I was kind of disappointed in this book. I bought it to read with my children 3rd-8th grade. I feel parents should be aware that this book dedicates a few pages that talk about how she fell in love with a married man. It kind of paints the picture that she was a poor victim because the man apparently didn’t love his wife anymore but wouldn’t leave her. I just think parents should be warned Incase this goes against what you want to teach your children.

These are great books. All of the Who Was books are excellent for young readers. My daughter gets very excited when she can teach us a little something about history and she seems to truly find things interesting. I think this is a great read for grades 3 and 4

Thank you so much for this beautiful prepared book that help me to become better acquainted with El Salvador. I love the book and the country. I shall share this with my students and friends. We have a precious El Salvadorean pastor at our church who conducts services in Spanish in the late afternoon on Sundays.

I'm usually quite careful about the money I spend and all that. But somehow it escaped me that this is a children's book. I thought it was close to a tourguide (and there seem to be no tourguides specializing in El Salvador).Now I'm not going to be an @$$ and give it a bad review because I made a mistake. This is a simply written, glossy photo-full book with lots of facts. It reminds me a lot of an atlas meant for children, but concentrated on El Salvador. Not bad. And I don't hate myself for buying it, given my fascination with the world.If I had a child, I'd certainly pass it along to them to ignite their imagination about other places and also help them understand that their standard of living as an American (born into any economic bracket) should not be taken for granted.

Maybe someday I will go, but because of this book, I held off.

It's hard to find good books on El Salvador that aren't about the war, and believe me, I've looked! My husband is Salvadoran and I'm a Spanish teacher trying to show there's more to Central America than just Costa Rica. The two good children's books our library carries were written back when the war was still going on, and I've been looking for a newer book to recommend as a library acquisition. Now I have at least one entry for my list, and the paperback version is a bargain for any home library as well.The book has only 32 pages, so while it touches on many subjects, each only gets a two-page spread. Within these limitations, though, the book presents useful information in a narrative form and with minimal bias. The "struggle and civil war" section does a remarkably good job of giving background behind conflicts such as La Guerra de Fútbol ("the Soccer War"). The section on "Native Peoples" gives a good treatment of the assimilation of these groups, with a look at the Pipíl and Lenca peoples in the present day. The book's discussion of the post-peace agreement period is very general, and despite the 2002 copyright, no mention is made of the devastating earthquakes of January and February, 2001; I can only assume the book had already gone to press.Halfway through the book, the book changes from a general overview into a more vignette-style presentation of selected topics under the usual headings ("Music and Dance," etc.). The section on family traditions, for example, gives one or two paragraphs each to baptisms, birthdays, quinceañeras, folk beliefs and "curanderas" (folk healers). In these sections, the presentation is a bit haphazard, but still provides worthwhile material. The arts and crafts section includes the role of cooperatives and political art; another topic, "The Flavors of El Salvador," brings food into a detailed and interesting depiction of daily life. The only part of the book I didn't care for is the ending, a fictional episode of a family visit; it tries a little too hard to tie in every kind of cultural topics via stilted and unnatural dialogue. The youngest readers probably won't mind, but upper elementary and middle schoolers would roll their eyes.The "Life in the Countryside" section is a treasure. The pictures show everyday life much as I saw it when I went to visit my in-laws in early 2002. Nearly every sentence has some detail that made me shout with recognition, such as the mention of using car batteries to power TVs and radios. Oddly, the book doesn't mention the solar collectors powering the batteries, an interesting topic for kids. Also, the book mentioned the scarcity of vehicles, indoor plumbing, and electricity, yet said nothing about phones. A country with so many expatriates is a country that cares a LOT about phones, and life has been profoundly affected by a boom in cell-phones in "el campo," where a phone call used to require an hourlong walk to town.While this series only covers 22 countries so far, the publishers have wisely avoided the tactic of presenting all the "usual suspects" before getting to the lesser known countries. It's refreshing to see countries like Nigeria and the Philippines among these titles -- you expect that with long-running series that cover every single country, but for a series that only covers a fraction of the world's peoples, it's nice to see someone went beyond the obvious.

