I just received my “new” copy of Vascular Nursing Scope & Standards of Care. I am very disappointed. The book was greasy on both covers and something was wet in package and as a result the pages are wet and discolored. I cannot believe I spent $30+ dollars on this.

I give this book a 4.5. Love the author's style of writing, love the character development. This book flowed so well I read it all in one setting, going to pay for it in the morning. My only minor complaint, and the reason for the .5, is that there were grammatical errors sprinkled here and there. Luckily, the story line more than made up for it! Looking forward to the next book in the series!

I loved the story line this would make a great movie...Troys and Aria's characters were so believable...even when they broke up. The grammatical errors were annoying but the characters saved you.....The sister girlfriends were on point but not over done like some books they were real down to earth friends that you make you think about your friends and everyone should have friends like these. Also it was nice that the back stories did not over shadow the main story Ms. Ashley is a must read!!!! Happy reading

Well written and enjoyable story. Tory is such a sweetheart. He is one of my favorite characters of AshleyNicole. Aria did grate on my nerves at times. Looking forward to the next installment. I hope there is more to come for their story.

I got into the characters and enjoyed everyone's interaction . Relationships can be trick to maneuver throughout that compromise and patiences come in to play. The heroine had a few issues which had to be handled. Her support gave sage advice and she listened (most don't). I liked the book wished it was longer. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Oh yeah! I love this! I was not ready! I love the character development of Tory and Aria. I really enjoyed it. Very very good read! Kudos AshleyNicole!

I recently discovered this author a few months back and have read all of her books. I applaud the way she develops each character, the realness of the situations they experience and how each are willing to be vulnerable to go to the next step. Having said that, Aria got on my nerves!!! Her stubbornness and deep need to always be in control could have cost her a lot. Hopefully she will get it together in the other books since this ending left things with Tory a bit unfinished.

This was a good book but had a few areas of challenged execution. As another reviewer pointed out, Tory was a tad bit too perfect. It would have been nice if at least one flaw was identified but he was the total antithesis of someone his age and occupation. However, I did like him. One aspect about him that I could have absolutely done without was the thumb-sucking. Not sure why the author thought that was necessary but that was difficult hump for me to get over and take serious. I was turned off reading it, so I can't imagine or relate to the heroin thinking it was so cute. Finally, my only other issue was the loose end with her mother's move (if in fact she did move) and the rushed ending. Why go through the climatic break-up to have the make-up as anti-climatic as it was--it just didn't feel organic. Oh, one other thing--I think the assault details took a sharp turn for sadistic with the long nails/mutilation details--that too felt unnecessary. The trauma of the assualt in and of itself was sufficient for the reader to understand Aria's issues but added layer of the scarring and damage due to Khalid's nails was a bit over the top to me and again, unnecessary.

It's so important that people get to the root of their problem. People like to judge situations from the surface. Not to give too much a way, this was a good read. It had lots of grammatical errors though.

My husband and I are planning a two week trip to Utah in October to celebrate our 65th birthdays driving from SLC to Moab and on to Navaho Nation and Bryce and Zion ending up in Las Vegas.I was reluctant to download the kindle version of a new guidebook that had not been reviewed, but glad I did.I like the way the authors have divided the big state into sections. Easier to digest the info that way. I especially like the Say it Right section with correct pronunciations. Not being Mormon, I found the section on Conduct and Customs interesting if we encounter standoffish folks. What I hadn't thought of at all, and the authors brought to my attention, was the possibility we wouldn't be able to buy gas on Sundays and the likelihood restaurants will be closed. Will make sure our gas tank and cooler are full. The other thing that I found helpful was the recommendations on healthy restaurants and vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurants. We are both 20 year vegetarian/vegan plant based eaters so to find this in a guidebook is a plus. Even carnivores might was to take a break once in awhile. Very helpful.Although the kindle version is very handy, I will likely buy the paperback as I like to bend, tear apart and mark up a guidebook. After all, a guidebook is a minuscule cost of our entire trip, but can make a big difference.

