Unicorns are real. At least, I think they are.Dragons are definitely real. I have seen them. Chupacabras exist, too. Also Sasquatch. And mermaids—though they are not what you think. But back to unicorns. When I, Professor Mito Fauna, was a young man, I lived in the foothills of Peru. One day, there were rumors in my town of a unicorn in danger, far up in the mountains. At that instant I founded the Unicorn Rescue Society—I was the only member—and set off to save the unicorn. When I finally located it, though, I saw that it was not a unicorn, but rather a qarqacha, the legendary two-headed llama of the Andes. I was very slightly disappointed. I rescued it anyway. Of course. Now, many years later, there are members of the Unicorn Rescue Society all around the world. We are sworn to protect all the creatures of myth and legend. Including unicorns! If we ever find them! Which I’m sure we will! But our enemies are powerful and ruthless, and we are in desperate need of help. Help from someone brave and kind and curious, and brave. (Yes, I said “brave” twice. It’s important.) Will you help us? Will you risk your very life to protect the world’s mythical creatures? Will you join the Unicorn Rescue Society? I hope so. The creatures need you. Defende Fabulosa! Protege Mythica!  —Mito Fauna, DVM, PhD, EdD, etc.  Chapter OneElliot Eisner was lying, facedown, on the pavement in front of his new house, in his new town, in New Jersey. The morning was clear and fine. Kids were walking past on their way to school, kicking red and yellow leaves. It smelled of fall. Why was Elliot lying facedown on the pavement? He wasn’t sure. He had opened his front door, stepped on something, and then gone toppling headfirst down the steps. Elliot pushed himself up and turned around to see what he had tripped on.On his front step was a small package, wrapped in brown paper. He got to his feet and walked over to the package. No address. No stamps. Just a name, scrawled in brown ink. Weird. He examined the name on the package. It was his name. Elliot had had a strange day yesterday. It had been his first day at his new school. He’d made a friend, Uchenna Devereaux. She was odd. She kinda dressed like a punk rocker, she made up random songs about nothing at all, and she had a strong desire to put herself, and Elliot, in mortal danger. All that said, she was funny and she was brave and Elliot liked her. They had rescued a young Jersey Devil—which was supposed to be an imaginary creature, but definitely was not imaginary. It seemed to have adopted them. Finally, a terrifying teacher at their school, named Professor Fauna, had invited them to join a secret organization: the Unicorn Rescue Society. Its mission was to save mythical creatures from danger. So yeah, it had been a strange day.Now Elliot was staring at a mysterious package that had been left on his doorstep. For him.He tore open the paper. A book stared up at him. The Country of Basque.“What?” Elliot said out loud, to no one.Why had someone left him a book? On his doorstep? And who had left it? And couldn’t he just have a normal, not-at-all dangerous second day at South Pines Elementary? Please? He sighed, tucked the book under his arm, threw his backpack over his shoulder, and started off to school.  Chapter TwoUchenna Devereaux normally left her house with one shoe untied, half her homework still under the bed upstairs, playing air guitar, and singing a song she’d made up that morning in the shower. But not today. She opened her front door and looked down her street in both directions before slipping out into the cool autumn morning. She put her backpack over her shoulders, pulled the straps tight, and began walking, warily, to school. Yesterday had been a weird day.She had made a new friend named Elliot. He wasn’t exactly cool—he got nervous easily, he memorized entire books about things that could kill him, and he was definitely not rock-and-roll. But he was smart and funny, and Uchenna liked him. Also, they’d met a Jersey Devil and been invited by the school’s weirdest teacher to join a secret society. This secret society had very rich and very powerful enemies: the Schmoke brothers, two billionaires who owned businesses all over the world, and half their little town. Also, Uchenna and Elliot and that weird teacher may have broken into the Schmoke brothers’ mansion.Okay, they definitely did.Which was why Uchenna was being so vigilant this morning on her walk to school. As she turned the corner from her block onto the main street, she glanced over her shoulder. A few blocks away lay the wealthiest neighborhood in town—where the Schmoke brothers’ mansion was. Beyond that, in the distance, she could just make out the towering smokestacks of the Schmoke Industries power plant, billowing black plumes into the air. She—FTHUMP!Uchenna sat down hard on her rear end. A small, thin boy with curly brown hair was lying on his back on the sidewalk, staring up into space. An open book lay on the sidewalk behind him.“Elliot!” Uchenna exclaimed.“Ow,” said Elliot.“I didn’t see you there!”