In a relatively short time the whole “secret filming world†has changed. Blink and literally you can miss a hidden camera today and the technology is continuously changing and improving.The author knows his stuff, working for the BBC on a current affairs programme and he has become a bit of a guru within this area. It all makes for an interesting read, mixing practical advice and real-world stories of hidden filming. Hidden filming can have a valid role to play within journalism. It can also have its place within law enforcement and even securing your own evidence to support suspicions or allegations of wrongdoing by others, such as a rogue plumber or carer. With this ability to record comes responsibilities and this book will help you make a hidden recording and hopefully not fall foul of the law in the process.For those who may need this knowledge professionally it is a veritable goldmine at a great, low price. For the rest of us, it is just a fascinating peek into a possibly unknown world.

The title suggests that this could be a book about how the public is being spied upon and how little privacy is left after security-conscious institutions and governments have sprayed ‘terrorism’ all over the media on a daily basis. Although there is some discussion on the moral aspect of secret filming – there is a chapter entitled, ‘Do You Really Have To?’ – this book is mainly about what cameras to use, and how to use them when secretly filming your subject.This is a book that will most interest private detectives, whistle-blowers, desperate people, and perverts. Neither is it a book that informs us about what institutions and governments do so far as secret filming is concerned. Nonetheless, it is a serious book by an accomplished expert in the field of covert filming. Secret filming has yielded many positive results, as Plomin tells us, in areas whether children and invalid patients are concerned, but if one were to start asking whether he needs to do some secret filming because some crime is suspected but cannot yet be proved, going to the police may be the better option. The moral aspects of secret filming require a deeper and more expansive discussion than can be found in this book.
