He survived this event, went back to England with knowledge of the Indians and the new world.He used that knowledge later, when he returned to the new world on the Mayflower to help his fellow pilgrims to survive the harsh world they had landed in.This is a great book, that deals with the Jamestown problems and how this shipwreck.that saved Jamestown.If they had failed, I know that my family before me and up to my current family would not be here. A historian on tv surmised that the Mayflower might not have come over. That might have meant that another European country might have been the founders of what we call America.

I had recently read a history of the Jamestown settlement, and learned about this episode in that. While this book also covers some of the history of Jamestown, it is much more. Besides the story of the wreck itself, it goes into the political and religious reasons behind the settlement idea, looks at what is known of the backgrounds and personalities of many of the principals involved, and describes both a ship of that time period, and what an ocean voyage was like. It has a very readable style, so that I found myself often deciding to read "just one more page", and finishing a chapter instead. Too many times I have walked away from a book with on otherwise interesting subject, simply because the writing style was too hard to follow or hold my attention. This book is anything but that. An excellent story, and very well written. As a fan of almost any American history, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a new chapter of it.

Most of us remember the story of Jamestown from high school history and maybe even from a visit to the Jamestown site. But I never knew more than that the English settlers had a hard winter! The authors have documented and put together a clearly written . . . and disturbing . . . story about how really difficult it was to gain a foothold in the New World. As usual those in charge were driven by greed and poor planning so that hundreds died unnecessarily. But then again, without the funds and big egos of the "leaders", we might all now be citizens of Spain. Reading about the horrors the colonists endured, especially the cannibalism, caused me to have nightmares! But the saving of the souls on the Venture, which eventually saved the whole colony, was thrilling. This is stuff movies are made of. I'd give the book five stars except that there is some redundancy, especially the final chapter that seemed to just reminding me what they had already said. Don't read it if real life makes you nervous. Do read it if you want the whole story of our country's feeble beginning.

I picked up this book before a trip to Bermuda hoping to find a fun history of the Sea Venture expedition. In the end, the story of the Sea Venture was every bit as exciting as advertised. The book followed the truly amazing and gripping story of the Virginia colony and the accidental colonization of Bermuda. In addition to being a great story the author also does a good job of drawing from an enormous amount of primary sources and gives large parts of the story in the words of the castaways or colonists themselves. My only criticism of the book (and the reason I only gave it 3 stars) was the writing itself. The writing was so repetitive I found myself skimming large portions of the book in an attempt to avoid déjà vu. For example, when describing the marketing campaign of the Virginia company, the book has to cite close to 25 different sources all saying the same thing (i.e. God wants England to colonize Virginia; we must colonize Virginia in the name of God and King; if you colonize Virginia you will go to Heaven). We get it ... the campaign was marketed using religious and patriotic rhetoric... And beyond sometimes providing too many examples, the language used by the author was also repetitive. Often entire sentences would be largely identical to sentences you'd already read. For example, the author describes the colonists as motivated by a combination of "ambition" and "desperation" at least 15 times. Using exactly the same phraseology. If, however, you can get over this repetition (or skim through the portions that you feel like you've already read) you can learn about a truly remarkable adventure!

This is the story of the original Sea Venture that came ashore Bermuda and led to its discovery hundreds of years ago as a place of beauty as opposed to the treacherous island it was once thought to be. My wife and I met on a more modern Sea Venture in the 1970s en route to Bermuda, and so this story resonates with us even more.

I give this book my recommendation for those contemplating, actively planning or already living in Cambodia. I've been living here for about seven months now and know already a lot of what is contained in this book. Still, i would recommend this to other ex pats living here. But most strongly to those new here or planning to move here in the future. It will make your transition here so much easier. There are plenty of tidbits and resources that i didn't know about and find useful. If you are new to Cambodia or planning on moving here, this book will save you a lot of time learning from experience and probably help you feel more secure living here knowing how to be safe. ( Yes, yes, yes... do wear a helmet if you decide to ride on or drive your own motorbike )The author also gives enough of an overview to the history and culture of Cambodia without making the reader lose interest and gives excellent suggestions for further reading. I appreciate her discussion of tourist orphanage volunteers. Although the expat audience is not the primary target of this problem, it is never the less best to get this information out wherever one can.I'm not sure i would be that confident of the ice in Cambodia as the author suggests. I recently got very sick from something i consumed in the provinces and i suspect it was bad ice. The shaped ice is higher quality. If it's crushed ice, it may be from the cheaper ice that has lower standards. I drink a lot of kafie tik da koo, tik ka ( ice coffee with sweet milk ) But for anyone living here, you'll most likely start taking more risks. Anyway, keep the pepto bismol and immodium handy and enjoy your drinks.The table of contents are in the back of the book. Maybe this will be corrected in updates.