For anyone who loves small craft, or is interested in Adirondack guide boats, this book is a gem. And if you don't know about Adirondack Guide Boats, you owe it to yourself to learn about them! In my opinion, the Adirondack Guide Boat is the most graceful little rowboat ever. I've been in love with the design since seeing 2 or 3 of them in the collection at Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic Connecticut back in the 1980s. In addition, I acquired a kevlar hull for a guideboat from Steve Kaulbach's Adirondack Guideboat shop in Ferrisburgh, Vermont several years ago and John Gardner's meticulous measured drawings and notes on the construction of these boats (included in this book) have been a Godsend for me in installing decks and building seat frames for it. In my opinion, whether you are a boatbuilder or just someone who likes reading about cool old boats (and maybe daydreaming about having one), this book is very worth having in your collection.

I'm building one of these right now. Although I have spent some time in the Adirondacks and rowed a guide boat, I had not an inkling as to the long history of the design. This is a fascinating read. I know the area and I've been on most of the lakes described so the pictures and history are very much alive and engrossing.The detail in both the book and its appendices is remarkable. If someone picks up the book but has no idea of what an Adirondack Guide Boat is, they will finish it with a a desire to trek up to one of the lakes and dip an oar.

For me as a boat building instructer this book had everything that I was hoping to find. I found it to be full of very interesting and historic information.

I'm a small boat builder in CT and I just launched a 13 foot guide boat this summer. I started the boat only because I loved its lines but it was more than I could finish until I got a copy of the Durant book. It has historical background but also detailed construction drawings and notes on traditional materials used for various parts and pieces as well as construction technique. I wouldn't have been able to complete this project with out this valuable reference. This fall I'll be giving a lecture at my local library about the history of the boat and the people who created them. Guess what my primary source material is.

Although I have not practiced Buddhist meditation, I adhere to Tibetan Buddhism and especially Bonpo as the most kind and didactic of all religious proposals. Alex Walking narration is completely believable and I can recognize in his descriptions my own experience as both "militant" and private seeker. Special mention to entheogens chapter. Walking is an unprejudiced seeker and his experiences with entheogens are not just realistic but encouraging for those who enter the extraordinary path of existential search in this era.

I learned a lot. I enjoyed the explanations of Buddhism and meditation. The author's personal stories are very vivid. I'll be rereading many parts.

Really good for existing stock traders who are tired of gaps through stops and want tighter risk management (and less micromanagement). After six years of swing and position trading, I'm not trading options yet, but this book set me up with what I need to know to shift some of my trading into that arena. Thank you, Ivan!

I have other books from the author and have never been disappointed. Swing trading with options is something I have attempted to do successfully many times over the last 10 years - but not consistent enough, greedy and insufficient risk management and too large positions. He addresses those potential issues early in the small book and adds more that will help novices or experts for example regarding watch lists, filters and so much more. It is a honor to receive this book and I already see improvements in my success rate and profitability. Worth the price!!! Thank you Mr. Ivanov!!

Rand Richards is a San Francisco-based historian, author, and lecturer. Two of his books are local bestsellers: Historic San Francisco: A Concise History and Guide and Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City's Past. He has lectured before many groups, including the California Historical Society, the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, and the San Francisco History Association. The latter organization recently awarded him their Oscar Lewis Award for his contributions to knowledge of San Francisco history.

The work is very good, but perhaps a bit dated. As a work, it is lengthy with useful biographical essays, but less useful places to see, many of these well outside the city in the Bay Area. The illustrations are all B & W. The conversational tone is good. A newer alternative is Chronicles of Old San Francisco of the Museyon Guides by Gael Chandler, with color illustrations, prose as lively, differing details that seem as interesting and with perhaps a better flow. Both books have a few tours, those in this work relegate to a later section where they are easier to find and unlike the few tours of the work here, and of an accompanying volume by Mr. Richards, the tours have handy thumbprint photos to help you find your way along the tour.

Good ,clear exposition of people and events that created San Francisco.I wasn't that interested in the tour guide, but for a first-time visitor, it would be excellent.

This one was so good I ordered the book for I Read It on My. But I'd like to take it with me when I go to San Francisco so I ordered the book.

The book is a great, interesting read. The information is condensed, clear and flows easily- however the book would really really benefit by including a map of the MODERN city, this way a reader can see exactly where some of the things the book discusses took place.
