The first two IQ novels were unique and interesting. This third one seems to just be a filler - like the author was required to write three novels due to a contract. Not worth my time or money. Won't be continuing with this author.

Ide created a compelling backstory for Isiah and loyal readers have watched him grow up in the first two books of the series. His journey began with small jobs, Isiah dealing with the loss of his brother, and introduced us to his friends. A shout out for Deronda.Wrecked takes this series to a new and darker level. Not only is Grace searching for her mother, Sarah, a group of ruthless former military prison guards is desperate to find her. Grace's father, long dead and a former military man, was in possession of compromising photographs which could not only ruin these men but send them to jail and Sarah possesses them. Not knowing that Grace has had no contact with her mother, they are as determined to isolate Grace as Isiah is to keep her safe.Between the brutality, the reader is able to follow Isiah's band of quirky friends who wrestle with familiar problems: their bills, overbearing mothers-in-law, resentments and all the rest.Although the situations where Isiah is able to win battles between seasoned military men armed with the latest weapons, including drones, with a slingshot may be a bit of a stretch, the author doesn't veer off into pure fantasy. Reading that IQ is headed for television is both good and bad. It's fun imagining what the characters look like rather than knowing. But all in all, Ide has created a great cast and this reader will be watching.

So, here’s IQ again, in Wrecked, the third entry in Joe Ide’s terrific new series of detective novels. It’s an adventure that’s even more outrageous than the first two. Oh, you haven’t met? IQ is Isaiah Quintabe of Long Beach, California. The private investigator. You might just want to call him Sherlock from the Hood. He’s some kind of genius.Ten years after Abu GhraibHere’s the deal. These four guys were all in Iraq, at Abu Ghraib. And, yes, they all took part in the really awful stuff that happened there. Torture, of course, including waterboarding. Rape, too. And only one of them seems to have had the slightest misgivings about it. Now, it’s more than ten years later, and one of those guys—the CIA officer who gave the orders—has built a “security” company like Blackwater and become a billionaire in the process. (“He was even richer than his hero, Donald Trump.”) So, he’s got even more to lose than the others if the truth about what they did at Abu Ghraib comes out. There were more photos, it turns outThat’s why all four are back together. Because Walczak, the billionaire, has just gotten a blackmail demand from a woman named Sarah that he used to know. It turns out that Sarah’s husband, who’d been at Abu Ghraib too, had taken lots of pictures of all the really, really bad stuff they did. The woman wants a million dollars or she’ll release the photos online. And Walczak is convinced she’ll do that even if he does pay the money. So, naturally, they’ve got to kill her, right?Sherlock from the Hood takes on another outrageous caseThe problem is, they don’t have a clue where she is. Sarah disappeared ten years ago. Not even her daughter, Grace, knows where she’s hiding out. Which is a problem for her, because she really wants to get back in touch with her mother. And that leads Grace to contact Isaiah. She’s heard IQ is really good at finding missing people. And he’s willing to do just about anything for Grace, because, well, he’s seen her around the hood and he’s got a crush on her.All of which explains, more or less, how Isaiah and Grace end up on a collision course with Walczak and the other bad guys. And, this being the kind of book it is, we know there will be fireworks along the way. Yes, sorry to say, violence. Really ugly violence. It’s even there in the Prologue. But don’t let that turn you off this book. It’s lots of fun, too.Again, outrageous charactersThe IQ novels are full of outrageous characters, and Joe Ide outdoes himself in Wrecked. Here, for example, is Junior, a drug dealer with a peculiar attachment to the English language. Listen:** “Are you and I correlated or do we coexist in separate realities?” (Translation: Junior hasn’t figured out that the attractive woman who’s taken a seat next to him is hitting on him.)** “You thought you could recapitulate my premises and not forfeit the residue?” (Translation: somebody stole a bag of money from Junior’s apartment and he wants it back.)Then there are the two thirteen-year-olds from the Carver Middle School Science Club, Phaedra Harris and Gilberto Cervantes. These two kids talk like Oxford dons (but without the accent). As Isaiah observes, “Phaedra was obviously smart but not like the smart kids on TV. She wasn’t acting like an adult. It was as if she was an adult . . . If it wasn’t for her age, she could have hosted Good Morning America.”Then there’s Chester C. Babbitt, the bow-tie-wearing psychopath who manufactures knives.Well, you get the point. I won’t go on. And to explain how all these characters (and more) fit together in this story would spoil the fun. Read the book. If you like detective fiction, you’ll be glad you did. There's no Dr. Watson for this Sherlock from the Hood, and no deerstalker cap, but you'll love the guy's mind.

I agree with Ide's critics' good opinions of "IQ" and his friends as havebeen developed here. I'm not crazy about the love story, which is obviouslystuck on to "humanize" IQ and we really don't need it. I would grant lots ofpraise for Book 3's use of the Abu Ghraib setting. That's a new one for thisgenre. He lets us know the meaning of pain and I could hardly stand to readsome of the scenes, but it's very well done and I'm ready to buy Book 4.

Joe Ide's third novel in his IQ series is simply great. His writing has reached another level, and its meditations on revenge and violence will long give me something to think about. If you haven't heard of this series before - think of a modern day young Sherlock Holmes... only he's a black kid from East Long Beach that takes cases mostly from his neighborhood and is paid whatever they can give him. Gangs and drugs are still a massive problem, and Isaiah Quintabe (IQ) has to nimbly navigate this environment with Dodson, a former street hustler who is more man of action and money than Watson was to Holmes. In this novel, they both have to help a young woman find her missing mother, as well avoid some of the worst enemies you would want. The bad guys are as evil as you can imagine, but Ide still manages to give them a sliver of humanity that only makes them more horrifying in contrast. Previous secondary characters that I had written off initially as jokes have slowly become interesting and fully human people in this world. Twists and turns happen in natural ways, and revenge is revealed as an empty satisfaction. I cannot wait to see where Joe Ide takes us next.

This one seems more loosely plotted, and a swirl of characters that can be hard to keep track of.I suspect it was edited in a hurry to rush the third book out while Joe is still hot. A shame really; another rewrite or two would have resulted in a much better book.

Starting with the first book," IQ" this series is so amazing. I have read some of the books several times. Complex, funny, and a darn good read, I wonder how the author has invented so much to wonder at in almost every paragraph. Do yourself a big favor and buy all books. "Wrecked" is the third in the series and is so amazing. I can't wait until the 4th book!
