First, this being a compilation of items that may have appeared previously in Fine Woodworking is a good thing, as that assures the content quality. Second, some have commented negatively about the print format (large book and paper grade). I view this as an asset, as with the typically low Amazon price, one is not apt to protect this book as a collector item! It is meant to be read, put down & then opened wherever and read again! It is meant to be taken into your shop, to try some of the techniques!I'm a very experienced woodworker-well over 45 years now, having served a 4 year carpenter's apprenticeship, then serving 15 years as a journeyman, before leaving the trade to start a manufacturing business (still there). I have a very well equipped shop and spend my spare time there. I have built most of the furniture in our home and also many for others. In this volume, I've found much that is still fresh to me, for just handtool users, for powertool users and for hybrid woodworkers. Cheap price, so who cares if it gets some tattered pages, saw dust in the binding or stains on the cover or pages! It is meant to give you ideas and if a single idea saves me from screwing up a $50 piece of lumber, then the $16 Amazon price has paid me quite the return!

Almost too much information overload. large book (10 1/2"x13 1/2"). Has 525 pages, printed on newspaper thickness paper. The content section is well itemized to almost anything wood related you can think of, Good diagrams, Good black and white pictures. Has front and back page areas to make notes. Covers the workshop, Wood (types, strengths, choosing), All types of woodworking, carving, wood tools (hand and power), Routing, gluing, clamping technique, joints(types, strength and weaknesses), molding, milling, jigs, sharpening tools, scraping, Sanding, Finishing and refinishing technique, Making tables-dressers-chairs-cabinets-bed frames-drawers and more, honing your skills, LOTS OF IDEAS, TROUBLE SHOOTING and TIPS (too many to list here). They tried to put as much info in here as they could, and they did a good job.

Excellent book, I knocked off one star because it is hard to read or store on the bookshelf due to the large size of the book and small size of the print. I would have gladly paid more to have it in a smaller form factor and larger print even if it required me to purchase in two separate volumes

This book has some great information but whats up with the formatting. Paper quality seems on the thin side, not a durable reference for the shop and the text seems a bit small. I feel that the design takes away from the quality of the information. Not one of Tauntons best. Just an "OK" addition to my woodworking library.

If you only get one book on woodworking, it should be this one. It covers a huge array of topics in an easy-to-read format, and I routinely return to this book for reference. It is not printed on the most durable of papers, though, so you have to keep it dry and protected from the elements...and stains, varnishes, oils, etc. All in all, I really dig this book.

I think this book is one of the best published on working with wood, but it does have flaws.The pictures are not good. They were probably taken for publication on slick paper, like Fine Woodworking Magazine, and were not changed when they went to newsprint for this book. Newsprint requires a much lighter photograph with less contrast to print properly. In woodworking, photographs are important in understanding the process being described. “One picture is worth a thousand words” is no joke.Nonetheless, the pictures are not totally black. They are just hard to decipher in some cases.The size of the book in inconvenient, making it hard to read and hard to put on a bookshelf.Now for the good part. The information is nonpareil. I can’t think of another book on woodworking where so much information – both basic and advanced – is compiled in one place. While a bit of the information may be questionable, after all it is a series of articles expressing each person’s point of view on how to do something, the vast majority of the techniques and ideas presented are excellent.One article in particular is worth the price of the book. Fine Woodworking tested the strength of wood joints. They were all glued with Tightbond 3 and the testing procedure was first-rate. The half lap joint was the strongest tested, which surprised me. The complete list is remarkable. The half lap took over 1000 pounds of force to break the joint. Many other joints are tested and the results will improve your woodworking.Get the book.AD2

Excellent guide for the begginer or long time woodworker. Great info on all facets from wood features and furniture design! Great on a Kindle as I can increase the font size and enlarge the drawings.

What I liked. The book from what I did read was informative. What I didn’t like is the books pages were very thin like tissue paper so you have to turn the pages gently as to not tear them and the font, xx small I looked it up. I have to use a magnifying glass to read and that was too hard to follow. It was a waste of money and I won’t read anymore.

The poems are at times fierce, at times solemn, celebrating culture, family, nature, life. The essays are every bit as illuminating and I’ll turn to them often for wisdom and humor. This morning I started my day with Adrian C. Louis’ poem, “The Hermit’s Diary.” Here’s the first stanza, “Age has withered my rage. The roiling, molten core of my youth has cooled into dull, cold metal. Nevertheless, sometimes I grab a butter knife & dance around the kitchen, threatening the sluggish Mr. Coffee machine.” And on it goes. This poem will feed me all day.