“That’s good. The alternative would have been that you did see me there and ambushed me on purpose.”Uchenna laughed and got to her feet. “Come on. Let’s get to school.”Elliot lay unmoving on the ground. “I don’t think so. Today’s been pretty messed up already. School’s only going to make it worse.”Uchenna grabbed Elliot by the wrist and pulled him to his feet. She scooped up The Country of Basque and handed it to him. “Let’s go. However messed up today’s going to be, it’ll be better if we face it together.”As Elliot brushed off his khaki pants, he squinted at Uchenna. “Your positivity disgusts me.”Uchenna grinned, threw her arm around Elliot’s shoulders, and dragged him toward school. Chapter ThreeElliot and Uchenna sat at the far end of one of the long tables in the school cafeteria, waiting for the morning bell to ring. Kids were streaming in the double doors, finding their friends, laughing, clowning, discussing whatever they’d seen on television or online the night before. Not Elliot and Uchenna, though. Elliot was telling Uchenna about the mysterious book on his doorstep. “I haven’t read much of it yet. Just the first five chapters.”“You read the first five chapters between your house and the corner where we knocked into each other? That’s one block!”“They’re short chapters. And I read pretty fast.”“So, what did you learn?”“Well, I learned about the Basque people, the Euskaldunak.”“The AY-oo-SKAL-doo-nak?”“Yeah. They’re kinda amazing. They’re these fierce mountain people, who’ve lived nestled between Spain and France and the sea, for thousands of years. Pretty much every great empire of Europe has tried to conquer them, but no one could.”“They sound awesome.”“Definitely.”“Any idea why you’re reading this book? Or who gave it to you?”“I have two guesses. Both frighten me.”Uchenna shrugged. “You are easily frightened.”“One possibility is the Schmoke brothers.”“Okay,” Uchenna said, “that would frighten me, too. But why would the Schmoke brothers leave you a book?”“No idea. A warning? The other person who could have left it for me is—” At that very moment, the cafeteria doors crashed open, and in strode a tall, wiry man with a black-and-white beard and a shock of hair exploding from his skull. He wore an old tweed suit and shoes that had probably been expensive forty years ago. From under his shaggy eyebrows, his eyes roved the faces of the nearby students—who cowered before him.Which was not surprising, because he looked like he might attack someone. The man’s name was Professor Mito Fauna.“The other possibility,” Elliot continued, subtly gesturing at the man, who was now peering around the cafeteria as if he were looking for his next victim, “is him.” Chapter FourProfessor Fauna’s eyes landed on Uchenna and Elliot, like a predator finding its prey. He began to weave in and out of the lunch tables, making his way toward them. He moved with a crackling, manic energy that made everyone—teachers and kids alike—jump out of his way.He arrived at their table, glancing at the other kids nearby and then running his big brown hands through his wiry hair, making it stand up even straighter.“Buenos días, mis amigos,” Professor Fauna said. He was from Peru, and his voice was rich and rocky and slightly accented. He could easily have played a secret agent in an action movie—if the secret agent had been lost in the wilderness for ten years without a change of clothes or a comb. “I hope you have recovered from our adventures of yesterday.”Every kid at the table turned to stare, first at the professor, and then at Elliot and Uchenna.“Uh, hi, Professor,” said Elliot.“Yup,” added Uchenna quickly. “Doing fine.”Professor Fauna nodded. Then, he hesitated. He began shifting awkwardly from foot to foot. Clearly, he wanted to say something to Uchenna and Elliot, but felt he could not with all the other kids around. He noticed the book that Elliot had been reading. “Ah!” he said. “You received my package! I am glad it did not fall into the wrong hands!”Professor Fauna suddenly seemed to realize how strange that sounded. He looked around. Absolutely every kid within earshot was staring at him. He cleared his throat. “Uh, for example, the, uh, the hands of a clock! Those would be . . . wrong . . . because clocks . . . cannot read!”“What?” both Elliot and Uchenna said at once.“Never mind!” said the professor quickly. “Anyway, I would like to request your attendance after school for a meeting of the, um, club we spoke of yesterday.”One of the kids at the table, a freckly boy named Lucas, asked, “What club, Mr. Fauna? Can I join, too?”“It is the, uh, club for . . . ,” Professor Fauna stammered. “For the history, uh, and the philosophy of . . .”Elliot and Uchenna could see that the professor was struggling to come up with a believable cover story. They both tried to think of the worst, most terrible idea for a club they could, so that none of the other kids would want to come. Unfortunately, they blurted out their ideas at the same time.“Nutrition,” said Uchenna.“Worms,” said Elliot.“What?” said Lucas.“Yes, the Worm-Nutrition Club!” exclaimed Professor Fauna, thrusting a long finger into the air. “We will be discussing how to feed and care for worms.”Some of the kids at the table snickered.“Mostly, we find that they like poop,” the professor added.“Ugh!” someone groaned.“Chicken poop, they like. And duck poop, too. Cat poop, on the other hand—”“They get the idea, Professor,” said Uchenna.Lucas looked positively queasy. “Actually, I have soccer after school.”Professor Fauna beamed at Elliot and Uchenna and then winked. They rolled their eyes. “Come to my office. You know where it is.” He gave them a little salute and then strode away through the cafeteria.A girl leaned toward Uchenna. “You’ve seen his office? I heard he has a torture chamber under the school. Is that true?”Uchenna looked at Elliot. He shrugged.“Something like that,” Uchenna replied.