Lots of good details.

One of the things I really like about Moon Guides is that they are very complete, covering everything that is necessary to know about visiting the destination. The "essential" section covers transportation, health and safety, business hours, services, etc. This is especially important for visiting Utah, because it is predominantly Mormon and slightly different in terms of customs and culture. For example, it is good to know that everything shuts down on Sundays, and the traveler needs to plan ahead to gas up and figure out what to do about meals before Sunday arrives. A very nice section of historical background of just the right length enhances an understanding of the area.I also appreciate the Moon Guide way of organizing the destination into manageable sections, greatly facilitating trip planning. A day to day itinerary featuring the best of Utah is provided, though cross referencing with page numbers that is included in some Moon guides is not available in this one. All the sites are described in detail, with a good range of recommended lodging and restaurants. We have been to Utah many times and thought we've pretty much covered most of where we want to go, but this guide helped us identify Kanab as a new area to explore.

It was a good guide. But we were trying to find out about Utah Data Center but there was no information. We had to figure out the hike ourselves and how to get there. We didn't even get access to it. The Utah Data Center is like a monument of our time! It's like a must see!#travelNSA #abovethecloud #breakthecloud #peoplenotdata #bitchwheresmydata #visitNSA

Red River Resistance (A Girl Called Echo)

Review

I absolutely loved Pemmican Wars, the first book in the A Girl Called Echo series. I am thrilled to be saying that Red River Resistance has absolutely lived up to my expectations.Katherena Vermette has woven a beautiful story that blends together the everyday life of a lonely teenage Métis girl in Manitoba with the history of the Métis in that area. Echo is an incredibly relatable character that I think many teens would see themselves in. I moved around a lot as a teen and dealt with a lot of depression, with music and reading serving as my primary comforts, so Echo reminds me a lot of my teenage self. The historical aspects are fascinating. It is painful and important seeing Echo come to terms with the history of the Métis, and too realistic to see her going into it without knowing very much. These stories highlight gaps in my own knowledge that make me feel eager to learn. The information in this volume is a little better known than the information in the first volume, but genuinely not by much. There is so much to learn still, so I look forward to seeing what events the next volume will focus on.Scott B. Henderson is a talented artist, and I have enjoyed a number of other books featuring his work. This is no exception, his work in A Girl Called Echo continues to be impressive. I think part of why I connect this story mentally to 7 Generations is because he did the art for both (although both stories also have a contemporary and historical focus and were published by HighWater Press, so it makes sense either way). I always prefer Henderson's work when it's coloured, and Donovan Yaciuk's colouring works incredibly well here, and it helps to bring the story to life.I appreciated the historical timeline and the Métis List of Rights included in the back. I personally always enjoy reading any additional real-world facts in the back of any of my historical fiction readings.I am incredibly eager to see where else this story goes, and I look forward to seeing a third volume in the future. I hope to read more from all of the creators involved in this series. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys any kind of blend of contemporary and historical story. (Elizabeth Kolar NetGalley 2018-11-27)Holy cow! Ok Vermette, we need another 4 issues to make it a volume! Let’s do this, for the libraries, ASAP! We NEED more of Echo! It puts me in the mind of Kindred by Octavia Butler. The artwork is beautiful, I love the story. I love that it features an Indigenous girl, in middle school, who seems like a bit of a rebel. I wasn’t able to read the 1st one so I’m sure I’m missing a bit, and yet the story is still complete enough for it to gain a new fan! As an American, I'm not as well versed as I could be in Canada’s history, so this was an amazing first look at the events that occurred. I look forward to more (Did I say ASAP? Can I make such a request? Please Vermette, more, soon!)! I can’t say I love this enough!   (Tiffini Terry NetGalley 2018-11-20)Red River Resistance is a graphic novel taking place through the eyes of a 13-year-old girl, Echo who time travels between events in the Red River area of Canada in 1869-1870. Not being Canadian, I was not familiar with the history at ALL and so greatly appreciated the timeline in the back of the book! The story portrays the injustice done to the indigenous people throughout North America during this time in history, but focusing on the Métis people of Canada. Despite the more than a 100 years since the events, Echo - a descendent of some of the original inhabitants - still struggles with her identity and place in the world, and the effects of a corrupt government that cared nothing for the people it displaced, only for the monetary value of their lands. The illustrations in this book suit the story perfectly. They have an overall blue/gray cast that lends itself to the mood, and there are very few words even for a graphic novel. For the subject matter, it really works. I will definitely be going back and looking for the first of this series, and hope there will be more after! (Elizabeth Amos NetGalley 2018-11-27)The illustrations are