I have two different advisor "salesmen" trying to sell me a variable annuity. After listening to them I kept getting more convinced they were pushing products that were not the best investment. I had purchased this ebook a while back and read it again. Thanks for the clear advice and warning!
Don't consider investing in a variable annuity without reading this book first. Pros and Cons contains good basic information on the construction and use of variable annuities. I believe there is MUCH more to know about these instruments but this book is a good starting point/intro. A highly recommended read.
This succinctly written treatise gets right to heart of the matter, and is very good in focusing on what questions one needs to ask before considering these complex instruments as a part of your portfolio.The author presents a solid framework for analyzing an annuity, weighing their considerable costs against the benefits that one can expect to receive. He rightly points out that many people are sold a bill of goods with inadequate explanation and disclosures about the costs and associated risks in owning these instruments.Follow the money - in this case the very high commissions and annual expenses these instruments command - and you understand why these are being sold. The author pierces the shroud of convoluted legalisms in annuity contracts, and provides a clear picture of the tradeoffs between risk and reward (i.e. cost and benefits). As with all of life's endeavors - there is no free lunch.
Outstanding overview of annuities including what to watch out for, who they are for, and who they are not for. Includes scripts for questions to ask your broker as well as a complete break-down of all possible fees - both visible and hidden - that can apply. Great book!
Anyone considering buying any type of variable annuity should read this before doing so. It is simply written, concise and chock full of useful information. I read it quickly and feel that I am armed with enough information to make a good decision. The author gives you the tools to ask pointed questions in order to make an informed decision. This is so worth the price! I have a feeling that annuity salespeople are not too happy about this book! Tell all your friends about it!