I am an avid reader of the blog, but I am glad I went for it and bought this book which I use for reference quite frequently. The suggestions for actual businesses which can help confused expats navigate Cambodian life smoothly are really helpful, and the actual interviews of expats throughout the chapters are quite interesting as well. I particularly found the chapter on hospitals and medical care to be helpful, especially since it outlined which problems and ailments can be treated in the kingdom, and which are better to treat abroad in nearby Thailand or Singapore.This book wont solve all of the problems you might encounter, but it does offer a straight-forward explanation of what to expect as you make your move to this country. I would recommend this to anyone as a supplement to the already wonderful blog by Lina Goldberg!

I will probably never actually move to Cambodia, or anywhere outside the U.S., but I like to think that some day I might. "Move to Cambodia' is so interesting and well written that it's a great read for anyone who enjoys fantasizing about taking off for faraway places. So even though the chances that I'm ever going to need to know how to pay for garbage service in Phnom Penh are probably slim, I really enjoyed this book. Its candid and witty discussions of the cultural differences Westerners are likely to encounter are fascinating, and so are its descriptions of the day-to-day challenges and pleasures of life in Cambodia.In addition to enjoying "Move to Cambodia" as fantasy fodder, I've also been recommending it to my many friends who have 20- and 30-something kids living at home. Why not pack the youngsters off to the Kingdom of Wonder, where they can get a job and afford an apartment, instead of letting them molder in the parental basement indefinitely? Sounds like a win-win to me!

I have lived here for the past five and a half years. I still found some new information. Lina has put a lot of practical information in one easy to use volume. Pay attention to Lina's advice on security. She is right Cambodia is not a high crime country compared to places like South Africa or parts of Brazil but you do need to modify your behaviour to the country. The country is not going to adapt to you.Sure you might find the same information on the Internet. But why bother? Lina has done the work and done it well.

Take a look at the table of contents, covers a lot of areas in good detail and is written in an easy to read journalistic style. The comments about volunteering, and about how much of what gets called volunteering doesn't help and often hurts the recipients is explained. This is a universal comment and makes the price of the book worth it. Volunteering would have been one of my goals for going overseas, and I learned I must be very careful in choosing such opportunities.

Move to Cambodia is a contemporary book that follows in the tradition of the Culture Shock book by Peter North that came out in 2006 or 2007. While some of the information is better covered by Peter in his own volume, Lina's "update" truly does provide a significant overhaul on a lot of sections, and also cuts down on Peter's approach which is slightly more bantering. That said, both texts compliment each other.If you're looking for resources and tips in one handy volume, it's not that expensive to pick up Lina's book and read through it in an hour or two. The value is in being able to refer to it when specific questions arise. All in all, I'm glad I bought it, and will be taking it with me when I move to Cambodia in a month.

The book is slightly used but, it's in good condition. Kinda boring to read but, it's straight to the point.

If you are anywhere in the management chain of command of a company (all the way to CEO) and doing business in California (the most litigious state in the most litigious country) this book will give you an excellent idea of what your attorneys should and should not be doing. Because it is written for paralegals it is easy to understand and explains/defines much of the legal jargon. Unfortunately you cannot rely on county and state agencies to protect your company so you had better arm yourself with some knowledge!

Don't use the study guide to reinforce what you read in the textbook. There are constant conflicts in what the study guide has as an answer and what is written in the textbook. Many questions are extremely ambiguous with more than one correct answer. Very frustrating.

A great read, although a bit dated -- I hadn't realized when I ordered this that it was a 20-year old book. So rather than being a look at how the world of work is now, it really shows how it began, where loyalty, commitment, longevity and pride in being a part of something eroded. As the author says, "The qualities of good work are not the qualities of good character." And nothing much has changed for the worker in America since the book was published. "No long term commitment" is the norm now, on both sides, rather than just a few companies' way of doing business. "Flexible employment" often means no set schedules, no definite hours. So rather than a means to "work / life balance", workers have to keep their entire 24 hours open, with no set schedule, and little advance notice. Technology has reduced many trades to "button-pushing", as he uses the example of bakers in the book. Computer skills, or the ability to push the right button at the right time, has become more important than actually knowing how to create the product. It's a bit heavy on old studies and stats, but the author provides human examples to back them up.