a marvelous work of art. The story is interesting and well-written. This is a novel that teachers can surely use in LA, history, and social studies lessons. (Giada Pozzo NetGalley 2018-11-17)I thought this was an excellent continuation of the first book. The main character grows in her knowledge of indigenous history as well as her own self. It is a strong novel that shows the truth in what might be a skewed sense of history. (Brenna S. NetGalley 2018-11-26)This is a well written, beautiful graphic novel, I enjoyed reading it. I am looking forward to the third volume! Thank you for the opportunity to review this book. (Melissa Schmidt NetGalley 2018-12-04)Kindred meets Canadian Aboriginal history as Echo slips back and forth between time from present day Winnipeg to the Red River Valley, where she observes the annexation of the Red River Colony into Canada and the fight of the Métis to ensure their say in their government.Knowing absolutely nothing about Canadian history and less than that about Aboriginal Canadian history, this was fairly confusing—but it was laid out clearly. So, having not read the first book in the series, Pemmican Wars, all I can say is that I do wish that Echo's timeline had been skipped completely, as she seemed fairly bland and closed off (which makes sense, as she was emotionally distant because of being separated from her mother), in favor of following the Métis and their struggles to keep a say on their land and their culture. Again, this was because I hadn't read the first book and didn't have the background, so this is entirely an issue to do with me jumping in mid-series.The timeline at the very end of the graphic novel is the most illuminating, as it has a clear chain of events that lead to the Red River Resistance, the groups involved, the different motivations, the Métis List of Rights, and the creation of Manitoba as Canada's fifth province—and who wins, who loses, and who lived to tell their stories (and finally learning the the stories of the marginalized).I enjoyed the LGBTQIA+ rep, and especially the #ownvoices Aboriginal rep.Definitely a good read to get a basic understanding of Manitoban history, and the history of Aboriginal Canadians.I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. (Laurel Beckley NetGalley 2018-12-05)This title is an absolute must for any school library or public library in Canada. With the 150th anniversary of the Red River resistance occurring in 2019, and the major focus of the Canadian government on reconciliation, this comic couldn't have come at a better time. I am so pleased to be finding so many new comics and graphic novels by Indigenous creators, and the fact that is title focuses on Métis history is fantastic! This title is the second in a series about a young Métis girl, Echo, who finds herself in some sort of foster care. While there she is attending high school and "experiencing" the history of the past, most notably the events surrounding the controversial and tumultuous Red River resistance.I did read the first volume of this series, and I was very excited about this next instalment. Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I think my main problem is that this seems to be focusing on telling the story of the Red River resistance very quickly, but in doing so, it has forgotten to develop the characters. It also takes it for granted that you have some background in this history.Sadly, this means that the characters are little more than shells. Even the main character, Echo has less than a personality. I feel like she was beginning to be explored in the first volume, but her personality just fell flat in this one. There is so much more that could be done with this story without exaggerating or undermining the important history that is being explored. I wanted so much more!Because of this, I feel like it'll lose some of its audience. This comes off more as an educational work, and less as a something to pick up for pleasure. However, as an educational work it is invaluable, and would do very well to be included as supplemental material in Canadian elementary and high school classrooms. (Laura Cheesman NetGalley 2018-12-11)Included on CBC Books' "The Best Canadian comics of 2018" list: https://www.cbc.ca/books/the-best-canadian-comics-of-2018-1.4944651 (CBC Books 2018-12-17)This is the 2nd volume of a historical narrative of two group of settlers, the English and the French, fighting over the territory of the Metis, the Native Americans who live on that land in Canada during the 19th Century. Echo, the protagonist, is learning about the events in her history class during the 21st Century, and reliving the events of the past in person in tandem. This is an interesting narrative decision by author, Katherena Vermette, because there is a difference between living through an event and reading about it.While I have not had the chance to read the first volume, it is not difficult to get into the story. Given Echo's predicament, readers will wonder whether or not Echo is experiencing history just so she doesn't have to deal with the present. At the same time, Echo gets to experience history with all of the cruelty that goes with it.For those who are not familiar with Canadian or Native American history, this graphic novel provides an interesting insight to a group of Native Americans from Canada. Katherena Vermette presents her readers with the familiar narrative the Native Americans, throughout the Americas, suffered through from the Settlers who stole their land and livelihoods from them through unjust means. Readers have an idea of what happened to the Metis, but Echo's story remains a mystery. We'll just have to wait until the next volume to find out.I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. (Lois Young NetGalley 2018-12-18)