The Unicorn Rescue Society books are all great and would highly recommend to new readers!! My daughter can't put these down. The story is engaging and fast paced but easy enough to for my daughter to keep up with. She always asks to read more chapter before bed! :)

My daughter was never really into reading until this author came and talked to the kids at her school now she Loves reading his books. This is the 5th book of his shes read and has enjoyed them all so far.

My daughter loves these books and they get her reading! They are proper novels, a bit longer than chapter books, and written in an entertaining style that kids love.

Daughter and granddaughter took turns reading, and both grew a bit bored by the end.

My grandson loves this book & he’s a picky reader so I’m thrilled.

Great series. Keeps my son engaged and eager to read.

The book is great for the price. It arrived on time and was a described. Looks new despite some marking on it. I have great satisfaction overall from using the book.

This excellent book is a combination primer on medical ethics and specific treatment of a number of issues encountered in neurologic practice. The first 5 chapters of the book are an overview of medical ethics that is conventional, very well organized, and written clearly. This section is an excellent sumaary that can be read by virtually all physicians. The next 4 chapters cover issues related to death and dying, again, these chapters can be read profitably by all physicians and are of excellent quality. The remainder of the book is devoted to a series of chapters that probably concern neurologists more than most other physicians, brain death, persistent vegetative states, states of profound paralysis with preserved cognition. These chapters are also excellent. This book is informed by Bernat's dual training in moral philosophy and the fact that he is an active clinician. His approach exemplifies an effort to bring theoretical moral concerns to bear on real clinical problems. All chapters are written clearly and have extensive, recently updated bibliographies. The issues discussed in this book are the concrete practical problems we encounter often as physicians. Bernat's approach is thoughtful and fair, even when discussing controversial issues such as assisted suicide.I recommend this book strongly to all neurologists. This is a volume that you should own. Other physicians will find this book useful as a reference source on the specific neurologic topics and the introductory chapters are an excellent general introduction to medical ethics.

