Review

“Gayle Boss writes lovingly about animals in their habitats using rich and lyrical language. Children will learn—and be awestruck—as their parents read about creatures they know, and don't know.  I'm certain families will make reading this lovely book together a yearly tradition, whether they observe Advent or not.  All Creation Waits: The Advent Mystery of New Beginnings is a beautiful addition to any family library.”—Deborah Heiligman, author of Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith, a National Book Award Finalist“This book reminds me of what St. Paul tells us in Romans 8:19—All creation waits! In this invigorating view of Advent the contrasts are beautifully presented—between darkness and light, waiting and arrival, sleeping and waking, human and animal creatureliness. The stories and illustrations partake of the kind of reality Christ exemplified in his Advent. How lovely that... has taken Paul's insight—“all creation waits”—and translated it to include the creatures whose lives are caught by winter. How helpful it is to join the animals during their Advent waiting.” —Luci Shaw, Writer in Residence, Regent College, author and poet“To be awake in the world each winter is to sense loss, to know the weight of waiting. This book’s illustrations and descriptions of the winter habits of 24 animals are gentle lessons in biology—about how lactic acid pools in the bloodstream of a turtle or a porcupine’s gut digests wood. But the animals are also a metaphor for faith, and the final chapter explores the meaning of a God who became incarnate “as a child at home among animals” for the sake of a creation that still waits.” —Christian Century, (November 2016)“All Creation Waits: The Advent Mystery of New Beginnings showcases twenty-five fresh images of the foundational truth that lies beneath and within the Christ story. In twenty-five portraits depicting how wild animals of the northern hemisphere ingeniously adapt when darkness and cold descend, we see and hear as if for the first time the ancient wisdom of Advent: The dark is not an end but the way a new beginning comes. Short, daily reflections that paint vivid, poetic images of familiar animals, paired with charming original wood-cuts, will engage both children and adults. Anyone who does not want to be caught, again, in the consumer hype of “the holiday season” but rather to be taken up into the eternal truth the natural world reveals will benefit immensely from reading All Creation Waits. An informative and inspiring read from cover to cover, All Creation Waits is especially recommended to all members of the Christian community regardless of denominational affiliation. —Midwest Book Review “Each of the beautiful creatures in this little book is a unique word of God, its own metaphor, all of them together drawing us to the One we all belong to. Adapting to the dark and cold they announce in twenty-four different ways the Good News of Advent: that through every dark door the creating Love of the universe waits.” —Richard Rohr, OFM “A wonderfully refreshing sidelong book that makes you stop and think and ponder and consider and contemplate and see not only Advent but your entire blessed life with new eyes. Which seems to me to be the whole point of any generous honest art. Which All Creation Waits most certainly is.” —Brian Doyle, author of Chicago “This book is a delight to savor and behold. I am someone who believes that the earth is our original monastery, and this worthy guide invites us intimately into the gifts of winter by exploring the rhythms of various birds, bees, and animals during the holy season of Advent. A lovely invitation into the quiet mysteries of darkness.” —Christine Valters Paintner, PhD, author of Illuminating the Way: Embracing the Wisdom of Monks and Mystics

Gayle Boss' book for advent - All Creation Waits - takes the winter survival stories of twenty-four woodland creatures and makes poetry of their small tales. The white-tail deer, lake trout, chipmunk, honey bee, and common loon are among the beings that inspire Boss' deeply spiritual and natural prose. Beginning December 1 and ending December 25 with Jesus, The Christ, the book is made for slow, thoughtful reading and reflection, like savoring a complexly flavored cup of coffee one sip at a time. Gorgeous woodcut illustrations of each creature enhance the sensibility of the book and help make it perfect for young children as well as adults.Boss began years ago, when her children were small, to tell them about wintering creatures instead of using commercial Advent calendars that often seem to celebrate Christmas without allowing for the waiting and deepening of Advent. Perhaps because of this family history and certainly because of the way her own spirituality is rooted in the natural world, Boss has a way of making these meditations on North American animals, insects, and fish seem an obvious alternative to our culture's over-done Christmas. A welcome relief from a shopping and partying season that now lasts from Halloween to January 1 and emphasizes material consumption and manic joy.One does not have to be Christian to appreciate this book. With its focus on nature's waiting through the cold, All Creation Waits brings us around to season's flow, energy's ebb. And there are many of us who are sad when the sun is low and the days short. This books offers a new perspective on what that means.Beautifully written and illustrated, this book will become a treasured part of you and your family's winter life.

I looked forward to each day's animal and readings and the lovely etchings too. Gayle's word sketches remind us that we each prepare for Christ's advent in different ways. Some of us hunker down to heal, some of us brazen it out but eventually each of us reaches the of ourselves ready to say, "Even so, come, Lord Jesus."These sketches tell how individual animals prepare for winter. The tone is soothing but the facts are fascinating. Highly recommended. I think most children used to read alouds would also like this; but it is not just for children.

Having discarded several books as options for an Advent study in my spiritual community this year, I came across Gayle Boss's wondrous work. Her extraordinary meditations on how different creatures adapt to the dark and cold are quiet, resonant, profound, the language stunningly beautiful and fresh. Her attentive, reverential gaze on each animal--painted turtle, black bear, wood frog, oposum, red fox and more--reminds us indeed that each is "fearfully and wonderfully made," that each is, in the words of Richard Rohr, "a unique word of God." Group members unanimously embraced the book, one woman reading some of the meditations with her 9 year old granddaughter, one man making a holiday donation to bee preservation in his family's name, another member taking the book to her circle group for a unit on spirituality and nature--to name a few responses. My own appreciation led me to order copies for several friends as gifts, each of whom loved the book as well.I do want to indicate, for those who might consider using the book as an Advent study, that it breaks with the format of traditional Advent books; it is not organized overtly around Advent themes, scripture, stories. For me, this was an opportunity for creativity, and we wove in scriptures and poems about darkness and nature, material from Barbara Brown Taylor's Learning to Walk in the Dark, art and music.I would recommend this book as a meaningful read anytime, as now more than ever we need to be reminded to abandon ourselves "to the ever-present, unstoppable current of Love that carries all things to radiant wholeness."(74)Dr. Pat Saxon

This book is such a gift and I am so thankful to be reading it. I think this book goes beyond a traditional advent book in that it is really a book that speaks to anyone who is going through or has gone through a time of winter in their own lives, it speaks of why we need a Christ. The animals have so much to teach us. I feel that God is really using this book in my life and I have sent copies to many of my friends. This book is appropriate for children but is not a children's book, I am doing the readings with my own children (ages 9,12 and 14) and they are engaged with the material but the book is very engaging and illustrative for adults. The book is incredibly well researched(as someone who is interested in the natural world and science I have learned a lot reading this book), beautifully written and speaks of great spiritual truths that cross generational and developmental divides. The artwork is amazing, the prose is engaging and beautifully written and it warms my heart and brings me closer to God. I feel this book can speak to so many people and it is really a great gift. Even if it is past "advent" in terms of the liturgical year this is an excellent book to get for cold winter days or for people who are grieving or struggling. I know I will come back to it again and again.

I have never read a book even remotely like this. Suffused with religious feeling throughout it is,for 24 of its 26 chapters entirely about a variety of animals familiar to the author near her homein a northern part of the middle west. More particularly it is how they prepare for winterduring, mostly, the fall season until winter fully settles in, and how these creaturs prepareto stay alive until spring arrives. Ms. Boss has a genius for making these creaturesseem like our friends. And each creature has his or her own fine illustration. After securingmy copy I bought eight more for friends and relatives.