Sennett's evocation of the nature of work in postmodern capitalism is spot-on in recognizing and explaining the alienating factors at play in a de-centered, job-based not career-based working world. In fact the book, a long essay, was in places hard to read because he evoked some memories of my own encounters with this world. It was harder to read also knowing that the research and the ideas driving the work were in place during the time of writing. Much has changed in ways that only amplify the alienation felt by workers. If, as Sennett claims, that the breakdown of the corporate structure is bad news psychologically for the worker -- where there is no clear antagonist in the workplace -- then the alienation is exponentially more evident in a world with ten percent unemployment. This essay was true when he was writing and the US economy was creating over a million jobs a year. The issues he explores are only more true now.

Written in a very relatable manner, it poses questions to modern developments and how human these are. It gives very good and developed insights into these. for myself as a product designer/innovator and teacher, these are very valid and meaningful questions, I highly recommend it.

Despite the title it is a must read to understand the shift in management strategy and how is the current "leader" culture (instead of the boss culture) mostly benefit your leaders and not you.

I am struck by the visceral and reactive comments in some of the reviews, but this only demonstrates that Sennett has touched a vulnerable nerve among those who have a vested interest in the juggernaut of globalization and commercial frenzy of the Internet. Isn't it interesting that the most volatile reviews come from those in the heart of Silicon Valley? Sennett has succeeeded in illuminating the universal in the particular, yes, through what his critics denigrates as "just anecdotes"? But anecdotes are grounded in human experience, not rarefied abstractions of traditional positivist sociology. His critics ought to go back to read C. Wright Mills' classic The Sociological Imagination, who takes these posivist parasites to task. Sennett also does a stellar job of stripping away the corporate speak and propaganda about "change, teams, reengineering" --the stuff that has made management gurus and their parrot of consultant-followers rich, while the ordinary Joe is the mere anecdotal recipient of such social engineering schemes. Sennett also succeeds in showing how the superficiality of corporate life is bleeding over to the family, eroding away depth and character..this is a sore spot that most managers would rather ignore. As C. Wright Mills, the great sociologist taught, "the political task of the sociologist...is to translate personal troubles into public issues, and public issues into the terms of their human meaning for a variety of indivdiuals" The public isn't moved by barren statistics, it is moved by real stories of real human beings.

Sennett grapples here with serious and deep problems in modern American culture and economy, but does not really get a grip on them. Given that he sees the problems, but doesn't really offer new thoughts on their causal structures or solutions, too much of the book deteriorates into repetitious whining. Should have been an essay, not stretched into a book.

A very realistic romance I would love to drown myself again. As a reader I am hooked to Sundari Venkatraman’s book. As a writer I am trying to learn at least a few lessons in writing from one of the most prolific romance writer in India.Rohit and Tasha meeting each other at the least romantic places and least romantic of a situation, and before you know they are pulled into the strongest of all tornadoes- Love.

Loved Rohit & Tasha's characters and the chemistry between these two was definitely hot. Both the lead characters were strong. I loved the fact how their relationship started off as friendship then turned into love. Very realistic and believable storyline .The story was fast paced and a total page turner . Looking forward to reading the next story in the series. A must recommendation for romance lovers.

Simha International is a first of the three-part series and has luxury hotels as the backdrop of the novel. A romance series that takes us to the various five-star properties across India. The hero, Rohit is intelligent, self-made, and kind. A well balanced, millennium man who keeps all aspects of work and life quite balanced. He falls for Tasha who is in a situation and Rohit helps her out. She is a hard working girl with no airs but is floored by his kindness and generosity. Their love blossoms and eventually they are working together.I loved the side of Goa that was explored in Simha International so had to add a bit of the beach in the banner! I am eager to read the rest of the series.Tasha is from a family where her family does not really care for her. In this book, Sundari shares the angst of many girls from conservative families who think that the world revolves around their sons. Women who work hard yet are never appreciated for what they do since they are not a boy. Her mother is no different and her brother follows what he sees their mother does.Simha International is the backdrop of a bit of intrigue and cheating. One there is a thief within the premises and an ex-boyfriend tries to join the hotel. Rohit and Tasha face the difficulties together and they have some stellar staff. Slowly the situation is under control and their relationship grows with the challenges they face.I found the story interesting, a bit different with a little thief in the story and a second chance for the lovers. This book is first in the trilogy called The Bansal Legacy and the author introduces us to the parents of Rohit and his siblings. Love of siblings, a family that supports and men that are not just handsome but intelligent and kind make this book a perfect start for the series. A bit of crime, deceit, a healthy dose of love and romance make Simha International a fun read any time.Pick any book by Sundari and enjoy romance with an Indian twist even if it is in an international location 🙂