Wandering Son, Vol. 4

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up–This volume continues the story of Nitori Shuichi, a girl who wants to be a boy named Takatsuki Yoshino, and the friends and rivals who enhance and complicate their lives. The characters are reintroduced in the opening pages (in “The Wandering Son Board Game”), which are illustrated in color. This story intersperses the real-life drama taking place between the youngsters at home and in the classroom with the stories that Shu writes in which he imagines himself as a “tragic heroine.” The story is filled with mixed signals, rumors, unrequited love, boys and girls fighting over one another, and love-hate relationships. Add to this the gender confusion felt by the main characters, and the romantic tensions become even more complicated. And as the characters get ready to enter middle school, with its gender-specific uniforms, each one is being pushed to conform to society's standards. The illustrations are mostly done in a straightforward manga style, but periodically scenes are suddenly elevated to a cinematic level with dramatically faded backgrounds. Tatako's artwork definitely enhances the story, with the black-and-white pages conveying even more emotion and power than the color illustrations. Even though these books focus on middle-grade students, the story is told in such a thoughtful and mature way, featuring lots of interior monologues and character exploration, that will go over the heads that audience. Fans of the earlier books will want to read this volume and the rest of the books in this series to see how the different characters' relationships with on another evolve over time.–Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2013. Review

“Wandering Son is an important manga series, much celebrated for the sensitive treatment of its two young transgender protagonists. It offers nuanced portrayals of these two middle schoolers, their friends, and their families. The tone is sweet, gentle, and hopeful, making it a pleasant reading experience. At the same time, it doesn’t turn away from realistic issues like bullying and the pain of experiencing puberty when your body already doesn’t match the way you feel inside.” - Nic Willcox, No Flying No Tights

I love the way this series tackles gender and sexuality. It contains a lot of heavy topics but is not bogged down by angst and dread. You feel for the characters and want them to succeed! I waited over a year for this to be released in print for English and I'm glad I stuck it out. The book has an endearing drawing style that doesn't over complicate anything. I recommend the series to preteen and up.The hardcovers are gorgeous and look great on the shelf though they are taller than most average sized manga.

This volume continues the great story of the series thus far. I do think of this volume as being a slight step down from the great volume 3. The story slows down a bit from the great pace of the previous volume. I would also note that this volume somehow had a few quality issues with the translation. The biggest of those issues is that Suehiro Anna is referred to as Hirosue Anna for the first 40 pages or so of the book, but thereafter her surname appears correctly as Suehiro. This is a bit of a shame as Fantagraphics' releases for this series had been of impeccable quality so far. Even with these minor issues, however, this volume still packs a very good story and is very enjoyable.