Dr. Foubert tackles the subject matter head-on in this book. He is very upfront and forthcoming about the ramifications of using this addictive product. He deals with how it is currently impacting our society and how it will shape our future. It is a must read for any man and even more importantly, any parents. The war on our children has been a slow, silent battle up to this point. Take the time to really read and comprehend the consequences of what this book so eloquently breaks down for us. It si also important to note that this not some religiously biased perspective that only focuses on Biblical perspective. It is backed with lots of real world experience and scientific data from Christian and non-Christian sources.

I haven't finished the book yet, but certainly not because of any lack in the research or writing. It's simply that the book is so thorough in describing the abusive nature of the pornography industry and the devastating effects of pornography on our families and loved ones, that I can only get through a little bit at a time. As much as I want to turn away from the truth, this book is so critical in helping us understand the urgent and immediate need to change public opinion and policy regarding pornography - and to help our kids remain unharmed by our pornography-saturated culture.

John is a gifted writer and the content is nothing short of thorough and necessary for todays struggles with the epidemic of pornography. As a licensed marital and family therapist this is a tremendous resource.

Everyone needs to read this book. It is eye opening and terrifying. The harm done by pornography goes way beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Most academically written books lose me in their citations and technical bs. This book cuts through the crap and gets to the real effects of pornography. It should be required reading in every church and school in the modern world.

VERY important information in this book. It was recommended by one of my clients who met the author at a local church. Pornography is a horrible addiction and hurts so many people.

Which are alarming...I appreciate this non-biased and informative book. It is not vulgar or sensationalized. I feel well informed and know how to move forward in a more educated and understanding way. Many thanks.

Unless your family has been ripped apart due to the pornography use of a family member then you truly can't grasp the full effects of the devastation it can cause. The book is a great resource for anyone willing to educate themselves on its toxic effects.

Informative.

Review

""The Darkest Summer" is not only exciting reading -- a cautionary tale about Korea in 1950 -- but it should also make every sensible reader ask why it's a good idea to fight in faraway foreign countries like Korea, or Afghanistan today, without a plan for victory or an exit strategy." -- Michael Korda, author of "Ike""How did we get enmeshed in this struggle halfway around the world? Was it worth it? Was it victory, defeat, or merely stalemate? In Bill Sloan's well-told tale, I found my answers." -- Joseph E. Persico, author of "Roosevelt's Secret War"""The Darkest Summer" is a truly heroic book. In heart-pounding detail, Bill Sloan recounts the most momentous season in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps -- the fateful summer of 1950. Riveting from the first page to the last." -- Alex Kershaw, author of" Escape from the Deep" and "The Bedford Boys""There is no story quite like this in military history -- the epic tale of how the American Army, the mightiest war machine in the history of the world in 1945, was surprised and overrun a mere five years later by a nation that had been a subject-state of Japan in 1945. And then how America's pathetically ill-prepared armed forces regrouped with astonishing speed and launched one of the most audacious counteroffensives in military annals, one that saved South Korea from communism and changed the course of world history. The Darkest Summer is a stunningly good military history, crafted in the style of an accomplished novel, with characters that are almost too interesting to be believed." -- Donald L. Miller, author of "Masters of the Air"""The Darkest Summer" is a harrowing and heroic tale of Korean War valor. By interviewing U.S. Marines who fought at Pusan and Inchon, Bill Sloan transports the reader to ground zero in Korea. A truly riveting read." -- Douglas Brinkley, author of "The Wilderness Warrior""In 1950, President Truman and others were in the process of a military reunifying and downsizing that would have essentially eliminated the U.S. Marine Corps. Then came Korea, and in the battles for Pusan and Inchon, the Marines did what had to be done. Bill Sloan, the premier chronicler of war at the ground level, tells the whole awful, bloody story in his superb "The Darkest Summer", a dead-on account that answers forever the question, 'What is war really like?'" -- Jim Lehrer, anchor of "The NewsHour" on PBS and author of "Oh, Johnny"

Well told story about the fateful summer of 1950, when the Korean war began and the UN-forces and the ROK-armys stand on the Pusan perimeter along the Naktong river. It also covers the story of the ill-fated Task Force Smith hopeless attempts to stop the North Korean advance. The first US Marines that landed in Korea were dispatched directly to face the NKPA.During these battles the Marines developted the close knit cooperation between the men on the ground and the planes flying close air support of the aircraft carriers based offshore. Tactics that were to serve them well later at the Chosin reservoir and a decade later in Vietnam.Excellent cover on the details of the landings at Inchon and the fighting to recapture Seoul.Once the word of the landings reached the North Korean units in the far south, the army began to disintegrated. It also shows the mistake McArthur made by sending an invasion force around the Korean peninsula, from Inchon to land close to Hungnam, in that way providing many NKPA units a chance to escape to the north.

