Review

“Professor Chandra is as acerbic and unbending a curmudgeon as one could wish to find scowling from the pages of a novel. Brilliant, pompous, and baffled by the world outside his Cambridge study, Chandra is forced on a reluctant quest to America to find himself and his family. Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss is searingly funny, uplifting, and wonderful.”—Helen Simonson, New York Times bestselling author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand and The Summer Before the War“There’s a long tradition of trying (and failing) to describe the spiritual search and the ineffable mystery without sounding like a pretentious snob or a sappy Pollyanna. Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss manages to pull it off. The book tackles perennially difficult and deep questions with humor and humanity, beautiful writing, and a page-turning story line. I gave myself over to Professor Chandra’s journey as he opens himself to self-examination, family healing, and a more courageous experience of being alive.”—Elizabeth Lesser, New York Times bestselling author of Broken Open and co-founder, Omega Institute“I loved this beautiful, beautiful book. It’s tender and compassionate, it’s written with exquisite care and verve, and it’s so so so funny.”—Marian Keyes, internationally bestselling author of Angels and Last Chance Saloon “A smart, funny, generous story about an eminent Indian economist who comes of age, finally, at seventy . . . comic and heartfelt, bracing and moving.”—Susan Rieger, author of The Heirs“By turns charming and witty, [Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss] is an effortless, uplifting read that has many pertinent observations to make about family relationships.”—Daily Mail, “Best New Fiction” “This brilliant and eloquent novel . . . is a sort of Zen satire in which tolerance and understanding mingle with hilarious criticisms of contemporary mores. . . . A wonderful read.”—The Mail on Sunday “Uplifting literature, or up-lit as it’s called by publishers, is dominating the bestseller charts. . . . One of the funniest . . . is Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss by Rajeev Balasubramanyam. . . . Beneath the comedy lie serious concerns. Wellness, capitalism, mollycoddled minds intolerant of political difference: Balasubramanyam’s issues are current.”—The Sunday Times“Balasubramanyam sets Chandra on a journey through his hardest feelings, working through the anger and emotional ineptitude that too often conceal his infinite love for his family. At first, Chandra’s children take even his self-blame for selfishness, but subtle changes in his introspection make for a big outward shift. With humor and emotional agility, Balasubramanyam writes a feel-good story that leaves room for feeling bad.”—Booklist “Rajeev Balasubramanyam wields considerable humor, the perfect antidote to our polarized and exhausting present, while crafting a tender and thoughtful tale. This is an absolute gem of a book.”—Shelf Awareness

About finding your way always. No matter what life is all about turning the corner and adjusting to changes and managing family and working on ourselves and learning forgiveness and self care. Life is never settled.

Professor Chandrasekhar is an economics professor at Cambridge University. A seeming perpetual runner-up in the yearly awarding of the Nobel Prize in Economics, Chandra lives a quiet and dissatisfying life in Cambridge, divorced from his wife and estranged from his three grown children. He's almost 70 years old, with only professional accomplishments to keep his spirit warm. He's a man in need of a positive change, even though he doesn't seem to know he's in need. Poor, poor Chandra.Chandra is the main character in British author Rajeev Balasubramanyam new novel, "Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss". "Chandra" is another book in a genre popularised by Helen Simonson, where gentle and quirky people (who usually seem to be British) change their lives while also changing the lives of those around them.Rajeev Balasubramanyam's writing is first-rate in his novel. The characters are fully drawn with nuance and if the three estranged children seem familiar, well, their type seems to populate our world. The three are searching for their places in society and their father, who loves them deeply, cannot help them. He's as lost as they are. What it takes is a visit to Esalen and some understanding words from people he meets along the way. "Self help" turns into "helping others" and Chandra is not so in need by his 70th birthday and the book's end. This is a beautifully written book with love as the current that runs through all the characters.

This is a fun and frothy novel, quick to read with just enough insightfulness to have the word "wise" frequently bandied about in reviews. While I enjoyed the writing, which was crisp and flowing, it wasn't, to my mind, an impactful story. I preferred "A Man Called Ove" and "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" in the "grumpy old men" sub-genre of general fiction. These other works gave more to me as a reader - Ove in the unexpected depth of characterization and Pettigrew in the unexpectedly romantic plot line. That being said, all journeys are different and "Chandra" focuses upon the relationships between parents and children, with the interesting twist of a reflection on Indian parenting (which is an experience relatable to those of us who've grown up in very culturally traditional homes.). For me, the story would have benefitted from more insight into how colonialism influenced Chandra's parents and how it affected Chandra himself. An exploration of these themes would have given greater depth to this novel.Overall, this book is charming, by turns funny and touching. It is clearly destined to be popular in bookclubs and during the summer season as a beach book. Since sources recommended this to readers of "Ove" and "Major Pettigrew", I was slightly disappointed, expecting more out of this book. However, it is a pleasant way to spend one's leisure time, though this is probably not a book whose themes and characters will stick with me for years to come.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for a copy of the book. It deals with insight and enlightenment which can change long-held beliefs and relationships for the better. It was not the light-hearted, amusing book I was expecting. 3.5 stars The story gives us insight into our self-image may be a drawback into seeing our true selves and how much more we could be. Professor Chandra’s work has been built around his life as one of the world’s foremost experts in economics. He is egotistical, argumentative and a workaholic. He expects each year to win the Nobel Prize which he feels at age 69 would validate his life and profession. His wife has left him for another man and moved from England to California and he is estranged from his three children. After being upset the Nobel Prize for Economics has again been awarded to others, he pretends he doesn’t care. Following an accident, he is in hospital where the doctor tells him he needs to take it easy and ‘follow his bliss.’ Chandra decides to go to California and work as a visiting economics lecturer. He tries to reconnect with his ex-wife, Jean, and their troubled teenaged daughter. Another daughter is travelling and will have no contact with Chandra or let him know where she is. His son is in Hong Kong running a very successful business based on the concept that positive thinking will bring financial rewards. After an altercation with Jean’s second husband, he is manipulated to spend time at a New Age self-help retreat. He begins to gain a more positive attitude towards himself and change his attitude to how he relates to others. He feels that his own father’s relentless pushing him to succeed has affected his life and work. He believes he has caused his own children to try to keep up with him and as a result, they have rebelled against his economic beliefs and lifestyle. He visits his son in Hong Kong, and finally, the entire family reconnects at an isolated meditation retreat in the mountains for Christmas. It was pleasing to see the changes in Chandra and how his family now understood his past attitudes and became more accepting of him. The family had also transformed and relationships were better. Chandra could now reassess his life and establish a better future for himself after returning to his home in England. I would have liked more humour between all the economic discussions and arguments and all the self-help classes and meditation, This was a well-written book which might cause the reader to reflect on their own attitudes towards themselves, relationships with others and their careers.
