Review

Full-color illustrations will make you want to cut them out and frame them for a bright bedroom or an elegant dining-room wall. (Grand Rapids Press 2009-06-28)Exquisite photographs. (Rob Mooy Kingston This Week 2009-06-18)English Roses is a love letter to roses, written by David Austin, the Englishman who has been breeding new roses with old looks for decades. Breezily written and admiringly light on self-promotion, Austin's book is filled with beautiful close-ups of his roses and the old roses they are descended from. There's plant history for the serious rosarian, but gardeners who just like to dream as they peruse big pages filled with luscious photos also will enjoy the book. It's a fine tribute to a man who has spent his life bringing old-fashioned grace and perfume back to a plant that too often lost its scent and natural beauty as breeders pursued the perfect bloom. (Mary Jane Smetanka Minneapolis Star Tribune 2010-01-05)This book practically leaped off the shelf into my arms. If you love roses, this truly is a sumptuous book! If you can recall David Austin's popular original book published in 1993 you will have some idea of what is in store in this newest offering. Not only is the subject matter superb, but the Howard Rice and Andrew Lawson photography is amazing... Drool. (Donald McClure Picton County Weekly News 2008-11-28)Anyone with an affection for roses will be very pleased with David Austin's new book.... Encyclopedic in scope and somewhat literary....this book is basically everything you could want to know about English roses. (Ginny McGraw Washington Gardener)Austin achieved great success as a hybridizer of his so-called English Roses, which possess a combination of alluring traits found in antique varieties and modern hybrid teas.... [He] explains the ancestry and qualities of his roses, presenting 80 roses in six subgroups that include more recent introductions. Only roses that have proven to be vigorous and disease free make the cut. Succinct descriptions sum each rose's attributes, from growing habits and overall shape to luscious fragrance, flower form, foliage, and origin of the plant's name. And breathtaking photographs illustrate the reasons English roses are beloved by gardeners everywhere. Rose lovers will find Austin's personal observations regarding the development of these exquisite flowers mesmerizing, while his candor regarding a rose's faults is noteworthy and will surely help a gardener select roses for any given situation or climate. Novices will appreciate a final chapter with useful tips on culture and maintenance. (Alice Joyce Booklist)Gorgeous photographs. (Marilyn K. Alaimo Chicago Botanic Garden)Roses truly are a sight to behold. Each one seems so unique, and they are all classified in this informative book, including their fragrances and appearance. It is the sheer number of roses that make the book all the more interesting... The English Roses is a great book for the occasional gardener or serious one. David Austen has created something amazing with his roses, just as he has done with this book. (Shelf Life)It would be easy to argue that no other individual has contributed more to modern roses than breeder extraordinaire David Austin. (Stephen Westcott-Gratton Metro (Toronto, Ottawa) 2009-06-11)It would be easy to argue that no other individual has contributed more to modern roses than breeder extraordinaire David Austin. Here, he tells the tales of more than 80 of his English rose hybrids from the beginnings ('Constance Spry' 1961), up to and including several of his 2005 introductions (my favourite: Gentle Hermione). This book is not so much a practical book on growing roses as a catalog of the English roses up to a certain point in time. It updates an older edition that I also bought and enjoyed. There are some photographs of roses in the garden environment and these are gorgeous, but most images are of the roses from a single bush to illustrate what the flowers of the rose looks like. In some ways, these images are misleading, because as the davidaustinroses website indicates, the colors of these roses change based on climate and season. In short, what you see is probably not going to be exactly what you get. Also, Austin prides these roses as being good garden plants, so it seems odd that images of them as garden plants are not offered more frequently. If what you are looking for is like a visual bouquet, or if you just love looking at the English roses' flowers--and there are many who do!!--this may be a great book for you.Other reviewers have mentioned that there isn't too much updated in terms of how to grow the roses or even the history, although the English Musk class division is either new for this edition or greatly expanded in breeding since the last one.

My book arrived today in excellent condition! The photos in the book are lovely and the information about the roses is excellent! It was almost like being in a rose garden, but without the sweet scent! I really love it!

I love roses, and David Austins are no exception. For me this book comes into its own in spring when I'm re-evaluating my rose garden and wondering which rose to plant. It is such an invaluable resource because it contains a comprehensive number of David Austin Roses, and notes the varieties which have been superseded. The photos are true to colour and descriptions accurate. This is a book which will always be in my possession not only to enjoy as a resource but also to ponder at the time of the rose growing season when I just yearn for my roses to start flowering once again, and I know I have two to three months before flowering starts for the next season.

I'm a dedicated rosarian, and love pouring over catalogs and books about roses. This book allowed me to indulge my senses, but unfortunately, also empty my wallet. How can you not linger over these lucious David Austin roses, and not yearn to have more. Also, liked reading David Austin's overview of rose history and his attempts to develop a rose with all of the "charm" of the old fashioned roses, along with the better qualities in the newer roses.

With all this talk (by David Austin) of breeding a more attractive flower on a more attractive shrub, why didn't he include a picture of a mature shrub of each rose he was talking about? The book does have beautiful closeups of many, many, (I think 71) of his roses. And... there are pictures in the other sections of some of the rose bushes... but it could have been much more helpful if there were also a picture of each shrub, not just the close-up of the flower. But not to be forgotton, other than the beautiful flowers and the missing shrubs, David Austin's history of the English roses, etc, makes for interesting and educational reading.

Love it