Review

"The Paradox of Generosity is a winner. It's a terrific book full of interesting and important data and insights and, more important, meaningful lessons for each of us and for all of us. Parents should make this book required reading for their adult children as a roadmap to greater happiness, health, and purpose in life." --Jack Brennan, Chairman Emeritus, The Vanguard Group "'It is a sociological fact: by giving ourselves away, we flourish!' Smith and Davidson provide data to support the truth of that statement as they unpack the rich learnings of Notre Dame's 'Science of Generosity Initiative.' A must read for scholars, health professionals, nonprofit leaders, fundraisers, religious practitioners. But more: it written for anyone who in their giving and living want to live well and make a difference." --William G. Enright, Director of the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, Indiana University "...compelling and well-researched... the book argues that the regular practice of being generous with our money, time, and relationships enhances happiness." --Publishers Weekly "...[Fascinating]... I'm grateful for [the authors'] extensive research and careful presentation of the results. The charts, data, and lengthy interviews found in The Paradox of Generosity should satisfy skeptics and scholars. They have employed the language of academia to describe in new ways something that has always been true: That generosity feels good, and is good for you..." --Englewood Review of Books "Smith and Davidson paint a rich portrait of the generous and ungenerous family, using excellent data." --CHOICE "This is a cogent, clearly written book that deftly weaves theoretical concepts and quantitative data into an intriguing account of generosity and how, precisely, it facilitates health, happiness, and purpose in life." --American Journal of Sociology

Giving is not a panacea. Giving doesn't guarantee riches. Using the scientific method, Smith and Davidson, demonstrate factually what great thinkers have understood as truth for thousands of years. It is a fascinating study in what could be considered self destructive behavior as so many of us remain ungenerous. It is also a fascinating study in guiding principles that transcend time, religion, and philosophy of the power of giving.Even before this book, I've always talked with Scouts who take Personal Management about their understanding of giving (Requirement 3.g.). This book will add insight and weight to the perennial challenge I issue to Scouts to give and prove what has been taught throughout humanity's existence about giving. While there are not too many things I really expect Scouts to remember from merit badges, even one as important as Personal Management, this notion of consciously practicing giving is something I hope they do. The empirical evidence presented in the book is structured in a way that is compelling to help make it unforgettable. They show that all things being equal, those that give are relatively better off than their peers who do not. This holds true across economic quintiles as well as across the spectrum of health conditions. Two people in the same quintile, and of relatively similar health situations will be happy based on the degree of giving to which they commit. This doesn't negate ambition, or a realistic understanding of one's state, it simply emphasizes how giving establishes our connections as humans leading to the blessedness and intrinsic joy that comes from giving of both resources and time. One point they make, is that by committing to the act of giving first, a conscious effort to more effectively manage the remainder takes place and this is in evidence in the research. The evidence is that those who give tend to have better control over their finances and time than those who do not.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this topic as a student of life, Scout leaders who teach Personal Management Merit Badge, and to church leaders seeking to engage a deeper understanding of these principles in their congregations.

This is a seriously researched and scholarly book that is neverthless easy to read because the text is aimed at the general reader, while the supporting detail is in the thorough endnotes. As a practicing Buddhist, I was taught that generosity is the easiest of the great virtues because it is self-rewarding, that is, it makes you feel good when you do it. This book reports on extensive reasearch that shows that there are many provable benefits to generosity, some of them unexpected (generous people better understand and control their finances than ungenerous).Although the book is lengthy and stuffed with facts, it is not hard to keep reading. It is positive and uplifting, making the reader feel that humanity has a core decency that may not always manifest, but has positive effects when it does.I would highly recommend this book not only to those who are interested in human motivation and neuroscience, but also to persons like fundraisers for charitable organizations.

Great topic, so important. A slightly condescending tone in places (ugh).

You'd be surprised at how little you know as to why and who (even yourself) give. (hint-most do NOT do it take advantage of saving on taxes). It's far deeper.

Great book with sound and actionable advice on relationship-building for donors (fundraising) and volunteers.

Interesting studies of those who give (of themselves and of their money) and those who don't. Great fodder for discussions and thought.

Amazing! Well done!

Worthwhile read.
