And then, for the first time over a week, I was able to stand! My lower back muscles were sore... but totally tolerable, and probably about 1/20 of what they had been. More importantly, I could stay standing, and walk around. Remember just before the exercises, I could only stand for maybe 5 minutes until the pain was unbearable. Now I found myself walking around for over an hour and a half. I did wear my Mueller back brace, to help support my lower spine... I didn't want to accidentally re-injure what was apparently getting to fix.Sure I had soreness... I had beat the hell out of everything down there, and the exercises probably add a bit of new soreness at first. But by the second set... two hours later... they were easier, I could move further during them, and felt even better afterwards. I was able to sleep in my own bed last night, and more importantly, get out of it relatively pain-free.So I'm going to stick with this routine, and when and if the benefits continue, move on to the other exercises, and follow all the advice for life-habits that will help avoid this ever happening again. And I'll post an update when and if this is all over for me, or if it turns out it does not help at some point, or something else arises needing comment.Sorry for the long and overly-wordy review. But I know from personal experience, if you are in the agony so many of us are, you both have the time and desire to know what might work to fix the problem, and maybe why, and this book and method, I think, will do both.UPDATE: It is several months later now, late summer, late September. I thought I would add how this has worked out for me, since:I walked a couple of times a day, a mile to three miles, around my neighborhood. I wore a Mueller back brace... it has spines to support the lordosis shape (the inner curve of the lower back), as recommended in the book. That curve is important, and essential to staying pain free. The walks helped a great deal I think. Within another week or so I walked without the brace. After most of the soreness went away, also within a couple of weeks, I followed the recommendations in the book for the exercises to maintain my progress. I found that sitting was still a problem for several weeks, into early June. I attributed this to the "rotation" of my pelvis when sitting... it seemed to aggravate the injured part of my lower back somehow. So what worked for me was to be sure that that "rotation", or orientation, was the same as when standing and walking. One thing that is so important, again, is the curve of the lower back: So I bought a lumbar support for my main chair, and make certain my back is "arched" into it. Also, I have the lumbar setting on my car set up pretty high.I could not drive a great distance until mid- to late-June, without soreness in "that area". I would get out every hour and do my standing exercises, and that would keep me going. But by mid summer, I could drive several hours... I took several trips to Maine, over 7 hours for me... with little or no problems. The only setback was one day when I "spaced it", and was bent over like an arc (!!!!!), wiping mud from my wet tent as I was folding it. This was in August. I felt a sharp pain, and immediately dropped and did the exercises... which fixed it to some extent, but then on my ride home I was a bit sore and stiff, and had to stop every hour, exercise, and walk around.A reminder that these injuries are real, and do take time and care. And since then, I've been careful... I can walk, run, lift items, I swim, I can launch my 22 foot sailboat, my 19 foot motorboat, get in and out, climb the ladders out of the water, haul gear into the boats... point being, if I am careful, I can do anything I did before. I just will not bend over sharply and do ANYTHING. I stoop, hold my back in the proper position, before lifting. One other thing: I now only sleep on my left side, or on my back, and never on my stomach. On my stomach, the lordosis is curved out, not in, and it will make me a bit sore again. I have a 2" memory foam cushion on our mattress, though, and that allows me to lay on my back, the curve preserved.Once again, I've been wordy... but maybe these details will be of interest to others. And I hope I've not made it sound more dire than it is... I really feel fine, that I am "fixed"... just that I know there are limits. And I also feel that those limits will change, get better, as my body and back "get used to" whatever happened in there.

I'm VERY surprised to see the above 1-star rating on this book for the McKenzie Method self-physical therapy because my experiences were incredibly positive:---realigning my pelvis after injuring my left foot's plantar fasciitis stepping on a carpet threshold screw---unknotting my right side neck muscles that caused scalp pain/headaches when trying to sleepBut, of course:1--I followed Robin McKenzie's disclaimer, repeated before every exercise set, to consult a professional MD or physical therapist/chiropractor if the pains are either first time issues OR if exercises don't produce results within a few days.2--Also, I followed his exercise directions EXACTLY, as he constantly stresses. My imbalance and pains literally MELTED AWAY BY DAY 3!I had used my library's older book edition so was thrilled to buy this updated 2014 edition with added shoulder pain exercises.Don't just listen to me. Any Google search for Robin McKenzie's legacy will do a far better promotion than I ever could.Anybody who thinks this exercise method is only 1 star is sorely (pun intended) misdirected or skewed.Meanwhile, I'm thrilled to be pain-free, well-rested, and richer from all the co-pays I have saved by ending my ineffective chiro/podiatrist therapy sessions.Eternally grateful, Robin McKenzie! And thanks to Amazon for making his updated book available!

I was struck by a bottle to the head while standing upon a twelve foot wall. Broke both bones in my leg, crushed my ankle. Spent three years having operations on foot and leg. Rods and many pins, nuts and bolts. After Three Years on The sofa and in bed, I became mobil only to have debilitating lower back pain and left thigh pain with crippling electric like shocks. Three more years of pain therapy and physical therapy. I borrowed a friend's copy of this book, read and practice this book. Then bought my own. NO PAIN FOR FOUR MONTHS. Fully mobile. Back to my prior 10 year old activities. Signed, A very active former U.S. Marine.

The digital version does not show the illustrated figures that is stated. Blank pages. Without seeing the illustrations I have to imagine the positions required.

I suffered from headaches daily. I began doing the neck exercises in this book and I got instant relief and am almost 100% headache free now. I didn't want to go to a neurologist and keep taking meds so spent $12 for what I would describe as a miracle cure. Once I began doing the exercises, I could hear and feel the creaks leaving my neck muscles. Thank you for my freedom from pain!

I have had chronic neck issues over the years and a few months ago I was traveling and under a great deal of stress and the neck issue flared up and it was the worse it has ever been. I started up with a new chiropractor when I returned home and he recommended the McKenzie exercises. Of course fool that I am I didn't take him up on it for about the first month of therapy. This week I started them and good grief!!!! I am amazed. The progress I have made in less than one week is phenomenal.