I want to like this book. I've read Bill Sloan previously, and like his material. I suppose "The Darkest Summer" is an exception. It's good, but the kindle version is missing pages, so its impossible to follow the story completely. The kindle version also has no maps. I wish publishers could understand how difficult it is to read a military history without maps to track the action geographically. Don't take this as a criticism of Bill Sloan, he's a very good author. His publishers have failed him with regards to the kindle version of this book.

Mr Sloan has done something unique, held my attention on a subject that I have read much on. His account of the three critical months that saved South Korea and the US Marines as an organiazed fighting unit. Interesting accounts of the brutal fights and the brave army and Marines that stemmed the tide of the North koreans. It is packed with facts, amazing characters that did the impposible and faced a ruthless foe bent on victory at any cost.I would rank this among Mr Sloan's best works and I have read several of his other books. I recommend this title for anyone wanting to learn more about our brave military members then and now and to discover the horrific conditions they had to back in 1950 - the year I was born. Tough guys and glad we had men like these when we needed them. Real American heroes and Sloan does justice to the other UN forces that stepped up to the plate in dire times as these.

Fantastic account of the early days of the Korean war (UN police action). I was especially interested in the formation and employment of the 1st Marine Brigade early in the war. My father joined B/1/5 as second platoon commander in November, 1950 as the Regiment advanced towards the Yalu river and the famous "frozen Chosin" action. Incredible accounts of Marines doing what Marines do best. I actually bought it for a friend of mine who served with my dad at that time as a squad leader, second platoon, B/1/5. He thoroughly enjoyed it also.

This account of the war in Korea aptly demonstrates how the heroic sacrifices of the combat troops were required to offset the hubris of the top commanders that pushed an agenda that called for their continued sacrifice.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time, I learned things that I didn't know about the Korean war, a very personal book for me,The Darkest Summer: Pusan and Inchon 1950: The Battles That Saved South Korea--and the Marines--from Extinction featuring a relative and war hero 2nd Marine Lt. Frank Muetzel, this is one of those books that is very hard to put down once you start reading it, fast pace and extremely intriguing with every page you turn to, if you want to read an excelent book about the hard fought Korean war, then you will not go wrong with this book " The Darkest Summer" by Bill Sloan.

Another Bill Sloan book about war, the guy really knows how to tell a good story and make you have some small idea of what the soldiers on the ground went through. This "little forgotten" was a near disaster for us and this book tells how lucky we were to have survived.

This is my first Korean War book. I've read all of Bill Sloan's WWII books and really enjoyed them. They stand alone from a lot of military history books because of the way Mr. Sloan slices out a story from or about a group of men or unit or action and tells a story. It's not dry history, but storytelling, and by that I do not mean made-up or embellished either. It's telling a story but not so deep you can't enjoy the read. ( Some military history books require great effort ).I'm almost done reading this book and will edit ( update ) when finished, but can already remark on how satisfying this book is to read. Since this is my first Korean War book, I am only judging this book and how it satisfies my desire to learn about the premise of the book and so far, Sloan sets it up nicely and then is clearly and richly, filling in on the premise. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.It's quite clear to me that this was an awful time to be in the armed services and the veterans of this war deserve great honor and our support. The Korean War is still forgotten by too many. This book, with others, is a great way to learn more..UPDATE: 4/29/10: Finished book a few weeks ago. It is excellent throughout and I recommend it. Well done and satisfying.