As a moderately experienced traveler, I was looking in this book for some clever techniques that could elevate my game to the heights of (almost) "world's smartest".Indeed, the table of contents was promising, seeming to cover all the bases. So, the book looked comprehensive. And from a veteran travel writer for Nat Geo, too. It had to be good.But it wasn't. The advice in all sections is very basic. Even newbies who know how to read the fine print on their documents, and then exercise old-fashioned American common sense, won't need this book.And I do mean "American". The book is entirely and solely for US residents. You want to know about rail travel? There's a comment or two about Europe, but the section on rail is really about Amtrak. If you're not traveling in the US, the book loses much of its limited utility.It also reflects on Mr. Elliott's role as a travel ombudsman, so the best advice in the book is how to recover from abuse by airlines, hotels and other travel industry suppliers. If you've been treated badly or lost money, you might learn something about how to seek restitution.The book had promise and could still be helpful to a US-based tourist who's timid about booking a domestic vacation. International? Forget it. Anyone with more gumption and farther horizons can get better travel advice in books by Rob Sanger or Edward Hasbrouck or even off the net.

While the book is easy to read, it is also very repetitive in the advice it gives. To me, almost all of it is common sense and can be summarized in a few sentences, no matter what topic the author talks about (e.g. booking flight, hotels, rental cars, cruises):1. Always compare prices for everything (flights, hotels, rental cars, ...) from different sources before you book.2. Always read the fine print of any contract you sign - it's important to need to know the details.3. There is no solution that works for everyone (e.g. not one way to book hotels).I don't travel a lot, so I was hoping to get some good advice, but I feel like I already knew ~90%. Also, there was little concrete advice. Most chapters give an somewhat broad overview over different options and end with "you have to figure out what works for you". I liked the chapter about Loyalty Programs (bottom line: they are probably not worth it), but that's not worth buying the book for.

I don't travel frequently, but when I do, I love to do so as efficiently as possible. That means with a minimum of luggage but with everything I need. Love hints on how to get the best values on tickets, hotels, car rentals. And, if issues do arise (and they do on almost every trip, I like suggestions on how to resolve them as easily as possible with as few "additional steps" as necessary. This book covers it all. And it's lightweight enough that I can find a pocket in my suitcase or carry on in which to slip it.

Years ago, "getting there is half the fun" was the advertising slogan for Cunard Lines, but both Cunard and the slogan have fallen on hard times -- hence, this book.Much of this book is common sense for semi-experienced travelers, but I found plenty of useful, concise, accurate information (based on my experience). The author has helped people navigate the Travel Environment in his work as contributor and consumer advocate for National Geographic's travel magazine, and he runs a useful website. Realistically, some coverage isn't nearly as complete as you may want -- it's a small book -- but it can help set your mind in motion. Topics range from health and safety (and the TSA) to making efficient complaints to managing cash flow and keeping records to surviving a sales talk. The book seems useful both for beginners and fairly experienced travelers, and designed for reasonably well-off but budget-conscious voyagers rather than someone planning to hitch-hike across Asia in twelve weeks. The bibliography is a bit sparse, and organization lacks some finesse, with little tid-bits of information scattered all over the place -- I'd read each chapter even if you've found what you need. Some hints, while obvious, are useful reminders (like saying you won't be at your most coherent while angrily calling the airline about a sudden delay after being sleep-deprived). The author also does a good job advising what you'll just need to put up with, who will be most likely to help when you need it (and why your courtesy helps), and why it's largely up to you to manage your enjoyment even if you have grounds to complain.I'd suggest airport bookstores sell this book (BTW I recently found the LAX airport bookstore outstanding, which made even a 17 hour delay worthwhile). I'll bet the book would appeal to frustrated travelers who wish they'd seen it before leaving home. Travel websites could also put a "hint of the day" as part of their headliner and if they do, this book could provide just the ticket.I would suggest putting this one on your electronic reader so you can keep it on your person without the bulk and weight of the printed version.

In a weak moment, or maybe it was several weak moments, of forgetfulness, I wound up with three or four books on Azaleas. While I do that more often than I should admit, it never seems that any one is that "one too many". This is well written, not overly scholarly, and nicely presented. Like most books on a subject, it covers a lot of common ground but has a few tidbits of information that the others lack. I guess that you can have too many azaleas in your yard, but they add such nice color, and permanent color, to the shade landscape in the south that they are a plant that comes quickly to mind.

Azaleas is not just another "pretty" coffee table book but one that is intended for the serious, scientific study and enjoyment of the much-loved azalea. While the book does lack in color photographs, the information provided of both the history and breeding of these plants is detailed and informative. Not intended for light "beach reading", this text addresses a gardener's concerns from propagation to the health of azaleas. The information on the origins and the different varieties of azaleas is fascinating and throughly researched.
