Actually, I own the hardcover book that I bought years ago. I saw this as a Kindle deal and purchased it so that I could have the book wherever and whenever I wanted. I thought Mr. Middlebrook's recounting of the Falklands conflict was well researched and reported. Told mostly from the British point of view, it recounts the events leading up to the conflict. I found it interesting that the RN finds itself probably in a worse condition then they were in the 80's and Argentina still hasn't given up their claim. With the proposed purchase of a helicopter landing ship from the USA and signals from the current US government are we about to get a repeat in the next year.
I found this a great read that focused on the Brits, Falklands people and in some the way the Argentines as opposed to just the leaders. I attended a briefing by the Operations Officer of the Coventry while I was in the Navy. The briefing was excellent but the book had more details that he did not share with us that definitely had a impact on their sinking.
This is one of the better books available on the Falklands War of 1982. Martin Middlebrook does an outstanding job of giving some of the background context needed to understand the causes and calculations/miscalculations of the parties involved. There is sufficient detail in the book for all but the most ardent war buff. The text is easy to read and is interspersed with comments by the participants which add a personal touch to Middlebrook's account. The lack of perspective from the Argentinian side, although regrettable, is understandable giving the nature of the junta in charge the the raw feelings of the losing side.There are two weaknesses in the text: 1) the lack of detailed maps. I would love for a history to have one moderate sized map with sufficient detail of the terrain being fought over, it does greatly assist the reader in understanding of the conflict(I would even being willing to pay for more that feature!); 2) Middlebrook as a habit of mentioning an event and then saying he will discuss it in detail later. He does, but this method of writing does sometimes detract from the text.
Mr. Middlebrook takes us on a journey to the Falklands war where we see the events through the eyes of those who were actually there - not only the high level commanders but also the ones who filled the lowest billets and the non combatants, too. Hard to put it down - I just wanted to keep reading.
Remember hearing about the far and following itvia newspapers now great to read about the finer nuances of the battlefield and planning citizens input great to see honor where honor due esp to the Argentinian forces as well
A concise and very readable account of the Falklands war with enough detail without being anal. Mainly from a British perspective but then the Argies didn't want to talk yet. Good comprehensive maps and battle layouts. Worth a read.
As a newcomer to this conflict I feel very much informed. Each key event, decision and action is well described. The accounts from those who were there add colour and life to the narrative. Highly recommend this book.
Brilliantly written and meticulously researched.Middlebrook brings the war to the reader, warts and all.The best account of the Falklands War I have read.