Refreshing! Enjoyable! Hope Callaghan’s mysteries are entertaining, and just good, clean, laugh-out-loud, funny at times. The main characters, Mercedes and her mother, Carlita, have moved from New York to Savannah, where they are establishing a new life. Their relationship is becoming one of friends, as they work together to renovate two buildings into apartments and businesses. Working toward these goals, they meet some interesting characters, make some good friends, and have a few “this shouldn’t be happening to us” experiences. Callaghan’s descriptions of Savannah are lively and magical. I want to live there. In Carlita’s apartment building. And be her friend. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

What a tough mother/daughter team! On their own for the first time, Carlita and Mercedes move from New York to Savannah, GA. No one knows of their mob family ties they left behind. They have to remodel the property they were left by their husband and father when he was killed. They meet friends and foes as they work to set up the life they want. It is entertaining and addictive reading.

I liked them...I liked the characters. I don't understand the laugh-out-loud funny comments by some reviewers, however...I have read all 9 of her novels now, and there was maybe a chuckle or two (usually over Elvira), but not hilarious! Maybe smile or chuckle-worthy!They are entertaining, no big action scenes, but a fairly interesting mystery. However, the whole book works toward the mystery and then it all seems solved 'off-screen.' :-)However, sometimes you just need a calm, soothing, easy-to-read book to take you out of the current rat race and this certainly does it. Also, having been to Savannah recently, I have really enjoyed the descriptions of the city. That was a big plus.If you don't want to do the heavy-lifting with a novel, this fits the bill...very soothing read at the beach or before bed. Enjoyed immensely.

I don't agree that this was a laugh out loud book. I don't recall really laughing at all. However, I did enjoy this book quite a lot. I could feel the nervous tension in making the decision to move to Savannah. I could understand her frustrations in her questions about her husband's faithfulness. And yes I'm hooked, I'm going to have to find out what happens when they make it to Savannah for good. I love things that hope has written and have read nearly all of her book series so far. I'm sure I will enjoy this series as well!Book two was quite Good. We learn more about Savannah as well as getting a better look at some of the ASA. Looking forward to the next book.

This book set was a very fast read and one that held my interest throughout. The characters were well defined and the suspense was consistent throughout. Have enjoyed other books by this author and will continue to follow her.

Enjoyed the lite reading when I wake up at night. Looking forward to the next grouping, and other books authored by Hope Callaghan..com

Carlita had been married to a mobster although upon his death, her husband requested his children get out of the lifestyle. When he dies, she tries to get her children out of the mob. She finds a deed to three buildings in Savannah and some gems, so she takes them and leaves with her daughter, Mercedes, to start a new life. Carlita thinks if she fixes up the place she chose that her sons will come. Son, Venie, comes there, but Tony hasn’t stayed, yet. This is a fun to read series.

So fun. This mother-daughter duo are so great to watch as they become strong women who learn to take care of each other, and their new friends and family. Plus the backdrop of Savannah I love. It is a great city, and I love that this story keeps you with all walks of life characters, not just the wealthy.

A must have for horse enthusiasts of all ages! My neice is 5 and loves it. The horses are larger and more simple but detailed enough to interest older kids or the adult wanting to color too.

So, this is how I would describe the book. The recommended age for this coloring book is for 8 years and up is about right. lol This is because you have a lot to color and it is a little tricky as well. I would recommend coloring pencils though!I am 34 and a big lover of horses but I am also a special needs adult. Therefore, this is why I bought it that and its hard for me to color with other coloring books recommended for my age. This book is enough to keep me interested for me to color in but it is not so much coloring that I loose my attention with the book. I would recommend this book to anyone!

This was a present for a 4 year old, who loved it.

Our granddaughter, who loves horses, was very excited to have such a cute coloring and sticker book!

The two year old and her mother loved it

Bought this for a 4 year old who loves to color, loves horses and loves stickers..100%...got all three. Pictures perfect for age. Also the size is good for young age. Very pleased.

Calms and quiets

My 5 year old loves this coloring book, she's horse-obsessed just like mommy. She wishes there were more stickers, but the horses and designs to color are beautiful.