I love this new series by Sundari Venkatraman (The Bansal Legacy), and I can’t wait for Book 3! I think it’s the mix of exotic settings, hotel goings-on, surprising twists and irresistible protagonists that makes me enjoy these romances so much. They’re quite hot too, which never hurts…While I really enjoyed the interracial couple from “Rose Garden International” (yes, I read Book 2 before Book 1), the hero and heroine from “Simha International” are a real treat, too. Rohit seems smart and caring, with the right amount of ruthless determination to get to the top, and with a tempting mischievous streak. Tasha is full of temperament and intelligence, and although my heart hurt for all the trials and tribulations of her past, I couldn’t help but admire the woman she’s become. These two are a great match and portrayed very vividly and believably.This time, the author managed to surprise me with not just one, but three twists! She kept me on my toes and also enthralled by the hotel coming alive. And what’s more, she made me swoon during the sensual scenes and drool with all the lovely food descriptions.If you enjoy somewhat steamy and slightly suspenseful romance novels set in India, this is going to be a delight for you.

The strength of this book is the low number of errors, compactness of its presentation, pedagogy, collection of exercises, emphasis of fundamentals, and careful calculation. Rarely is the reader left, unaided and unguided, to fill in gaping holes in logic. It is somewhat slow to work through the dense presentation. Also, the book treats some rather advanced topics (e.g., Matsubara sums, Feynman diagrams, etc.) with the same compactness. I had trouble understanding what the book was trying to communicate while taking a course. However, on revisiting the material after I'd finished the course, I realized the presentation was quite clear, and it was just my extremely-stressed state that was causing me to misinterpret the material.I should also say the extremely-ambitious course I took out of this book tried to cover almost the entire book, _and_ I was underqualified to take the course (I was concurrently taking only my first semester of introductory solid state physics). The book does say it is designed for a 2-semester course, not 1! It should be a statement about the book's clarity that the course wasn't a complete disaster for me...indeed, studying under such an ambitious instructor in such an unprepared state could have been a perfect-storm of a disaster!

This is a very good textbook for beginners to learn many body theory. The 2016 edition has corrected a lot of misprints.

A little bit broken ridge

In its third edition it still contains an unacceptable amount of syntactical and grammatical errors, missing words, wrong formulas and nebulous explanations. For example, the 6th chapter explains linear response theory crystal clear, but the accompanying derivations of the conductivity and conductance formulae are erroneous and do not follow the recipe of linear response theory, which is extremely unpedagogical. Moreover, the book lacks rigour: When one wants to rederive some formulae it can happen that one gets stuck because the authors missed to provide proper definitions.In conclusion, the book by Bruus and Flensberg introduces some concepts in a very clear and pedagogical manner. Other than that the book has some serious faults. The reader has to devote more time to clearing up the mathematics than to understand the physics.

This book is exactly what a new student (with some training in basic grad courses in solid state, statistical mechanics, etc.) needs to grasp condensed matter physics without a "research-based bias." Todays programs are so focused on application that a thorough treatment of pedigogical materials get superfically taught. Philip Anderson warns about this in his timeless classic "Basic Notions." This book uses QFT in canonical picture (bootstraps), no mention of path integrals. I started out in HEP, so I got trained fairly well in path integrals, some may find this a barrier with the book. Luttinger theory is the most modern topic touched on, applications to materials science. I recommend Wen's book if you want to look at Quantum Hall Effects and Topological Orders (post 1980's).

I used this book for my master's project on superconductivity. It gave me a solid basis on many-body theory.

This book offers a fairly decent, thorough treatment of solid state theory, while still being somewhat approachable. However, this book is not for the inexperienced. You should expect to spend lots of time looking up things in more introductory books.
